Description
H."L. PEIBCE. Processes of Repairing Spinning-Rings. N0. 144,630. 3 Patented Nov-18,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE HORATIO L. PEIRGE, OF TAUNTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE PROCESSES OF REPAIRING SPINNING-RINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,630, dated November 18, 1873; application filed October 15, 1673.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HORATIO L. PnIncE, of Taunton, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Process of Repairing Spinning-Rings; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which 'form part of this-specification.
, H S 116W.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
After the flange a has become worn and rough by the constant wear of the traveler, and is condemned as unfit for use, I take the ring and anneal it until it is very soft and tough. It is then placed upon a suitablyshaped stake, which bears up against the under side of the flange, and, by means of blows from a hammer, or by pressure, the flange is widened or drawn out until suflicient stock is obtained to form, practically, a new flange.
By means of the blows or pressure the particles of the metal are condensed so as to equalize all unevenness, and to form a closer, harder grain, which will stand the constant wear of the traveler much better than in the first instance.
The flange is always made thicker than there is any necessity for, and by this process of repairing it I simply make use of this surplus material, at a trifling expense, to make the ring as perfect as new. After the flange has been widened and smoothed 01f, the entire ring is case-hardened and polished, as in the first instance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim The method described of repairing spinningrings, by annealing them until soft, and then widening out the flange by means of-blows or pressure, so as to form a perfect flange, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claiin'the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of October, 1873.
HORATIO L. PEIRGE. [L. s.[ Witnesses:
ANDREW S. BRIG-GS, SAMUEL W. REED.
