RECEPTACLE FILED MARl 5 1921 Patented F eb. 6, 1923.
ROBERT O. DUNNING, F LEVANT, MAINE.
RECEPTACLE.
Application led March 5, 1921. Serial No. 449,630.
To all whom dt may concern: Figure is a vertical sectional View of a 55 Be it known that I, ROBERT O. DUNNING, combined match and cigarette box;
a citizen of the United States, residing at Figure 6 is a top plan view thereoi with Levant, in the county of Penobscot and the top cap removed;
5 State of Maine, have invented certain new Referring to these drawings, 10 designates and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of a body which may be made of wood, hard 60 which the following is a specification, referrubber composition, or any other suitable ence being had to the accompanying drawmaterial` and which is formed to provide ings. a central compartment 11 which extends 10 This invention relates to receptacles, and into the body but not entirely therethrou h.
particularly to receptacles on the order of Exteriorly of this central compartment 11 65 match boxes. there are formed a series of longitudinall The general object of my invention is to extending delivery compartments 12 Whic providea receptacle of this character adaptare open at opposite e'nds of the body.

I have illustrated the body as being central storage compartment and a series of surroundedat its middle by a band 14 of concentrically disposed delivery compartmetal or other suitable material, thoughl ments, and provide a cover or cap for one do not wish tot be limited to this.

This cap is held in place Other objects will appear in the course of upon the body by means of a centrally disthe following description. posed, headed screw 2O or equivalent device My invention is illustrated in the accomwhereby the cap may be rotated around the 45 panying drawings, wherein 1 body. The cap is formed on its outer face Figure 1 is an elevation of a match box with one single perforation 21 which i's 10@ constructed in accordance with my invenadapted to register with any of the chambers tion; 12 and the cap is held from accidental rotap Figure 2 is a vertical section on the line tion by means of a spring projected pin 22 50 2 2 of Figure l; inserted in the side wall of the body and pro- Figure 3 is an under side plan view of jecting out therefrom. This pin or detent is 105 the match box; beveled upon one face, as at 23. so that it Figure 4 is a section oIr the line 4--4 of acts as a pawl and engages any one of a Figure 2; series of perforations 24 formed in the eide wallof the cap. This detent pawl 23 acts to hold the cap in any rotated position to permit the rotation of the cap in one direction and one direction only.
In the use of this device, the chambers 12 are each to receive a match, the head of the match being preferably directed toward the cap 15. The central storage compartment 11 may be filled with matches for subsequent use. After the receptacle is filled, the cap 15 is put in place and locked by its bayonet slots and the pins 18. At this time the opening 21 is disposed over the blank space 13 and if a match is desired the cap 19 is rotated one step so as to carry its aperture 21 over one ofthe chambers 12. Then the match, of course` is easily discharged into the hand. The detent 22 holds the cap from any further accidental rotation until the next match is wanted, when the cap is again turned one step, and so on until all the matches have been discharged. Then the Cchambers 12 are refilled with matches and a new supply is vdisposed in the chamber 11. The chamber 11 is designed to contain at least sufficient matches to refill the chambers 12.
I do not wish to be limited to the use of this device as a match safe or box-or even as a pocket match safe or box, as it also may be used for discharging cigarettes, in which case the chambers 12 will, of course have to be made large` enough to receive each individual cigaretteandthe chamber 11 large enough to receive a charge of cigarettes. I have illustrated in Figure 5 a receptacle de# signed to containl both cigarettes and matches, in which case the cigarettes will be contained within the relativelylarge chambers 25 and the matches within the relatively small chambers 26, these chambers 26 being disposed inward of the chamber 25 and there being two perforations 27 in the cap 19 sothat the one step rotation of the cap will discharge both a cigarette and a match. Of course obviously the relative positions of the match chambers 26 and the cigarette chambers 25 may be changed so that a match .and a cigarette will be alternately disposed.
Preferably the spaces 13 will be marked plainly so as to indicate at a glance that the matches in the chambers 12 have become exhausted and thattln-y ase needs refilling It will be understood that this device might be made for a pocket, or lforthe reception oit' matches for household use and. that it might be mounted on a holder in the latter case so as to discharge the matches downward as the cap 19 is rotated. I
While I have illustrated a device which is particularly ladapted for the discharge of matches, I do not wish to be limited "thereto, as it is obvious that it mi ht be used for discharging othervarticles. either do I wish to be limited to any particular construction of the box. The middle portion 14 might also be formed with a match scratching surface 28.
I claim:
