BOTTLE-LABELING- MACHINE.
Application filed December 18, 1920. Serial No. 431,531.
To all coil-m it may concern. 1 1
Be it known that I, EDWARD ERMOLD,.8.
citizen f the United States of America, and
a resident of New York, in the county oil New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Labeling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in machines forapplying labels t bottles and the objects of the invention are to provide new and improved body label and neck label presser fingers and the objects of the invention are to improve said presser fingers and to make the same adjustable so that the same can easily be adjusted and arranged to conform to various shapes and sizes of bottles.
The present invention is particularly adapted for use with the machine shown in my Patent No. 1,308,280 patented July 1, 1919.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side view partly in section of neck label and body label presser fingers made in accordance with the invention, showing the same in position with a bottle to be labeled. a
Figure 2 is a perspective view ofthe neck label presser finger shown in Figure 1.
In the drawings 1 designates a presserrod to the lower end of which is secured a body label presser-finger comprising a finger bar 2 which is pivotally mounted midway of its length to the sides of a channel bar 3 by means of a pivot pin 4:. The channel bar 3 is, in the present instance, secured to the ends of upper and lower guide rods 5 slidably mounted in the lower end of the resser-rod 1 suitable means such as cotter pins 6 being secured to the ends of the guide rods 5 to prevent the same slipping out. The channel bar 3 is, inv the present instance, also secured to the ends of upper and lower spring holding rods 7 slidably mounted in the lower end of the presser rod 1. preferably adjacent upper and lower guide rods 5. The spring holding rods 7 are arranged to support suitable coiled springs 8, the outer ends of which are arranged to engage the channel bar 3, whereas the inner ends are arranged to engage the bottom of suitable recesses surrounding the spring holding rods 7 which are made sufliciently deep to permit of the springs being enclosed therein when the finger bar 2 is forced rearwardly.
In the present instance the body label presser finger is shown with the finger bar 2 i as it first engages a body label 9 on a bottle 10, pressure being applied to the presser rod to apply tension to the springs 8 to prevent the label being displaced when engaged by suitable wiping means not shown. The finger bar 2 is pivoted as before described t permit/it to conform to the shape of the bottle and the guide rods and springs act to keep the finger bar 2 from being displaced when pressure is applied to securely hold the body label in place. p
i The upper end of the presser-bar is provided with an adjustable neck label presserfinger comprising a curved bar 11 which is pivotally mounted at its upper end to the upper end of an arm 12 by means of a pivot pin 18. The arm 12 forms part of an irregularly shaped bracket 14: which is arranged to slidably engage the upper end of thepresser-bar to which, it is secured in any desired position by means of a suitable set screw 15. The curved bar 11 is suitably offset midway of its length and arranged to engage the forked end of a spring rod 16 to which it is pivotally connected by means of a pivot pin 17. The other end of the spring rod 16 is slidably mounted in a rearwardly extending portion 18 of the arm 12, the rear end of the spring rod 16 being threaded and arranged to adjustably engage a split lock nut 19, the position of which can be adjusted to vary the tension of a coiled'spring 20 mounted on the spring rod 16, which acts to force the lower, end of the curved bar 11 outward.
In the present instance the neck label presser finger is shown with the lower rounded end of the curved bar 11 as it first engages a neck label 21 on the bottle 10, pressure being applied to the resser-rod to apply tension to the spring 20 to prevent the label being displaced when engaged by suitable wiping means not shown. The curved bar 11 is pivoted at its upper end rearwardly of its label engaging end to permit it to conform. to the shape of the bottle when pressure is applied to securely hold the neck label in place.
In the present instance suitable guide members 22 secured to the bracket 14 are provided for keeping the lower end of the curved bar 11 in alignment.
When it is desired to place neck labels on shorter or longer bottles or at different positions on the neck of the bottle it is only necessary to a move A the sneck label pressei finger up or down along thexpresserbar by adjusting the set screw 15.
When neck label and body label, presser fingers are used similar to' those shown in my patent above referred to, iti-is necessary above described permit of the neck label finger being readily adjusted to fit different sizebottles and the body label finger will readily adjust itself to "conform "to any small-irregularity in theshape ot'the hoti tle:
WVhile the invention has beenwdescribed with particular reference to the details of construction the same is not to be consid ered as limited thereto as many changes can be made and'still fall Within the scope of the inventionset forth'gin the -i:'ollo'wing claims. i I
What I claim is: 1 I. Arbottlelabeling'machinepresser rod comprising .in combination a -finger bar, a plurality of rods slidably mountedon said presser rod, means for pivotally c'onn'ecting said finger bar to -'said 'rods', and spring acting 1neans secured to isaid ,rods for as l in tension tozsaid fin er bar as b t) I and for the purposes set forth.
2. A bottle labeling machine presser rod comprising in combination a neck label presser-finger comprising a curved bar, a bracket slidably mounted on said presser rod," means ifor-pivotally mounting one end of said curved bar on said bracket, and spring acting means connecting said curved banwith said bracket for applying tension to said curved" bar as and for the purposes set forth; a 3. Aibottlel labeling machine presser rod comprising sin i combination a 1 body "label presserrfinger comprising a -finger bar, a plurality of rods slidably mounted on'sa-id presser -rod,-means for 'pivotally connecting said l'lllgel bar-*toflsaid -rods ,spring acting means secured to said rods for-applying tension to said finger bar, a neck label presser finger comprising :a curved bar, a,
bracket slidably" mounted on said presser bar, means for pivota-lly inounting'one end of said curved baron; said ;bracket-, and spring i acting means connecting said curved bar With said bracket for: applying tension to said curved bar as and for; the purposes set forth. a V I In testimony whereof I have signed-"this specification in the presemse of tWo subscribingnwitnesses. g
