Application filed June 6,
To all whomit may concern l `Be it known that l, STEPHEN It. Burnin, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State vof California,` have invented certain neiv and useful improvements in ya Signal ifittachment 'for Flash Lights; and .l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, und exactdescription of the inventioin suclras will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains-` to maire and use the same.
' This invention has relationito certain new and useful improvements in signals and has f'or its primary object the provision of an attachment :vliich may be readily applied to a flashlight to convert the same into an electric signal device.
The invention'has'oranother object the provision "of a signal attachment of the character stated which will be especially adapted for use in theaters vand other places to indicate to partiesat a distance the number' of vacant seats and the `location thereof and to direct the parties desiring such seats to the properlocation in the theater. A The invention has Jfor a Jfurther object the provision of a signal attachment of the character stated Which Will beof extremely siniple construction, highly efficient in use and which may loe readily manufactured at a small cost and applied to the ordinary hand. flashlight now Vin e general use.
The` invention has for a still further ob- .jeetthe provision of a signal attachment of the characterv stated which will be composed of the minimum number of parts, which may readily assembled and clamped upon the flashlight and which will operate upon ina lnipulation oftheflaslilight. y l 1 v The invention has for still another object the -.piovision of a signal attachment of the character stated in which the outer c ylindrical casing may be provided with a transparent Aplate in aside opening' thereof to disclose` one of the numbers on the rotatable inner casing andi'vvhich rotatable inner casing may also be provided with openings in itsopposite ends andV a hinged closure plate `for the opening at ,theouter end of the inner cylinder, whereby the i'ull benefit of the rays of light from the bulb of theflashlight' may be utilized todirect the parties to the vacant seatsi by swinging the closure platel to opened position.c

1921.` serial no. 475,525.
The invention has :tor a still further object the provision of a signal attachment of the character stated 'in which the inner `ing` `may be readily secured in or removed from the outer casing or rotated Within said outer casingV to bring the different numbers before the opening oi said outer casing.
A still further object of the invention re- .sides in the `provision of a flashlight signal which Will be of simple construction and operation and'in which an outer casing may be located at the bulb end of the flashlight and an inner casingrotatably mounted in the outer casingto bring numbers or other characters thereon in front ol an (mening ot the outer casing.y and a cover for the inner casing Which may be readily opened or closed, as desired.
The invention has for still another object the provision of a signal attachment of the character stated which will be constructed in such a manner that it may be readily clampedupon or removed from a flashlight of conventional form, as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in vieni, as will appear as the description proceeds. the invention consists in the novel construction. combination and arrangement of cooperating elements as hereinafter more specifically set iorth. claimed and shoiifn in the :ic-compaIrvineT drawings forming a part of the present application and in Whichz- Figure l 4is an 'elevation of a conventional forni of il ashlin'lit with my signal attachment .aiin'lied thereto.
Figure 2 is an end view thereof with the closure plate in opened position.
Figure 3 is an 'enlarged longitudinal section through the signal attachment. apor- .ti'on of thelflashlight being1 shown in elevation.
Figure 4 is a transverse section `on the plane indicatedby the line 4 4 ot F1 leure l, on` a slightly enlarged scale. n
Figure 5 is a detail viewgin end elevation 'of the signalling attachment. lookinga at the inner or clamp carryingr end thereof.
Figure r5 is a viewin side elevation of a modified form cf the invention.
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional View of the modified form` of the invention.
Figure 8 is a detail vien7 in side elevation ofthe inner casingof the modified form. and
Figure 9A is a detail 'view in eind elevation of said inner casingd necessary. It is to be understood, however,
that while the preferred embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is l. A signaling attachment for a flashlight comprising the combination with the flashlight casing, of an outer end casing extended from the above end of said flashlight casing, said end casing having a display opening and an open outer end, a display opening rotatably mounted in said end casing and proj ecting from the open end thereof, said inner casing having characters thereon for display before the side opening of said end casing, said inner casing having an annular flange projecting past the' sides of the end casing to provide means for rotating said inner casing, said inner casing having an open outer end, a hinge cover for said open outer end of the casing, and means for swinging said cover to open position.
2. A signal attachment for a flashlight consisting of a casing adapted to be illumi nated by the flashlight and resting on the adjacent end wall of the iashlight, said casing having an opening in its base into which the bulls eye of the flashlight extends, a second casing on and movable relatively to the first casing, the casings having signal means for cooperation through movement of the second casing, clamp means engageable with the flashlight at a distance from the said end wall, and attaching arms for said clamp means on the casing and projecting beyond said base.
3. A signal attachment for a flashlight consisting of an outer casing for mounting on and illumination by a flashlight, an inner casing movable axially of the outer casing, said outer casing having an opening, the inner casing having signal. means for display at said opening, and an operating flange at the outer end of the inner casing eX- tending outwardly an d overlapping the outer end of the outer casing.
4. A signal attachment for a flashlight consisting of an outer casing for mounting on and illumination by the ilashlight, an. inner casing movable axially of the outer casing, said outer casing having an opening, the inner casing having signal means for display at said opening, and an operating fiange at the outer end of the inner casing extending outwardly and overlapping the outer end of the outer casing, the outer casing having a rib interiorly thereof, and the inner casing having a retaining finger cooperating with said rib.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
