citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new'a'nd useful Improvements in Detachable Teeth for Handsaws; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to detachable teeth for hand-saws such as are used by carpenters and the like, and it has for its principal object to provide a toothed strip for connection to the lower edge of a flexible blade simulating that found on hand-saws at this time.
The principal feature of the invention is that the manner in which the toothed member is connected with the blade does not limit or interfere with the depth of the cut as do other saws embodying removable teeth.-
A further aim of the invention is to provide a hand-saw of this class which embodies all of the advantages of the ordinary hand-saw such as used by a carpenter and has the additional advantages of enabling the teeth when worn and displaced, to be removed and a new set of teeth substituted therefor.
A still further-aim of the invention is to provide a saw having removable teeth which are connected with the blade by means of self-gripping resilient jaws. Hence, the employment of special clamping devices for holding the teeth in place is entirely overcome and the tooth-strip can be easily and readily removed from the blade by hand.
Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.

Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates a flexible blade of the same shape as blades now found on carpenters handsaws. This blade is provided on its lower edge with integral resilient jaws 2 which provide between themselves a channel in which the upper edge of a flexible strip 3 is received. It is to be pointed out here that the jaws 2 are sufliciently resilient to render themselves self-gripping so that after the strip 3 is inserted between them, they will automatically frictionally grip it and hold it in place. The strip 3 referred to is provided on its lower edge with alternately bent teeth 4 which are properly set previous to the attachment of the strip 3 tothe aforesaid blade. In order to prevent longitudinal shifting of the strip 3,v the blade is which may be integral therewith or otherwise rigidly secured thereto, these being ranged at the opposite ends of the channel and the adjacent ends of the strip 3 being engaged therewith. I may state that in many forms of saws with which I am familiar, the constructions are such that the detachable teeth are not directly connected to a flexible blade but some sort of a holder is provided However, this i's not the case with the construction and arrangement that I employ.
The manner of attaching and detaching the stripwhich carries the teeth is obvious from the drawings and it is therefore thought unnecessary to go into more detail. Since probably the best results may be obtained with the'construction and arrangement herein shown and described, this is taken as a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, I wish it to be understood that minor changes coming within the scope of the subjoined claim may be resorted to if desired.
I claim:
A hand-saw comprising a flexible blade and a flexible toothed strip, one of which is formed along one edge with a groove ter1ninating short of the ends of this part to provide shoulders, the side portions of said groove being resilient to provide jaws, the other part being received in said groove and gripped tightly and held in operative place by said jaws, said last named part abutting the aforesaid shoulders to prevent relative sliding movement of said parts.
