Be it known that l, Sinnen' S. Jnciisoiv, a subject or' Great Britain, residing at Hyde Park, Boston, in the county of Sutlolk. State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Filling- Feeler Mechanisms tor Looms, ot which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention has relation to the so-called iilling-feeler mechanisms which are einployed in looms for the purpose ot detecting when the shuttle-contained supply ot weft or filling has become depleted to the predetermined extent, and thereupon bringout about action to forestall the delivery of the last end of the said supply troni the shuttle and thereby avoid the production oit a short pick in the cloth being woven, which would render the cloth defective.
A lilling-eeler mechanism comprises, ordinarily, a weft or filling-fee-ler, vand in conjunction therewith devices which under the governance of the lilling-tecler are instrumental in bringing about the action tor which provision is made (in some cases antoniatic replenishment of the weft-supply; inv
others, stoppage of the loom), and a so-called controller located intermediate the fillingiteeler and the said devices, itself governed by the tilling-feeler, and in turn controlling the said devices.
The invention is applicable to lillingfeeler mechanisms of the class provided with side-slipping eeler devices, i. 'teeler devices characterized by a laterally-niovable teeler member whiclrat the time of each successive feeling action is held trom lateral movement, that is to say is held from movement longitudinally ot the weft or fillingcarrier occupying the shuttle, by engagement of the shuttle contained supply of wett or filling therewith, until the remaining portion of the said supply is too small to prevent such movement, at which stage in the depletion ot the supply the laterallymovable 'eeler member is displaced in the direction of the length of the shuttle-contained weft or filling-carrier and as a result oi such displacement the change is called. The general class of side-slipping feeler devices comprises two types of such devices, to either of which. the present invention ,is applicable. These two types are,

first, the 'ype in which the tendency of the teeler member to move laterally results itrom torwardly-directed contact-pressure acting against a laterally oiiset feeling end or tipg.
and second, the type in which the tendency of the eeler member to move laterally is due to the application oi" the yielding torce of a spring or other convenient means at the time ot' the feeling action.
The general object of the invention is to provide improved means for operatively combining a side-slipping feeler device with a rocking controller having a roclshaift mounted in suitable bearings and extending in a transverse direction from the outboard position which the iilling-feeler is require-d to occupy to the inboard position ot' the devices through which the change is called, with the outer end of said rockshai't opera-- tively related with the illing-feeler and the inner end thereof operatively related with the said devices.
The invention consists, essentially, in a. i'illing-feeler mechanism having, intermediate a side-slipping teeler member and a rocking` controller constituting elements ot such mechanism, a combining member, prete-rably a lever, which is in lateral engagement with the teoler member, along which the teelcr member slides in the forward and rearward reciprocating movement thereci2 which takes place in the feeling action.v and which, when the feeler member slips sidewise, is actuated by the laterally-moving teeler member to bring about rocking ot the controller and thereby the calling ot' a change.
The drawings show illustrative embodiments of the invention in feeler-mechanisins having side-slipping eeler devices of the type iirst mentioned. rlhe application oit the features of the invention in connection with feeler devices of the second type referred to will be obvious to those skilled in the art.

When, however, the teeler member slips sidewise in a feeling action, it operates in its lateral swinging movement to actuate the lever by swinging the latter around the pivot thereof, and by reason ot the engagement of the lever with the arm or finger 25 of the controller-rockshaitt brings about a rocking of the controller about the axis ot' said roclsha'ft', causing` the latch or dog 18 to be engaged and actuated by the Weitfhammer or goosenech to call the change.
The form, construction, and relative disposition ot the intermediate lever and the parts with which it is associated vary in minor respects in the ditlerent mechanisms which are shown in the drawings` and mav vary otherwise in practice. ln the case ot the feeler-mechanism of Figs. l. to the. rearwardly extending arm vof the lever 2l engages withthe inner side of an zA :m or crank 9a of the teeler member, projecting' forward from the pivot l0. The tension of the controller-spring 22, acting through the lever 26, operates to press the said arm or crank 9a toward a stop 30 on carrier 8, thereby turning the ieeler member around ysaid pivot l() into the normal presentation position shown in Fig. l, which is determined by the contact of the arm or crank 9F with the said stop. The lever-arm which engages laterally with the arm or crank has a contacting surface ez'itending parallel with the path ot movementof `the teeler--carrier 8, so that as the teeler device reciprocates the lateral pressure ot the lever against the itecler member is maintained, and the position of the lever remains imclianged until in a feeling action tne teeler member slips sidewise and by turning around its pivot actuates the lever to turn the contr llerroclshatt and call the change. ln the case ot the feeler-mechanisms of Figs. to the rearwaidly-extending arm of the l r 2 makes contact with the straight outer side oi a portion of the teeler member which extends rearward from the pivot l() ot the feeler member. ln a feeling action. the said straight side slides past the contacting portion of the lever-arm. Fig. el shows the teeler member provided with a contactscrew 3l for engagement with stop 3tlg ou thev carrier 8. By adjustment ot the said screw the contact-portion or tip li may he caused to stand at a greater or less distan-ce to one side ot pivot l0, in the waiting or presenta-tion position of the lieeler device, and thus by varying the exte t to which the contact-portion or tip is otlsct laterally relative to the pivot of the teeler member the sensitiveness of the device in feeling may be regulated.
As will be perceived, the controller spring 22 or lt normally acts throughthe controllerroclshatt and the intermediate lever to keep the eeler member turned sidewise into its normal presentation position determined by the stop 30 or 30, and conversely.' the member, when it slips sidewise, acts through the lever to rock the controller against the resistance of the said spring. so as thereby to call the change.
What is claimed as the invention ifs,-
1. In iilling-feeler mechanism of the sideslipping class, the combination with devices for bringing about a cliangre, including a latch or dog, of a controller-roclrshatt. connecting means intermediate said controllerroclshaft and said .latch or dog, and a side,- slipping feeler member which has a torward and rearward movement during the feeling action, oit an intermediate member in lateral engagement with the teeler member and also operatively combinec with the controller-roclrshaft and along which the feeler member slides in the said movement. and which is actuated when the teeler member slips sidewise, to bring` about i ching of the controller rockshatt around its axis and thereby the calling` of a change.
2. The combination with devices for calling a change7 including a latch or dogg. a rocking controller in operative enejapjeinent with the said latch or dog, means whereby said controller is yieldingly act ted to maintain said latch. or dog in inoperative relations, and a side-slipping eeler member which has a forward and rearward movement during the feeling action, of a member operatively combined with the controller and also in lateral engagement with the ieeler member, along which the latter slides in the said movement and through which the eeler-melnber, when it slips sidewise, acts to bring about rocking of the controller and thereby the calling` of a. change.
3. The combination with devices i'or calling a change, including a latch or dog, a rocking controller in operative engagement with the said latch or dog, yieldingly actu ated to maintain said latch or dog in inoperative relations, and a side-slipping `leeler member which has a -forward and rearward movement during the feeling action. ot a lever operatively combined with the said controller and also in lateral engagementV with the eeler member, along which the latter slides in the said movement and through which the eeler member, when it slips sidewise, acts to bring about ron-.king oit the controller and thereby the falling oi a chauffe.

5. VVet or illing-feeler mechanism comprising a spring-controlled carrier-member, a side-slipping ieeler member pivoted thereon and having an engaging portion, a spring-tensioned rocking controller for the devices through which a change is called, said rocking controller having an arm or finger, and a lever having one arm engaged with the said arm or finger and a second arm laterally engaged with the engaging portion 'of the ir'eeler member and along which the said portion slides in the reciprocating movements ot the carrier, the said lever actuated by the eeler member in the side-slipping movement of the latter to rock the controller to call the change.
6. In illing-feeler mechanism for looms, the combination with a eeler-member hav- `ing a side-slipping movement in case of weft-delicinecy, and a latch or dog pertaining to devices for bringing about a change, of a controller-rockshaft intermediate said feeler-member and said latch or dog, connecting means through which the said roel@ shaift controls the said latch or dog, and a member with whicl'i the eeler-member is in lateral sliding engagement, actuated by sidewise detecting movement ofthe eelermember, and when thus actuated rocking the roclrshatt Ato cause the said connecting means place the latch or dog in position for engagement with its actuator.
