WILLIAM SEIDEL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATCH BOARD.
Application filed August 16, 1920. Serial No. 403,708.
To aZZ whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, YVILLIAM Semen a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Match Boards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a match board for use with a molders flask, and is particularly concerned with means for centering the board upon flasks of different sizes. An exemplification of this invention in its preferred form is shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a flask with match board secured thereto;
Fig. 2 is a detail in plan of the means for centering the board upon the flask; and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
The present board is adapted for use with a flask of ordinary construction having sides 5 and ends 6. In the center of each end is secured a base plate? on which is carried a post or pin 8 which extends beyond the flask edge, as shown. Preferably this post is triangular in cross section, presenting its base against the flask end.
The match board, designated as 10, is provided on each of its ends with a casting 11 formed to provide a guideway in which is a. slot 12 extending lengthwise of the board. Webs 13 on each side of the slot constitute guides for a slidable block which preferably consists of a pair of plates 15 and 16, the latter having a flange 17 in the form of a V in overlapping relation to the front face of the plate 15 which is suitably recessed for this purpose. These two plates may be connected as by means of screws 18 which, when tightened, serve to clamp the block upon the webs 13. According to this construction the block may be shifted within the guideway to be therein tightened in any given position of adjustment so as to present the V flange 17 adjacent the corresponding faces of the post 8. In this manner the match board is uniformly centered upon the flask.
The adjustments of the block should be determined with reference to the length of the flask and the consequent distance between the two posts 8. According to the construc tion described, the two blocks in the match.
board may be shifted to the required position to always insure uniform centering of the match boards upon flasks of different length, and this is accomplished regardless of which face of the board is turned toward the fiasln v The castings 11 may be secured to the ends of the match board in any desired manner, and as one suggestive way of doing this I have shown in the drawing a tongue 20 disposed within a recessed portion of the board end, fins 21 projecting beyond each end of the tongue. Edge plates 22 may be secured adjacent the board ends, one upon each face thereof, and secured to the board as by means of pins or rivets 23, which are also entered through the plate tongue 20 and fins 21. By arranging the edge plates 22 in flush relation with the board, as shown, a. neat and substantial construction is provided.
According to this invention, the centering of the match board is accomplished by means which are inexpensive to construct, easy to adjust, and certain in their results. Not only is the centering assured in a longitudinal direction, but in a transverse direction as well, owing to the V-formation of the parts and block flanges which serve to shift the board laterally as required for exact centering upon the flask.
I claim:
1. The combination withv a flask provided with a centering post, of a match. board adapted for positioning thereon and provided with means extended beyond one of its ends, for co-operating with the post, said means including a member within which is formed a guideway, a block comprising a pair of overlapping plates having screw means connecting them adapted to slide within the guideway and to be locked therein in any given position of adjustment when the screw means are tightened, the block being formed to co-oper-ate with the post to center the board upon the flask, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a flask provided with a centering post, of a match board adapted for positioning thereon and provided with means extended beyond one of its ends for co-operating with the post, said means including a member within which is formed a guideway, a block comprising a pair of overlapping plates occupying p0sitions on opposite sides of the guideway, and screw means connectin the plates, the latter bein adapted to shde Within the guide- Way 21113 clampingly engage therewith in any given position of adjustment when the screw means is tightened, the block being formed to eo-operete with the post to center the beard upon the flask, substantially as descnbed.
