RAZOR-BLADE POCKETKNIFE.

Be it known that I, ANTHONY A. Tunes, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Razor-Blade Pocketknives, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

My invention relates to improvements in pocket knives, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed:

An object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described in which a cutting blade may be sheathed within a combined handle and sheath when the device is not in use and extended at will to permit the use of the device in performing the functions for which intended.

A further object of my invention 1s to provide a device of the character described in which a safety razor blade of a well known type is detachably held in position to serve as the cutting blade of the device.

A further object of my invention is to provide a simple inexpensive device of. the type described in which razor blades that would otherwise be discarded are utihzed.

A further object of my invention is to provide a device of the type described that is simple in construction and operation, and thoroughly practical commercially.

Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out intho appended claim.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this application, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of a blank used in forming a portion of the device,

In carrying out my invention, I make use of a substantially rectangular flat sheet 1 of a light metal or similar material, as shown in Fig. 1. I provide a combined handle and sheath by folding an end extension 2 of the sheet 1 along the line a, a side portion 3 along the line b, and the opposite side portion 4 along the line. a into the positions shown in Fig. 4, thereby forming a combined handle and case or sheath that is closed at The latter is shown in its developed form in Fig. 2 and is bent intermediately along the line at to provide spring clamping arms 6 and 7 that are approximately parallel with one another. The clamping-arm 7 is fashioned with a recess 8 in its inner wall adapted to receive an end portion of a safety razor blade 9 of a well known type and being provided with an upstanding stud 10 that fits an opening 11 that is-ordinarily provided in the razor-"blade 9. The arm 6 of the clip is fashioned with spaced apart parallel raised portions 12 adjacent its end and these raised portions bear against the razor blade 9 to firmly maintain the latter in position on the stud l0 and between the arms 6 and '7 when the clip 5 has been retracted in the combined handle and sheath, as illustrated in Fig. 3.

It will be noted that the body portion of the sheet 1 has a longitudinally extending slot 13 therethrough and extending from adjacent one end approximately half the length of the sheet. A similar slot 14 is provided in the side portion 4 and this slot extends from a point adjacent the opposite end of the sheet 1 to a point beyond the transverse middle line of the sheet so that the combined handle and sheath has slots in the opposite side walls thereof that have portions in registry. The arm 6 of the blade holding clip is formed with a threaded opening 15 adapted to receive a screw 16 that is projected through the slot 13 and is movable therealong.

From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The blade 9 is extended beyond the end of the combined handle and sheath or case by grasping the screw 16 and moving the same to the forward end of the slot 13. The blade holding clip is formed of a material having spring qualities and the width of the pocket of the icomlbined handle and sheath is such as-to insure a snug fit of the blade holding clip therewithin. quently, pressure is applied against the arms 6 and 7 so that the razor blade 9 is firmly clamped therebetween and may be used in performing the function for which the device is intended. illustrated in Fig. 4. The arms 6 and 7 may then be moved apart and a new blade substituted.

When the device is notin use the blade may be retracted by moving the screw 16 1 along the slot 13 toward the rear end thereof until the blade is entirely sheathed within the handle as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. The device may then be carried about in the pocket of a garment, such as a vest pocket, without danger of injury to the garment, and can be placed in operative condition quickly and easily when it is desired to use the same. The device is particularly suitable for use in cutting operations where it is essential that the blade be very sharp and not, necessary that a very strong blade be used. The device can be manufactured cheaply and makes for economy in that the blades used therein and served the purpose for which originally intended and would otherwise be discarded.
