Description
E. R. GALEBACH.
-COTTER PIN EXTRACTOR. APPLICATION mm um. 13, 1921.
1,39 543 Patented NOV- 29, 1921 stares EDWIN ROY GALEBACI-I, or LEBANON, rENNsizLvnNIA.
comma-rm Exrnncroa.
Application filed January 13, 1921. Serial No. 436,916.
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN ROY GALEBACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Cotter-Pin Extractor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to. cotter pin extractors and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising a pair of pivoted members, said members being pivoted together adjacent one of their ends, which ends terminate in oppositely extending lugs, one of said lugs being adapted to engage in the eye of a cotter pin to beextracted the other lug being adapted to engage a surface adjacent the cotter pin and forming a fulcrum when it is desired to give a twist-to the cotter pin when the lug carrying ends of the pivoted members are forced apart during a cot er pin extracting operation.
YVith the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, showing the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit 'of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the extractor, showing the same in position for use.
Fig. 2 is in a plan view of the extractor showing the same in position for use.
Fig, 3 is a detail collective view of the jaw ends of the pivoted members,
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a bolt and 2 a nut, which nut is held from coming off of the bolt 1 by means of a cotter pin 3, which passes transversely through an aperture in the bolt 1. To remove cotter pins so positioned, it has been found extremely diflicult, therefore to obviate this ditficulty the extractor tool 4 is provided.
The extractor tool 4 comprises pivoted members 5 and 6 which are pivotally connected as at 7. The ends 8 of the members 5..and 6 form handles adapted to be gripped Specification of Letters Patent. 1 Patented N 29, 1 92] during a cotter pin extracting operation and when so gripped and forced together the sprlng 9 is compressed, which spring 9 normally holds the jaws 10 and 11 of the extractor in engagement with each other and closed. Extending outwardly at substantially a right angle with'the side of the jaw 10 is a cotter pin engaging lug 12, which lug at its end is provided-with a hooked portion 13 which engages in the eye 14 of the cotter pin, said hook preventing the lug from coming out of engagement with the eye 14 of the cotter pin during a cotter 7 From the above it will be seen that a cotter pin extracting tool is provided which is simple in constructlon and one by which cotter pins may be easily and quickly removed, without damaging the pin. It will also be seen that by providing the hooked end 13 on the lug 12 that slipping of the tool during a cotter pin extracting operation is obviated.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A cotter pin extractor comprising a pair of members pivoted together intermediate their ends, the ends at one side of the pivot extending away from each other and forming handles, a spring interposed between said handles, the other ends of said pivoted mem bers forming jaws engaging each other and. held in engagement by the spring between the handles, one of said jaws having an outwardly extending arm terminating in a hook adapted to engage in the eye of a cotter pin, the other jaw being provided with a lug extending outwardly from its side and in the opposite direction to the hooked arm of the adjacent jaw, said last named lug forming a fulcruming point for'the tool during a twisting operation of the tool, simultaneously with a pin extracting operation.
2. A cotter pin extractor comprising a pair of members pivoted together adjacent one of their ends, a cotter pin engaging lug carried by one of the ends adjacent the pivotal point and extending outwardly from the side thereof, a lug extending outwardly from the end of the other member adjacent the pivotal point in an opposite direction to the cotter pin engaging lug, and spring means for normally holding the ends of the pivoted members at the opposite ends to the 10 lug carried ends apart.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
EDWIN ROY GALE'BAOH.
