NUTCRACKEB.
Application filed April 8,
cracking device in which a toggle lever system is employed for moving a movable jaw toward a stationary jaw in a firm and positive manner to effectively crack nuts between the jaws.
A further object is to produce a nut cracking device in which a support is integrally 'iormedwith a jaw, a second jaw cooperating with the first mentioned jaw, a lever being pivotally connected to the support and a link connection being provided between the lever and the movable jaw whereby the swinging of the lever will forcibly move the last mentioned jaw toward the first mentioned jaw to crack a nut between the jaws,
and also whereby the last mentioned jaw will be quickly brought away from the first mentioned jaw to release the cracked nut from between the jaws.
A still further object is to produce a nut cracking device that includes a fixed jaw and a movable jaw which is adjustable with respect to the fixed jaw, and means for 1noving the last mentioned jaw toward or away from the first mentioned jaw.
The foregoing, and other objects which will present themselves as the nature of the invention is better understood, may be accomplished by a construction, combination and operative association of parts, such as is disclosed by the drawings which accompany and which form part of this specification.
In the drawings Figure 1. is a side elevation of the in vention.
Figure 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary view of a construction substantially similar to Figure 1 but illustrating the movable aw thereof in the nature of an adjustable member.
Referring now to the drawings in detail,
1922. Serial No. 550,717.
the body member or casting 19 is provided with a downwardly extending portion 20 terminating in an outwardly directed flange 21, the said flange having a threaded opening therethrou h through which is screwed a bolt The bolt has its outer end provided with an enlargement in the nature of a hand grip and its opposite end has swiveled thereon a head 23. The body 19 may thus readily be secured upon a support. The end of the body 19 above the flange 21 is integrally formed with an upstanding jaw 24:, the inner or active face of the said aw having a concavity for the reception of a nut. The body 19, at its forward end is disposed at an upward angle, the front end thereof being bifurcated and received inthe bifurcation there is a handle 25 pivoted to the support, as at 26.
Straddling the body and the depending portion 20 thereof. there are the arms 27 on the lower end oi? the movable jaw 28. The arn'is 27 are pivoted to the portion 20 of the body, as at 99. The active face of the jaw is eoncaved. the concavity being disposed opposite the concaved active face of the jaw The jaw 28 has its opposite face provided with an outstanding ear to which is pivoted a link 31, the said link being also pivoted to the end of the handle 25. The operation of this device will, it thought, be perfectly apparent.
In Figure 3 of the drawings, the construction is similar to that reterred to in connection with Figures 1 and 2, the only difference being that the swinging mem ber 28 has adjust-ably arranged thereon a supplemental jaw 82.
It is thought that the foregoing description when taken in connection with the drawings will render the construction and operation of the improvement obvious to those skilled in the art to which such inventions relate, but it is thought necessary to add that I do not wish to confine myself to the details of construction herein set forth and that I am entitled to all such changes therefrom fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, l. claim A device of the character described comprising a body, a portion depending therefrom. arms designed to straddle said body and being pivotally secured adjacent the lower end of the depending portion, said body having one end disposed at an up ward inclination and being terminally bifurcated, a jaw rising from the opposite end of said body and in advance of the depending portion, a second jaw carried by the pivoted arms and being adapted to swing with the arms toward and away from the first mentioned jaw, a link pivotelly secured to the second mentioned jaw, a handle fulci-umed in the bifurcations of the upward 10 inclined end and being pivoted at its end to the links, and means for securing the body to a support.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
LAUREN B. MERRIAM.
