Application lerl June, 1922.
To a/Z whom. z'z may concern:
Be it known that l, FRANK E. lWoLcorn a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in lValie Irons, of which the following is a specification.
rlhis invention relates to the construction of those waflie irons which are designed to be electrically heated.
These utensils generally consist of a base member mounted on legs and a cover member hinged to the base, the base being adapted to receive a heating unit and provided on its upper face with a grid, and the cover being adapted to receive a heating unit and provided on its under face with a grid that cooperates with the base grid to holdy and shape the batter to be baked.
rlhe object of the present invention is to provide a waiile iron having a minimum number of legs disposed in such way that the device will stand firmly whether the cover is opened or closed, and further to so form the grids that a pair of wafiies of normal size and shape may be baked but they will be so scored that they may be readily divided into half portions if desired, thereby providing at low cost a stable, convenient and eliicient structure.
This object is attained by extending the bottom of the base member of the waiiie iron to the rear so as to form a shel= upon which the cover member will rest when opened and turned way over to the bach, and providing this shelf extension at the rear with a singie leg. that with two legs under the front of the base member gives an extended support forthe device, and farther by connecting certain of the grid hubs by webs so located that they will crease the Waies across the middle without completely separating them on this line, enabling them when desired, to be readily broken apart where thinned by the creases.
Figure l of the accompanying drawings shows a plan with the cover closed, of a waffle iron which embodies this invention. Fig. 2 shows a plan of the same with the cover open. Fig. 3 shows a front elevation with the cover closed. F ig. 4 shows a side elevation with the cover closed. F ig. 5 is a view looking at the same end with the cover opened. Fig, 6, on larger scale, shows a vertical section of a part of the base and cover grids, on the plane indicated by 6-6 Serial No. 565,526.
on FigQ. Fig. is a vertical section of the grids on the plane indicated by T T on Fig. 2
These devices may be made of any suitable metal. rl`he base is rectangular in outline and comprises a grid section l with recesses Q in its upper face and hubs 3 extending into the recesses. Attached to the under side of the base grid section is a plate 4 which conforms in outline to the front and sides of the grid section but at the rear extends some distance beyond the back of the grid section and forms a triangular shelf rl`he bottom plate at the front has two legs 6 and at the rear or apex of the shelf has a single leg 7. Between the base grid and the bottom plate is a space 8 in which a heating unit of any desired type and capacity may be inserted.
rlhe cover consists of a grid section 9 that conforms in outline to the base grid section and is provided on its under face with recesses l0 into which extend the hubs ll. Attached to the top of the cover grid section is a plate 1:2 between which and the grid .is a space 13 for receiving a heating' unit of the desired type and capacity. At
the back the cover has ears ll that are piv oted to ears l5 on the base so that when the cover is closed it will conform to and set closely against the base but when the cover is opened it will turn over and rest on the shelrp at the back. rihe device has only three legs but these legs are so widely disposed that when the cover, which normally has considerable weight, is opened and turned over to the back and rest on the shelf, the device will not be over-balanced but will be firmly supported.
The grids shown are designed to form a pair of waffles, being separated at the middle by partitions 16 which divide the wailies. For the. purpose of providing means whereby half portions can be readily obtained the center row of hubs are connected by webs 17 which webs are substantially the height as the hubs. As these webs do not come together when the cover is closed on the base they do not completely separate the waii'les but merely crease or score them on this line. This while not separating the waiiies into half portions thins them in such a manner that if desired they may be readily broken apart along the scored line so as to divide them into half portions.
The invention claimed is l. A. Waffle iron comprising a base and a same cover hinged thereto, the base and the cover being provided with shaping grids and having means v for the application of heating imits, said base having a, part extending to the rear and providing a shelf on Which the cover will rest when it is opened fromthe base, said shelf extension being provided with lsupporting leg.
2. A waffle iron comprising va hase having a grid, a pair of legs at the front, an eX- tension to the rear and a supporting leg heneath the'xtension, and a cover provided with a grid, said cover being hinged to the hase in Such manner that when opened therefrom it will rest -upon the rearward extension of the base.
