Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLIFFORD ROBERT STEPHEN JOHN HALLE, OF LONDON, ENGLAND.
PIANO-GAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,087, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed June 1, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLIFFORD ROBERT STEPHEN J OHN HALLn, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at 50 Lincolns Inn Fields, London,-England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Belating to Pianoforte-Oases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in pianoforte-cases; and it consists of the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more specifically described, illustrated in the accompany ing drawing, and particularly pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.
The drawing forming a part of this specification illustrates a sectional elevation of my improved pianoforte-case.
Referring to the drawing by reference-letters, the upper back part cl of the case is pro vided with a box c, which collects and concentrates the musical sounds for distribution into an apartment, at soundboard f, fitted therein, directing the sound to outside the box 6. This box 6 may be formed byheightening the case of the piano above the wrestplank g and leaving the interior hollow, the box thus formed being supplied with a vibratory soundboard f and a hinged door h, which opens at such an angle as to direct the sound in any given direction.
The drawing shows the case in skeleton; but it will be understood that the actions are fitted in the usual place, the strip being at tached to the iron frame 1', the principal feature of the invention being thebox orcanopy e, attached to or forming part of the pianocasing, for collecting and distributing the sound-waves from the vibratory strings, a curved sonndboardf being fitted in the box or canopy e for directing the sound through the door h and through between the (lentils j or other openings in the canopy.
The box or canopy e is shown as overhanging the front of the piano, but it may be flush with the front, if so desired.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of a piano-case, provided with a sound-concentrating chamber at the top thereof, a frame arranged in the said case, a wrest-plank connected to the upper end of said frame, a curvilinear vibratory soundboard connected at one end to said plank and extending outwardly into said chamber for projecting the sound therefrom, and a hinged door for said chamber capable of variable inclination for directing the projected sound in any given direction.
' In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLIFFORD ROBERT STEPHEN JOHN HALLE.
