Description
R. BUHDETT.
Reed-Organs.
N0- 44,382 Patenrednommsvs.
n i T i UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
RILEY EUEDETT, or ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN REED-ORGANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,382, dated November 11, 1 73; application filed July 26, 1873.
To all whom it may concern De it known that I, RILEY BURDETT, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Reed-Organs, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to combine the ordinary organ-reeds with steel vibrators, and providing these steel vibrators with a separate sounding-board, to which they are attached, all to be operated separately or together by means of a suitable action, and so as to obtain a body of tone from the steel vibrators greater than can be had from them when attached to the reed-organ in the usual manner, as well as to furnish these steel vibrators an independent action and soundingboard.
This device is illustrated in the accompanying drawing,` as follows: Figure l is a transverse sectional view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a front view thereof.
A indicates the foundation-board of a reedorgan, B, the socket-board thereof; C, my sounding-board; D, a cam to guide the jack F in its downward motion; E, a dog attached to the cam D to guide the jack F in its upward motion, so as to cause the jack F to clear the steel vibrators as it passes upward. G indicates the inetal bar to which the steel vibrators are attached. H indicates the ordinary organ-key, to which the jack F is attached, and which operates this jack. The cam D is provided with slotted ends to allow of its being adjusted to the action ofthe jack F. The
jack F and dog E are provided with springs to insure their accurate action. I indicates the reed-board; J J, the reed-seats; K K, the trackerpins.
This invention does not cover the use of other sets of reeds than such as are placed in front of the trackerpins K K, because the sounding-board C is so located as to prevent the use of a set of reeds at the back of the reed-board I, and such as are usually placed there. In all reed-organs having` steel-vibrator attachments which have come under my notice a full and satisfactory resonance of these vibrators has been sacrificed in order to attach them to the reed-boards in general use. By doing; away with what is ordinarily termed the back set of reeds, and by various other modications of the reed-board, (as well as ofthe steel-vibrator acton,) I attain, in this invention, a proper resonance of these vibrators, and a valuable artistic combination thereof with the reed-organ.
I claim- 1. The sounding-board C, in combination with the steel bar G, steel vibrators, jack F, cam D, and dog E, or their equivalents, for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the socket-board D with the reed-board I and reed-seats J J, when said parts are arranged substantially as described.`
