, ORION'ESMOND JOHNSON, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
MITER BOX.
Application filed ne a, 1922. Serial No. 526,945.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, ORION EsMoND J 011N- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaterloo, in the county of Black Hawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miter Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in miter boxes, the object being to provide a miter box with saw guides which are capableof swinging in vertical'and horizontal planes'in order to allow the box to be used for cutting the material for forming various kinds of joints and angles. i 7
Another and further object of the invention is to provide novel means for locking the saw guides in adjusted position. i
' A still further object of the invention isto provide a miter box which is exceedingly simple and cheap in construction, the parts being so arranged and connected together that a very strong and durable box is formed, the saw guides being so mounted that they will be rigidly locked in adjusted position so that a true out can be made.
Other and furtherobjects and advantages of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims. I
In the drawings,
Figure 1 is a top plan view;
Figure 2 is a front elevation, partly in section;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Figure l.
In the embodiment of my invention as herein shown 1 indicates a bed plate mounted on legs with a reduced central portion cut to form a substantially tri-angular guide way and to provide a segmental rack 2 for the purpose hereinafter fully described.
Secured to the bed plate are back plates 3, the inner edges of which are cut off obliquely and terminate at the inner edge of the triangular guide way as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 4t.
Pivotally mounted on the bed plate centrally of the same at the rear edge within the reduced portion is a lever 4 herein shown mounted on a bolt 5, said lever having reduced ends 6 forming pivots for tubular saw guides 7 which are connected together by a grooved bar 8 as clearly shown in Figure 3. The saw guides are secured in position on the plvots 6 by swedging the ends thereon as clearly shown and it will be seen that by this construction the lever 4- is capable of swingng in a horizontal plane and the saw guides in a vertical plane and as the guides are connected together by the bar 8, they are held in true alignment. The tubular guides are slotted to form guide ways for the saw.
Secured on the lever 4 within the cut away portion of the bed is a block 9 carrying a grooved strip 10 which is arranged in such a manner that it can be removed and a new block inserted when the same has been cut up by the saw when the box is in use, this strip protecting the bottom of the box and whlle I have shown it secured in position in this particular manner, it is, of course, understood that it can be secured in various ways. The pivot 5 also secures this block in position and in use the securing bolts are preferably countersunk.
The underside of the lever is grooved as shown at 11 and secured within the groove is an arm 12 carrying a detent 13 which extends through a slot formed in the top of the lever and is adapted to engage the rack 2 so as to hold the lever in its adjusted position. The arm 12 with the detent is held into engagement with the rack by a spring 14 mounted on a push pin 15 which extends through an opening in the lever and has its lower end connected to the arm 12 as shown in Figure 3 so that when it is desired to shift the lever with the saw guides, the push pin is forced downwardly which moves the detent out of engagement with the rack in order to allow the lever to be swung in a horizontal plane.
When the push pin is released, the detent is raised upwardly so as to seat itself between the teeth of the rack in order to lock it securely. The forward endof the lever carries a rack 16 adapted to be engaged by a spring detent 17 carried by the front saw guide. The spring detent as herein shown comprises a shank portion 18 having a head at its outer end, the shank being secured by a coil spring 19 so that the detent is normally held into engagement with the rack and when it is desired to shift the guides into different vertical planes, the shank is pushed inwardly so as to disengage the detent from the rack and the saw guides are free to swing on the pivot 6 so that When the detent is released, the guides will be locked in their adjusted position.
Yl hllG I have shown certain details of construction, I am aware that these can be changed wlthout departing troln my lnvention and therefore I donot wish to limit myself to the exact construction as herein shown as'my invent on consists in providing a miter hm: with a pivoted lever-on the ends of which are pivotally mounted saw guides;
hat I claim is:- v
1, In a miter box,'the combination with a bed plate, or" a lever pivotally mounted on the underside of said plate having pivots at its end, saw guides pivotally mounted on said pivots connected together by a bar and adjusted position upon said pivots.
'3. A- miter box coniprising a bed plate havinga cutout portion to provide a seg mental rack, a lever pivotally mounted on the under side of said bed, plate having a spring detent'adapted to engage said rack, said lever being provided with reduced ends forming pivots, saw guides pivotally mounted upon said pivots, a bar connecting said saw guides, a rack carried-by said lever and a detent carried by one of said saw guides adapted to engage said rack.
at; A miter box comprising a bed plate having a pivoted lever provided with re-.
thereof, a rack formed on said bed plate, an
arm mounted in thegroove or said lever carrying a detent adapted to engage said rack, a push pin mounted on said lever con: neeted to said arm, a spring surroundin'g' said push pin for holding said detentin en gagement with said rack and means for lo kingsaid pivotally mounted saw guides on said lever in adjusted position.
5. A miter box comprising a bed plate mounted onlegs having a cut outportion to produce asegmental rack,a lever mounted on the underside of said bed plate having a block working in, said out out portion, an interchangeable strip carried by said block working in said guide way, said lever having reduced ends to form pivots, tubular 'saW guides mounted upon the ends of said lever, a detent carried by said lever for engaging said rack, a rack formedonone end-of said lever and a spring detent carried by one of said saw guides adapted to engage said rack for locking said saw guides in adjusted position.
