The segments i are desirably beveled olf or tapered at the ends ot the inner sur-tace of the throat, as shown at 8, to facilitate the passage of the throat over the bottle head and cap. It will. be seen that even when thebottle head and cap are ol' abnormally large size, the segments l are `moved outwardlyv automatically during the capping operation against a predetermined "pressure, the rings4 and 5 beingtorced ton wards each other by the wedging action ot the coacting surfaces of segments l and rings 4 and 5 against the pressure ot spring 6, It vwill also be seen that when the bottle head is otlcenter oreccentric, the segments on one side are movable outwardly independentlyV of the segments on the opposite side .of the device. ldlhile the' segments yield as required, a predetermined pressure is maintained .upon the skirts ofv the bottle caps through the resistance to the yielding ofthe segments. As soon as the capping operation is complete, the spring 6 andthe rings4 and 5 force the segments l'baelr to their original innermost position by the separationof the rings 4 and 5 and the wedge action of thesaid rings on the segments l.
The term of the invention shown in Figs. Gand 7 is provided with segments l and rings 4 and 5 formed and coacting with each other the sam'e as the corresponding parts in Figs-4 and 5. Instead, however, of employing` springs to 'resist the movement et the rings 4 and 5 towards each other.I there is provided a ring' l0 of plastic resilient materiahsuch as rubber... This ring engages `the'opposite `faces of the rings 4 and 5 and the peripheral central portion of the throat forming ring. Casing l1 surrounds the rings 4, 5 and 10. `Tliis casing is similar to casing 7 of'Figs. 4 and 5 except that it is provided with openings or perforations 12 into which the material of the ring l0 is adapted, to be forced by a movement of the rings 4 and 5 towards each other. The amount of pressure exerted by the ring' l0 on the rings 4 and 5 can be varied by variations in ,size'and number ofthe openings or perforations l2. y
While I have shown two forms of my invention, it is to be understood that many changes may be made in the forms ol' invention shown without departing l'rom the spirit ot the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent oi the United States is:
l. A closure sealing device comprisinga throat 'forming ring having a plurality of segments movable relatively to each other to permit enlargement of the ring, and means yieldingly resisting Asuch movement comprising' a member movable on said segments lo contract the ring, and means tending continuously to so move said member.
2. A sealing head provided with ay closure sealing` device comprising a throat termine` ring adaoted to receives bottle with a cap thereon and having a plurality oil segments movable relatively to each other to permit enlargement oi the ring by the cap, and means yieldingly resisting such movement comprising` a member movable on said seg;- ments to contract the ring, and means earried by the head and tending to move said member in said direction while the bottle with the cap thereon is in the throat forming ring.
3. A sealing` head provided with a closure sealing device comprising` a throat formingr ring adapted to receive a bottle with a cap thereon and having a plurality ot segments movable relatively to each other to permit enlargement of the ring by the cap, and means yieldingly resisting such movement comprisingr a member movable relatively to said segments, said member and segments having coacting surfaces inclined to the direction of relative movement between them whereby said member is adapted upon the movement thereof in a given direction to contract the ring', and means carried by the head and tending to move said member in said direction while the bottle with the cap thereon is in the throat forming' ring.
4. A closure sealing device comprisingr a throat forming ring having a plurality oil segments movable relatively to each other to permit enlargement ot the ring` and means yieldingly resisting such movement comprising a second ring movable along said segments to contract the throat 'lorming ring, and means tendingr continuously to so move said second ring.
5. A sealing head provided with a closure sealing device comprising a throat forming ring adapted to receive a bottle with a cap thereon and having a plurality of segments movable relatively to each other to permit enlargement of the ring by the cap, and means vieldingly resisting such movement comprising a second ring movable relatively to said segments, said member and segments having coacting surfaces inclined to the direction of relative movement between them whereby said second ring is adapted upon the movement thereof in a given direction to contract the throat 'forming ring, and means carried bythe head and tending` to move said second ring in" said direction while the bottle with the cap there- `on is in the throat forming ring.
