Description

Feb. 6, 1923. l,444073 T. M. HUFFMAN. COVER FOR SAPYBucKETs.
FlLED JUNE 2. 1922.
THMPSON M, HUFFMAJT, CF DUNKRK, INDANA.
COVER FR SAP BUCKETS.
Application filed. June 2,
To all whom t 'may concern.'
Be it known that l, Triorrrson M. HUrn MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dunkirk, in the county of Jay, State ot Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Covers for Sap Buckets; and l do hereby declare the tollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in sap buckets and particularly to covers therefor.
One object of the invention is to provide a cover for a sap bucket which is held firmly in closed position and which can ben easily removed a suiiicient distance to permit sap being poured from the bucket.
Another object is to provide a cover for a sap bucket which is spring held in closed position and which is also capable of being; swung' into position at the side ot' the bucket, when the bucket is to be cleaned or when a number are to be stacked away For storage.
A further object is to provide a cover which will exclude flies, and other insects as well as dust and like foreign substances from the bucket.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent From the YFollowing` description when taken in coiuiectiou with the mfcoinpanyiiu drawing.
ln the drawing.
Figure l is a rear elevation of a sap bucket made in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a side elevation showing the bucket in tilted posit-ion and with the cover moved back` and the spring); engagingr the lugs.
1922. Serial No. 565,307.
the cover and to the ears 18 are coil springs l5, said springs exerting downward pull on the lid or cover to hold the same firmly on the bucket. This will eiiectively prevent rain entering the bucket and polluting the sap.
in the operation oit the device, the bucket is grasped in one hand and lifted from the tree, after which the lid or -cover is raised suihciently to disengage the flange from the mouth oi the bucket, and then pushed back until the springs engage the lugs 1.2. This will limit the backward movement of the lid, so that a sufficient space is made through which the contents ofthe bucket may be poured. Attention is directed to the fact that the springs will thus be put under tension, and that upon releasing' the lid, the springs will throw the lid back into closed position, with its flange reembracing` the mouth of the bucket. rThe springs and lun` not only limit the opening` movement oi? but close it, automatically, and maintain same resiliently.
rlthe peripheral edge oi the cover 1+i is turned downwardly, as shown at 14', to form a flange, which embraces the mouth et the bucket, whereby eiiectively excluding flies and other insects. Furthermore, the flange serves to maintain the cover in secure position on the bucket, against beingr blown open by the wiufh thus excluding;- dust, dirt and rain.
liben the bucket is to be cleaned or stored away, the lid is moved into the position shown in Figure 3.
Vilhat is claimed is.
l. A sap bucket comprising a body, a cover for the body, resilient connections between the cover and the body 'for maintaininn the cover is closed position, the cover beine' capable et sliding); movement transverselv of the mouth of the bucket, and neas for limiting the movement of the Vcvei in one direction, to place the resilient ieans under tension for restoring the cover to closed position. l
A sap bucket comprising a body, diav ineiically opposite stop lugs ou the body` a tlauned cover tor tbe brcket` movable transversely ot the mouth ci the bucket into open and closed positions` springs secured to tbc cover and to the sides ot the body, and arranged to hold the cover in closed position at times and against the front tace of the body at times, the said lugs serving to limit the opening movement of' the cover by engagement Ol the springs tlieieiigainst, und tensioning ol" the springs whereby to autoinzitieiilly close the cover when released.
l. A sep bucket including u body, zi eoiei movable transversely of the mouth of the bucket, resilient means connecting the coi/'ei' of the body7 :incl means on the body for engugen'ient by the resilient ineens upon ie manually moving` the cover into open posi- 'tion to limit the Opening movement of the @over :ind to tension'tlio resilient ineens for closing tlie cover upon being released.A
In testimony wliei'eo-, ztilix iny signaliiie, in the presence oit two witnesses.
