One of the. essential characteristic teatures of -'-the improved construction which constitutes an improvement applicableto all the constructional forms described in my above-mentioned application, consists in the peculiar arrangement of a device for balancing the rocking mass, and in the manner of its connection to the carriage head, said connection being made in such a manner as to facilitate the longitudinal uprighting of the combined saddle H and gun pedestal by rocking around the axle 0 The device for balancing the rocking mass around the cradle trunnions s, in the elevating of the gun, comprises two cylinders K pivoted to the said cradle by means of trunnions k and in each of which a piston K is adapted to move.
A spring L is coiled around the rod K of this piston. This spring bears at one end against the piston, and at its other end against one of the ends of the cylinder K.
When the'cradle and the gun barrel are in their horizontal position, the spring L is pressed and kept stressed by the fact that the free end 74 of the piston rod K is attached to the carriage head by means of a cable or metal band M fastened at one end m at c whilst its other end 'm is attached to a cross beam N which is fulcrumed at its centre by means of a stud n in the carriage head C.
The cable or band M is guided by a pulley 0 movable around an axle pin 0 carried by the gun pedestal G. In order that the pull upon the rod K shall act always along the axis of this rod, the cable or band M before passing over the guiding pulley 0 passes under a boss G projecting from the gun pedestal G.
hen the parts are in the positions indicated in the figure, that is to say, when the cradle is horizontal the effort that tends to cause the oscillating mass to turn downwards by rocking on the trunnions a, is balanced approximately by the tension of the spring L which has a tendency to cause the mass to rock in the opposite direction with a leverage equal to the distance between the piston rod and the axis of the gun cradle trunnions. The result is that the displacement of the elevating sector R over the pinion G can be effected without the necessity of exerting any considerable force.
At the same time, the illustrated apparatus allows of balancing the mass that rocks around the axis 0 for the uprighting movements of the combined gun pedestal G and the saddle H, which allows of producing without any appreciable exertion of force, adisplacement of the sectors it over the pinions C As a matter of fact the pivotal movement of the combined gun barrel, gun cradle. gun pedestal and saddle H around the axle (2 has a constant tendency to take place with an efl ort represented by the product of the weight of the oscillating mass multiplied by a leverage equal to the distance between the vertical line passing through the centre of gravity of the said mass and the axis 0 In the uprighting movements, this effort is approximately balanced by the action of the balancer. It is for this purpose that the piston rod K is coupled to a band which, instead out being attached directly to the carriage head, passes over a guide pully carried by the gun pedestal. .Moreover, the coupling of the piston rod, as above stated, is effected by means of bands attached to the ends of the cross barN pivoted on the gun carriage head; this allows of a suitable action of the balancer irrespective of the training positions.
I claim:
l. A double-trailed wheeled gun mounting comprising a gun carriage head, a saddle pivotally mounted in said carriage head, a pedestal pivotally mounted on said saddle, a pivotal axle supporting said saddle in said carriage head, said axle constituting the axis around which the saddle and pedestal oscillates, the ends of said axle projecting externally from the carriage head to form two spherical joint elements for the articulation of the trails thereto.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gun carriage head, a saddle pivotally mounted in said carriage head, a pedestal pivotally mounted in said saddle, a balancer adapted to facilitate the longitudinal uprighting of said saddle and pedestal, said balancer comprising one or more cylinders articulated to a gun cradle, a piston and piston rod in said cylinder, means for resisting movement of said piston, and a member connected at one end to said piston rod and at its opposite end to a crossbeam pivoted in said carriage head.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gun carriage head, a gun saddle, an axle supporting said saddle in said carriage head. a gun pedestal supported by said saddle, and a balancer adapted to facilitate the longitudinal uprighting of said saddle and pedestal.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a carriage head, a gun saddle, an axle suporting said saddle in said carriage head, a gun pedestal supported by said saddle, a pair of trails having ball and socket connection with said axle, and a balancer adapted to facilitate the longitudinal uprighting of said saddle and pedestal.
In a device of the class described, the combination of a carriage head. a gun saddle, an axle supporting said saddle in said carriage head, a pedestal supported by said :ldle. a gun cradle carried by said pedestal, and a balancer secured to said cradle and carriage.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a gun carriage head, a gun saddle, an axle supporting said saddle in said carriage head, a gun pedestal supported by said saddle, a gun cradle carried by said pedestal, elevating mechanism for said cradle, and means whereby the actuation of said elevating mechanism is facilitated.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination of a carriage head, a gun saddle, an axle supporting said saddle in said carriage head, a gun pedestal supported by said saddle, training mechanism for said pedestal, and a balancer for the saddle and pedestal, said balancer being adapted to operate in all the training positions of the pedestal.
8. In a wheeled-axle gun mount, a carriage head mounted on the axle, means for moving said head about an axis at right angles to said axle, gun supporting means mounted in said carriage head, and a balanoer whereby the longitudinal uprighting of said gun supporting means is facilitated.
9. In .a device of the class described, a gun carriage head, an axle carried by said carriage head, and gun supporting means carried by said axle, the ends of the axle projecting externally from the carriage head to form spherical joint elements for the articulation of trails thereto.
