Be it known that we, BERTRAM C. CAXDEE and TVILLIAM X. PIERCE, citizens of the iinited States, residing at Butl'alo. in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a fuse and has for its object the provision of simple and etlicient means for ventilating the casing which encloses 'the fuse link, so that when the latter blows the gases can escape from the casing without permitting the passage oi any flame to the exterior of the fuse.

The enclosing casing of the fuse comprises inner and outer tubular body sections 10, ll of insulating material which are movable lengthwise relatively to each other for the purpose of covering and uncovering an opening 12 in the side of the inner section through which the fuse link 1st is introduced into the casing and the remnants of the same are removed when burnt out.
'ithin opposite ends of the inner bodysection are arranged metal cup-shaped bushings which have their flanges 15 engaging the bore of the body section and their heads 16 arranged inwardly. so that the concave sides of these bushings face outwardly. A metal cup-shaped ballie is arranged within the outer end of each bushing, the flange 17 of this ballle engaging with the bore of the bushing flange and "its head 18 being arranged inwardly so that the concave side of the oafile faces outwardly. At one end of the inner body section is arranged a small metal disk 19 which has its edge facing the bore ot the outer body section and at the other end of the inner body section is arran ed a large metal disk 21) which extends wit. its margin across the corresponding end the outer body section.

21 represents a metal cap which fits over one end of the outer body section and is s ecured thereto by punch pricks 24 and nor mally. bears with its head against the outer side of the small disk. 22 represents a similar metal cap fitting loosely over the other end of the outer body section and seem d to' the edge of the large disk by pun pricks 23.
25, 26 represent two flat metal terminals of the knife blade type each of which e2;- tends lengthwise through the head of one bushing, the head of the companion bafile and the adjacent disk and cap. The inner ends of these terminals are adapted to be connected within the casing by the fuse link which is detachably connected therewith by bolts 27 or other appropriate means, while the outer ends thereof form contacts for engagement with the contacts of a suitable fuse block.
The gases resulting from a blowing fuse escape from the casing through vent openings 28 in the heads of the bushings, vent openings 29 in the heads of the bafiles, vent openings 30 in the disks and vent openings 31 in the heads of the caps. Any flame .re sulting from the blowing of the fuse-is however prevented from passing out of the casing to the exterior thereof by means of one or more screens 32 arranged within each bushing next to the outer side of its head, one or more screens 33 arranged within each battle next to the outer side of its head and a filling 34 of non-combustible wool arranged in each bushing between the screens therein and the inner side of the head of the companion battle. The screens are prefer ably constructed of woven wire gauze and the filling preferably consists of steel wool. n

35 represents two coupling pins each of which passes transversely through one end of the inner body section. through the conipanion bushing between the head of the shown in Fig. 2. The cap 21 is however detachably interlocked with the terminal 25 by providing the head of this cap with lips 37 on opposite sides of its center which may be engaged with inwardly-facing shoulders 38 on the terminal 25, as shown in Figs. 2 and upon turning this cap in one direction and disengaged therefrom upon turning this cap in the opposite direction. When the cap 21 and terminal 25 are interlocked, the outer casing section is held in its closed position, so as to cover the fuse inlet opening in the inner casing section and when this cap and terminal are unlocked from each other the outer casing section may he slid 0d the inner casing section to uncover the inlet. opening in the latter and permit of renewing the fuse.
As av whole, this fuse is very substantial in construction and not liable to be shattered under the severest use to which the same may be subjected, thereby permitting the same to be used indefinitely with new fuse links. Furthermore, all danger from fire is practically eliminated while retaining the advantage of being easily refillable with new fuses and no likelihood of parts getting out of order.
\Ve claim as our invention:
1, A. fuse comprising a casing having inner and outer tubular body sections of ininner and outer tubular body sections of in" sulating material, said inner section being provided with a side opening. a comparatively long metal cup-shaped bushing arranged in each end of the inner body section and having its concave side facing outwardly, a metal cup-shaped battle arranged in the outer end of each bushing and having its concave side facing outwardly, a screen arranged within each bushing next to its head, a screen arranged within each battle,
metal terminals extending through the head of each bushing and the head of the companion battle, the heads of said bushings and ba-tties being provided with rent openings, and steel wool arranged in the bushings between the screens therein and the heads of the respective baffles.
