CHARLES S. HALL, OF INEWABK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOJR TO THE WHITEHEAD 2; HOAG ('30., OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BANK.
Application filed May as,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CI-IARLns S. HALL, of Newark, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Banks, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and
exact description,
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in banks and pertains particularly to savings banks of the small portable type adapted to be carried in the individuals pocket and into which coins may readily be inserted and be withdrawn therefrom only upon opening the bank by the use of suitable key in the hands of someone familiar with the locking mechanism, this type of bank being commonly used by savings banks institutions for distribution among its customers as an advertising novelty.
The general object of the invention is to produce a savings bank of small size and of relatively simple and inexpensive construetion and which will be highly eflicient for the purpose designed.
Spec-ific objects and advantages relate to and reside in the details of construction of the bank, with particular reference to the mechanism for removably locking the separable parts together, all of which will more fully appear from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings .in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bank of this invention. a
Figure 2 is a horizontal cross section of the same showing the separable parts locked together.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure showing the separable parts unlocked.
Figure 4t is a cross section on line 4-4, Fig. 2.
Figure Fig. 2.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of key adapted for use in connection-with the bank.
The invention as shown comprises a substantially cylindrical side-wall -1 having its upper edge formed with an enlarged part or parts -2+ for retaining a cap ring 3, which ring is adapted in turn to be in- 5 is a cross section on line 5--5,
terlocked with and retained by a flanged 1919. Serial No. 300,373.
cap land preferably as shown the cap is provided with a covering -5 of suitable material as celluloid or the like for receiving or displaying advertising or other matter and in the specific illustration the edge of the celluloid sheet -5- is wrapped about the flanged edge of cap -land is confined between the said flanged edge -6 and the cap ring 3-. The parts so far described are in the manner shown permanently secured together and constitute an inverted cup shaped structure.
The lower edge of the side wall lis provided with an inturned circumferential flange -7- formed. with a series of open-. ings -8, in this particular illustration four equally spaced openings being shown, to permit the passage of four equally spaced lugs 9- struck up from a base cap 10 having its marginal portion formed with a flange 11- adapted for securement to a base ring -12- having an internal diameter substantially equal to the external diameter of the body -1- so as to freely slide thereover in assembling and disassemblin the base cap and the body of the bank. Treferably this base cap in like manner as the cap --4 is provided with a covering of suitable mate-rial such as celluloid or the like for receiving or displaying advertising or other matterand as illustrated the edge of the celluloid sheet --13 is wrapped about the flange -lland is confined between said flange and the base ring --12. The base cap -10, the base ring 12- and the celluloid sheet -18- constitute a permanently as sociated structure.
The lugs --9- preferably comprise a vertical portion --1 l of a length somewhat greater than the thickness of the flange 7 and a horizontal portion -'l5- of a length substantially equal to the radial width of slots 8- and for the purpose of locking the base cap 10-- to the flange 8- a rotatable annular ring or wheel -16- is provided preferably permanently secured to the flange 7- in a manner to permit relative rotary movement of the parts and this may be effected by forming the flange --7- with a circumferential head --17- bent around the inner edge of the wheel 16. The wheel 16 has its periphery formed with step portions, there being preferably three steps corresponding to each lug 9-. The inner step 18 when aligned with an opening 8 permitting free passage of the dig? iliil lug 9 through said opening. The second step 19- extending some distance radially and outwardly from the periphery of step l8- so as to partially close an opening 8- when in registration therewith and of a thickness to freely slide be-' neat-l1 the horizontal portion 15- of a lug -9- to lock the lug againstremoval through the said opening. The third step 20 extends still farther radially and outwardly than the step 19- and constitutes a limiting stop when brought into contact with a lug -9 to prevent further revolution of wheel l'6 The operation of assembling the device will be readily understood. \Vhen the parts are separated, the-step *l8 should lie adjacent the opening 8 so as not to obstruct the said opening. Respective lugs -9- may then be passed through openings 8 and the wheel 1'6 rotated to bring the projections or steps 19 beneath respective lugs 9 to lock the lugs against removal through said openings. The unlocking of the parts is effected by a reverse rotation of wheel or locking ring -l6. For the purpose of facilitating this locking and unlocking process the wheel 1(3 is provided with a peripheral'recess 21 of a size adapted to receive a projection -22 upon a key Q3'-. The end part -2-iof the key may be passed through the coin slot -25- and the flange 22 brought into the recess 2l and by movement of the handle of the key proper rotary movement of the wheel may be e'fl'ected to either lock or unlock the separable parts. Preferably the coin slot 25-' is normally covered by flexible curtain 26 which may be supported in any suitable manner as by frictional 'engagement'loetween the body 'l and flange -27 formed thereon and re versely bent to contact with the inner wall of the curtain.
Although I have described the complete bank structure en'lbodying specific details of form, shape and arrangement, I do not desire to limit myself to the same, as the features 01 this invention relate to the mechanism for securing the separable parts together and said mechanism may be utilized in connection with various and modified structures and may itself be varied and modified in details without departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth in the appended claims.
