Abstract
378,625. Sewing-machines. UNION SPECIAL MACHINE CO., 400, North Franklin Street, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Christensen, N. V. ; 400, North Franklin Street, Chicago, U.S.A.) July 23, 1931, No. 21033. Convention date, Dec. 17, 1930. [Class 112.] Upper and lower shafts, connecting; feeding work by wheels.-A sewing machine, more especially for sewing heavy wide sections of fabric in forming relatively large articles, has the upper needle-actuating shaft and the lower shaft which drives the complemental stitchforming devices inclined at an angle to one another so that they may be connected together by a relatively short connection, e.g. by skew gearing. The machine, as shown, comprises a long supporting base 1 enclosing a main shaft 46 and having attached, by bolts, to members integral with the base, a standard 3 with an overhanging arm 4 housing a needleactuating shaft 10. The shafts 10, 46 each consists of short end sections supported in bearings connected by universal driving connections to a long aligned hollow centre section. The inner end sections 10a, 46a, Fig. 4a, carry interengaging skew gears 87, 86, respectively, by which the inclined upper shaft 10 is driven from the lower horizontal one 46, the shaft 46 being driven by a pulley 80. The loopers 40 are moved into and out of the needle loops by a link 42 which is oscillated through an arm 43 by an eccentric strap 44 co-operating with an eccentric on the main shaft 46. The looper support 41 is oscillated to give a needle avoiding movement to the loopers by an arm 47 co-operating with an eccentric on the shaft 46. The needle bar 8 is reciprocated by a crank disc 12 on the upper shaft section 10c, and the work is fed by a feed dog 48 co-operating with a presser foot 17 as well as by a puller feed comprising an upper spring-pressed roller 29 carried by the overhanging arm 4 and a roller 56 mounted on a shaft 54 which is oscillated intermittently in one direction only through clutch mechanism contained in a housing 64 and driven by an eccentric 67 on the main shaft. The shaft 46 may be turned manually when desired by pushing in a wheel 73 to engage a gear wheel 71 on the axis thereof with a gear wheel 68 on the shaft 46.
