ALEXANDER C. REID, 0F GENOA, ILLINOIS.
VIBRATORY CUTTER.
Application filed January 19, 1922. Serial No. 530,321.
To all 'whom t may concern.' l
Be it known that I, ALEXANDEI; C. REID, acitizen of the United States, residing at Genoa, in the county of De Kalb and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Vibratory Cutters, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
y invention relates to vibratory cutters and more particularly to. a vibratory cutter which is provided with a blade that vibrates for cutting purposes, the movement of the blade in one direction being obtained by means of an electromagnet and the movement in the opposite direction being obtained by means of a spring.
It is a purpose of the invention to provide a device of the above mentioned character which is operated by alternating current. In such a device it is important tohave the spring of just the proper flexibility, for if the spring is too stiff the moving system comprising the blade and spring will be so timed as to vibrate at a higher frequency than desired, while if the spring is too flexible 'or weak, the moving Vsystem will be tuned to a lower frequency than desired. Ordinarily a device would be operated on a @0 cycle current, and it is desired to tune the moving system to the same frequency by properly tuning the moving parts so as to obtain the desired frequency. The maximum of power can be obtained from the electromagnetic operating means by so adjusting the frequency..
It is particularly a purpose of the invention to provide a spring in a device of the above mentioned character which is made of a greater stiffness than is necessary, and is weakened by grinding away a portion thereof, or in any other way removing a portion thereof so as to obtain the desired flexibility, thus making it possible to obtain a very close adjustment of the flexibility of the spring.
Other objects and advantagesof the in vention will appear as the description of' the accompanying drawings proceeds. However, I desire to have it distinctly understood that I do not intend to limit myself to the exact details shown or described, but that I intend to include as part of my invention all such obvious changes and modifications of parts as wouldpccur to a person skilled in this art. In the drawings is shown a vibratory hair clipper having a'toothed v movable blade and a toothed stationarv blade, but it is to be understood that the iiivention is not to be limited to the exact form o f blade used. The principle of the invention may be applied to any moving or sliding cutting blade which is actuated in one direction "by a direction by the spring forming a part of the present invention. v
In the drawingsm:
F ig. 1 is a fragmentary plan View of a clipper with the cover thereof removed showing my improved spring device in position therein;
Fig. 2 is a section thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
1g. 3 a perspective view of a flat spring which may be used; and 1g. 4 is a similar view of a spring that is substantially square in lcross section.
.Referring in detail to the drawings, in Fig. 1 is shown a lcasing 5 within which is mounted an electromagnet comprising the solenoids 6 and having the pole pieces 7 with which the armature 8, which is pivotally mounted relative to is adapted to cooperate. Secured rigidly to the armature 8 is the driving arm 10 which has pivotally mounted on the end thereof the movable block 18 carrying the blade 11 which cooperates-with the blade 12, which 1s iixedly mounted on the casing. 5. The blades 11 and 12 are provided with cooperating teeth 13' and 14 if desired. A bracing member 15 is pivotally connected with the armature 8 at one end' thereof by means of the pivot member 16 and to the block 18 at the other end thereof by means of the pivot 17.. The blade 11 is mounted on a block 18, which block has one end of the springl9 se! cured thereto, the other end of the spring 19 being 'secured to the casing 5 at 20. The spring 19 is secured to the block 18 by means of the link 25 having the pivot pin 23 eX- tending through a suitable openingy in the block and to the spring 21 by means of the lugs 24 passing through openings in the spring. The spring 19 must be of such flexibility as to provide for the proper period of vibration ofthe bladel 11, so that the frequency of the vibration will not be interfered with by the spring member 19. In order to obtain the desired frequency for the member 19, the same is preferably ground away as at 21 to provide a weakened portion magnet and in the opposite the casing at 9,
noids 6. The spring 19 is shown in Figs.v
l to 3 inclusive -as being a Hat spring, while in Figg 4 is shown a different form of spring, said spring being designated 19 and being provided with a cutaway portion 21.
The spring shownin Fig. 4 is made of substantially the same thickness as the width thereof. It will, of course, be understood that a spring of any desired lcross-section can be used, the important feature being to provide a spring having a cutaway portion -for tuning ythe same in a device having a,
vibratory cutting blade which moves or slides relative to the stationary parts of the device. It will also be evident that it is not necessary that the spring be perfectly straight as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, but the same may be of any desired .form lengthwise thereof so' long, -as the same is not a spiral spring. The blade 11 is pressed toward the blade 12 by the spring member 22, as will be evident from Figs. 1 and 2.v
Having thus described my invention', what I desire to claim and secure by U. Letters Patent is:
1. A devicev ofthe character described comprising a supporting member, a cutting l blade movably mounted thereon, electromag netic means for moving said blade in one 'f direction, and spring means for moving said blade in the opposite direction, said sprmg means having a weakened portion.
2. A device of the character described comprising a supporting member, a cutting blade movably mounted thereon, and means for vibrating said cutting blade comprising a driving link and electromagnetic means for moving said link and blade in one direction energized from a source of'alternating current and spring means extending parallel to said link'for moving said blade in the opposite direction, said spring means havinga weakened portion to tune the moving parts of said device tothe frequency of said source of current.
- 3. -A device of the character described comprising a supporting member, a-cutting being f blade movably mounted thereon, and means for moving said blade comprising an electromagnet, an. armaturepivotally mounted on said support on a rigid pivot cooperating with said magnet, means connecting said blade with said armature and a spring, said electromagnet moving said blade in one direction and said spring moving' the same in the opposite direction, said spring having a weakened portion and said connecting means and said spring cooperating to guide said blade in its movement.
4. A device of the' character described comprising a supporting member, a cutting blade movably mounted thereon, and means for moving said blade comprising an electromagnet, a source of alternating current connected therewith, an armature pivotally mounted on said support ona rigid pivot cooperating with said magnet, means con# vnecting said blade with said armature and a spring connected with said blade, said electromagnet moving said blade in one direction and said spring moving the same in the opposite direction, said spring having a portion of reduced cross section, whereby the iexibility of said spring may be in creased to tune the vibrations of the moving parts of said device to the frequency of said source of current.
5. A device of the character described comprising a supporting member, a cutting blade movably mounted thereon, and driving means for said blade comprising electromagnetic means for moving said blade in one direction, and spring means for mov,- ing said blade in the opposite direction, said spring means having 4a weakened portion between the ends thereof. l
6. A device of the character described comprising a supporting member, a cutting blade movably mounted thereon, and means for moving said blade comprising an elec-4 tromagnet, an armature pivotally mounted on said support on a rigid pivot cooperating with said magnet, means connecting said .blade with said armature and a spring, said electromagnet moving said blade. in one direction. and said spring moving thev same in the opposite direction, said spring having a weakened portion between the ends thereof.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 4th day of 1922.
