Be it known that l, JAMES R. MoFFA'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Feeding Mechanisms for @verseaming Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in feeding mechanisms for overseaming machines, and more particularly anoverseaming machine of the cup feed type, such as shown, for example, in the (nderdonk Patent 1,187,784, granted May 4, i915.
An object of the present invention is to provide means for positively driving the outer feed cup or roller by means of a shaft which is so constructed as to permit said outer feed cup or roller to be moved away from the inner feed cup or roller to permit the insertion and removal of the material operated upon.

The invention above noted is directed to a feeding mechanism for a cup feed type of Von the line sewingy mfachine that is, a machine wherein two feedcups or rollersrotateabout verti-.

The needle moves in a horizontal pathand the looper moves rfrom one side of the material f to'the other, forming overseaming stitches. In the present machine, both the inner and the outer feed cups are positively driven.
The outer' feed Cup is mountedso that it may bemoved toward and from the inner feed cup to accommodate different thicknesses of materialv and to permit the insertion and removal of the materialv to be stitched. The cross driving shaft for posi;- tively rotating the outer feed cup is provided with universal joints and atele'scoping section, so as to permit this freedom of movement and without disturbing thepo-sitive driving connection for the outer feed Cup to the train ofinechanisinoperating the same. i
Referring more in vdetail to the drawings, my improvements are shown and applied to a sewing machine consisting of a main casing 1.,.in which is .mounted to reciprocate a needle bar carrying av needle 2. The needle bar, as above noted, reciprocates in a horizontal plane. Co-opei-ating with this needle baiis` a looper 3 which moves from one sideof the fabric to the otheigthus foi-mingen overseaming stitch. This type` of machine is common inthe art and, further description of the stitching mechanism is not thought necessary. 1
The material is clamped'and supported during the stitching operation between an inner feed cup 4 and anv outer feed cup 5. The inner feed cup et is carried by a shaft 6 mounted in a bracket 7 secured to the. casing. At the lower end of the shaft 6 there is an intermittent clutch mechanism 8, which turns the shaft step by step'.` This clutch mechanism is also very. common in the art and ay detail description thereof is l not thought necessary. The operating arm 9 of the clutch'mechanisni is connectedVv by means of a link l0 to an arm ll, carried at the lower end of the shaft 12, mounted in Suitable bearings on the mainv casing l. This shaft 12 carries an arm 13 at its upper end to whichan eccentric strap lil is connected. with an eccentric on the main shaft l5. The .outer feed cup 5 isv carried by a shaft 16, mounted in a bracket 17. Said shaft is provided with a beveled gear 18 at its upper fend which meshes with a beveled gear 19 ycarried,by a cross drivingshaft 20. The cross shjaft20-fcarries a beveled gear 21 meshing with at'b'eveled gear 22, carried by a Vverticalfshaft 23. the shaft carrying the outer feed cup, without disturbing thedriviiig connections with this outer feed cup. .Thetelescoping sections also aid in the swinging "of Vvthe parts withoutdisturbing the driving connections as will be obvious from the -above description. l Y y The beveled gears 21 and 22 are housed by acasing 44 which is secured to the bear- Y ing 45 for the inner section ofthe cross shaft 20. The outer gears 18 and 19 are enclosed by a casing46 which-isl 'secured totthebean ing 47 for the 'outer section of the shaft 20, said bearing being mounted on the bracket 17.
The bracket supporting'the outer feed cup is pivoted above the feed cups and the drivv ing` cross shaft for operating the outer feed cup Vis 'above the pivotal ysupport for/the bracket 17 so that the driving connections for the outer feed cup are lentirely* out of the way, 'and at the same time permit ilree movement of the outer feed cup 'without in anyway disturbing the drixfiiig connections. Furthermore, the supporting arm 28 for the bracket 17 may be adjusted upon loosening the lscrews 29, and the outer 1feed cup posb tioned either nearer toor farther fron'rthe inner feed cup, as desired.
