Description
B. AN YAN. Combined Picture-Frames and Exhibitors.
Patented Nov. 18,1873.
No.144Q648.
. momma UNITED STATES BENJAMIN ANYAN, OF FITCHVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED PICTURE FRAMES AND EXHIBITERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,648, dated November 18,1873; application filed October 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN ANYAN, of Fitchville, in the county of Huron and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Picture-Frame, of which the following is a specification 1n the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved pictureframe; Fig. 2, a vertical central section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1 and Fig. 3, a detail view of the picture-strips, showing method of mounting and binding the pictures at the edges.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention is to construct a picture-frame in such a manner that a series of pictures may be combined and exhibited consecutively therein, to be used as a cheap and convenient method of framing lithographs, photographs, &c., which combines the advantages of a picture-frame with a photographalbum or other collection. My invention consists in providing the back of the frame with brackets, between which rollers are supported, on which the pictures, mounted and stitched in the shape of a long strip, are rolled up and carried by suitable guide-rollers along the glass of the frame for exhibition, by turning the cranks of the picture-rollers.
In the drawing, A represents the frame, which may be made of any size, finish, or ornamentation. Parallel brackets B B are applied to the corners of frame A, and support the main rollers O 0. Any number of pietures, photographs, &'c., are mounted on muslin, bound and stitched at their edges, to give them sufficient strength; or the binding alone may be used and the joints of the pictures stitched or connected by canvas, ribbon, or otherwise. This connected strip or series D is then applied with the ends to the rollers G G, and rolled tightly thereon by turning their cranks G C, which project at one side beyond the bracket, or are made detachable, so
as to be taken off and inserted when required. The strip D is preferably of the same width as the distance between the brackets, so that they guide the strip in its passage; or narrower strips and suitable guide pins or lugs a may be employed. The guide-rollers E press the picture'strip on the glass part of the picture, so that an even, unwrinkled surface is visible through the same. The pictures pass along the glass by turning one roller until all are collected upon it, and so vice versa, exhibiting the pictures one after theother in both directions, till all have passed before the eye. A suitable covering, F, of muslin or other material, is stretched along the brackets over the rollers, to prevent the dust from settling in the inside.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent As a new article of manufacture, a combined picture frame and exhibiter, for the exhibition of a series of pictures, consisting of the combination of frame A, brackets B B, picture-rollers G O, guide-rollers E, and strip D, on which a series of pictures is mounted, all arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
BENJAMIN ANYAN.
