M- R. BUIKEMA. CORN PLOW SHOVEL. FILED 0:31. 30. 1920.
Patented Jan. 39, 1923.
warren stares Conn rLow SHOVEL.
Application filed October 30; 1920. Serial No. 420,538.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Mnzvrz'o lfiolnnim, citizen of the United States of rimerica, residing at Morrison, in the county of White side and State of Illinois, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Corn Plow Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of the kind above mentioned wherein adjusting means is provided to vary the angular disposition of the shovel; and to provide further means independent of the first said means whereby the shovel may be readily removed for sharpening or repair or replacement.
T o the exact construction in which it is shown and described, the invention is not to be restricted. The right is reserved to make such changes or alterations as actual reductions to practice may suggest, in so far as such changes or alterations are compatible in spirit with the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings I Figure 1 is a top plan view showing th main plow beam and the attendant shovel.
Figure 2 is an enlarged detail view partly in elevation and partly in section showing the application oi the invention as an attaching means between the shovel and the beam.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4: is a detail perspective view of the invention which comprises per se the connecting means between the shovel and the beam.
The beam 1 has suitably connected therewith by rivets or any other means a supplementary depending beam or shovel beam 2 to which is connected the shovel 3 provided with the usual point 1, a block or plate 5 of rectangular shape being secured by suitable fasteners, such as rivets 6, to the shovel 3. The block or plate 5 is det-ac-hably engageable with a socket element comprising a plate 7 of similar shape but having its up per and lower edges formed to provide lateral flanges 8 under cut on their inner faces for engagement with the bevel edges with which the plate 5 is provided. The plate 7 so that the shovel may be adjusted angula-rly or vertically with reference to the supplemental beam 2, is connected to the sleeve 9 by means of rivets 10, the sleeve being in surrounding relation to and slidably engaged with the supplemental beam This sleeve is formed near the lower end with an opening 11 and is also formed with spaced ears 12 between which is mounted a lever 13 pivotally carried by a pintle 1e spanning the ears. The end of the lever is directed toward the sleeve and its nose 15 passes through the opening in the sleeve that it may enter any one ofthe recesses 16 provided in the beam 2. The handle end of the lever is formed with a lug 17 while the sleeve is similarly formed with anopposed lug 18 and both these lugs serve as supporting means for the extremities of an expansion spring 19 functioning to normally hold the nose 15 of the lever in engagement with any of the recesses 16 in which it may enter.
Obviouslythe sleeve may be adjusted angularly or vertically on the beam 2 to effect any desired elevation or any desired disposition of the shovel 3, the desired position of the shovel being obtained by selecting the proper recess 16 with which the nose 15 may engage. I
The plate 5 is designed for sliding engagement with the flanges 8 of the plate 7 and the latter on one side is formed with an abutment flange 8 against which one edge of the plate 5 may abut. On the opposite side edge of the plate 7 there is carried an angle plate 20, the flange 21 of which is connected to the plate 7 by means of a bolt 22 anchored in the plate 7. The bolt projects loosely through the flange 21 and is surrounded by a coil spring 23 which is compressed between the plate 7 and a nut 24 carried by the bolt. Obviously the spring serves to keep the plate 20 in a position where its flange 25 will overlap the edge of the plate 5 and it and the flanges 8 and 8" of the plate 7 will serve to holdthe shovel attached to the sleeve. Desiring to remove the shovel, the plate 20 is moved in opposition to the spring 23 and when the flange 25 clears the edge of the plate 5 it and the plow 3 to which it is attached may be readily disconnected for repair or replacement or whatever is desired.
The invention having been described,'what is claimed as new and useful is 1. A. device of the kind described including an attaching sleeve, a plate carried thereby and provided with laterally disposed flanges on three edges, a blade, a plate connected with the blade and engageable with the first said plate between the flanges there- Q igi iaese mi and stop plate carried by the first said plate and movable into and out of a position cooperating with the first said flanges to hold the secend said plate in. engagement -with said flanges to permit its removal tlierefrein.
2. A device of the kind described including an attacking sleeve, 2 plate carried thereby and provided with laterally disposed flanges on three edges, a blade, a plate 00nneetecl with the blade and engageable with the first sai l plate between. the fian thereof, and a cr0sssectienally L-shaped stop plate carried by the said plate, the latter having hell's sliilabl y engaging openings in one of the flanges tie L-shapecl plate and springs in surrounding relation to the bolts and bearing on the said flange to maintain the triangular plate yieldingly in a position cooperating with the flanges of: the first said plate t0 held the second said plate in engagement ith the same.
In testimony whereof l ailii'; my signature.
