Application filed November To all whom t may concern Be it known that l', THOMAS F. Genn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yonkers, in the county of lVestchester and State of New l'ork, have invented certain new and useful improvements in ldlrenches, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has relation to wrenches and more particularly to pipe wrenches; it being the primary object of the present invention to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be efiicien't in operation and convenient to handle, owing toits light weight.
A further object is to provide a device including but a small number of parts, one of auch parts comprising a movable jaw-intended to normally remain in close proximity to a stationary jaw and adjustable away from the stationary jaw to permit insertion of a pipe or other object thereunder. y
With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, and
combination of parts hereinafter more fullydescribed and pointed out in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the improved wrench,
Figure 2 a bottom view, and
Figure 3 a vertical section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows.
The wrench handle 1 may be made to any size for handling and is preferably of a narrow width as will be noted from the lower edge 2, shown in the drawing. The handle preferably tapers toward the outer or gripping end 3 and has at its opposite end a stationary jaw l, formed integral therewith, but of a greater '\'\'idth, thereby providing a shoulder 5 on each side of the wrench handle. That portion olf the handle immediately rearward of the stationary jaw 4L and to which the outer or movable j aw 6 is attached is slightly enlarged or thickened by the outwardly curved edge portions 7 and 8 respectively so as to strengthen the wrench handle at this point, against the strain incident thereto during the using of the wrench. The under face 2 of the wrench handle 1 is provided in proximity to the j aw t with a channel 9, in which is partially received a coiled spring 10, one end of which is fastened to a screw 11 carried by the wrench handle adjacent one end of the channel.. The other end of the coil spring 10 is hooked about a bolt varms 16 and 17 respectively which embrace is, i919. serial nofssaeee.
12 carried by the outer jaw G. The channel tlserves as a path and guide for the spring 10 preventing said spring from riding over either side of the handle when it is expanded by movement of the jaw (S and permits the spring to ride evenly over the arcuate edge 8 of the wrench handle.
The outer jaw 6 comprises a solid jaw portion 13 substantially larger than the inner jaw tbeing projected an` appreciable distance beyond the latter toprovide an auxiliary or grippingportion 13 and provided with a concaved innerface upon which are formed teeth 14, adapted to engagea pipe or other object insertedbetween the outer jaw 13 and the inner jaw 4t. rlhe shank 15 of the j aw extends angularly away from. lthe toothed face 14 and is bifurcated to provide thewrench handlel, rearwardly of the shoulder 5 of the inner jaw land are pivotally supported upon a bearing pin 18. Connecting the-arms 1G and 17 at their outer ends", is the cross pin 12, previously referredto, and to which is hooked one end Vof the coil spring 10.
The coil spring 10 is tensioned so as to draw -upon the cross pin 12, moving the outer jaw. 6 upon its pivot pin 18 and bringing the toothedl face 14 in close proximity to the outer curved tooth bearing face 19 of the stationary jaw 4.; such movement of said l outer jaw being controlled or limited by reason of t-he cross pin 12 abutting against the iianges of the channeled-portion of the under face 2 of the wrench handle, such. al'autment occurring after the pin has ridden over the hump portion S, as indicated by the dotted lines of Figure 1, and thereby allowing the end of the coil spring 1() which is secured to the pin 12 to freely travel within the groove 9, whereby the wear-vof the coil spring against the inner face of the groove 9 is eliminated.
In operation, the pipe or other object to be gripped is inserted between the jaws of the wrench, the outer 6 being moved about its pivot and expanding the spring 10 to widen the space between the respective teeth bearing faces of the toothed jaws sufciently to accommodate the pipe therebetween. Due to the ret-ractive tendency of the spring the outer jaw 6 is always retained in close adherence to the pipe, etc. and forces it up against the teeth of the inner iaw 4, so that upon movement of the wrench handle,
the teeth ot the respective jaws are caused to bite into the pipe, etc., so that it is forced to turn with movement et the jaws. lWhenever it becomes necessary `to separate the jaws to any considerable extent, as when the pipe or other object upon which the wrench is to be used, is of an unusually large circumference, such separation may be readily acconiplished by placing the wrench up against the pipe, etc., so that the teeth of the auxiliary gripping portion 'l-"5 ot the outer jaw irmly engages the pipe, etc.7 and by usingv this .portion as a ti'ilerun'i and bearing down upon the wrench handle until tbe jaw t is clamped against the object, the teeth ot both `iaws may be brought to bear againstthe object sutliciently tor the purpose ot turning` it. The movement or the jaw 6 in separating from the inner jaw t is limited by means ot the cross pin l2 which abuts with the under edge 2 ot the wrench handle, sub* sequent to its movement over the bumped edge 8. lt is thus seen that the pin l2 limits movement ot the outer jaw either forwardly or rearwardly olf the inner jaw 4 and conseduently its position between the arms 1G and 17 is a controlling tac-.tor in determining;- the extent of movement or' the out-er jaw, depending` upon the proximity ot its position with respect to the outer en mity ot the arms, or its nearness to the channeled tace ot the wrench handle.
Having` thus described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters lpatent is l, A wrench comprising' a handle having` a serrated jaw and formed with a reeniorced thickened body portion adjacent said jaw, a serratedjaw pivotally mounted cent-rally or said thickened body and provided with arms straddling the sides ot the handle, the ends of said arms being` normally disposed outwardly ot the handle, a transverse pin secured between the arms, a resilient member fixed at one end to the pin and at its opposite end to 'the handle, said` member lying,r within a grooved guide in the handle and thickened body portion, when the jaws are moved to certain positions, said pin being adapted to ride over the said enlarged portion or the handle when the resilient member is distorted and constituting a stop ior the movable liaw in its open position.
2. A wrench comprising a handle having` a serrated aw, and .termed with a reinforced thickened body portion adjacent said jaw, a serrated jaw pivotaliy mounted centrally oit the said thickened body portion and provided with arms stii'addling` the sides oit the handle, the ends ot said arms being normally disposed outwardly or' the handle, transverse pin secured between the arms, a resilient member fixed at one end to the pin and at its opposite end to the handle, said member lying' within a grooved guide in the handle and the thickened body portion, said pin adapted to engage the side edges ot the groove for the purpose ot allowing the ends ot the spring connected thereto to `freely travel within the said groove when the jaw is moved to its open position, said pin adapted to ride over the said enlarged portion ot the handle when the resilient member is distorted and constituting a stop tor the movable iaw in its open position.
