for looms, and more particularly to that type of feeler mechanisms wherein the feeler is given a movement longitudinally of the shuttle when. the filling is substantially exhausted. One of the objects of'the present invention is to provide a feeler mechanism of'the type wherein the feeler is given a movement longitudinallyof the shuttle when the filling is substantially exhausted, which shall be'simple in construction, effective and sensitive in operation. ;To these ends, an
important feature of the present invention consists in a feeler which is mounted upon a filling carrier for bodily movement relative thereto in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle when the filling is substantially exhausted. To insure the bodily movement of the feeler under the conditions-stated, the
present invention further contemplates the provision of a feeler relieving member which, after the feeler has engaged the surface within the shuttle, is met by a surface on the lay to relieve the pressure against the feeler incident to movement of the feeler carrier frontwardly on a detecting beat.
Another feature of the invention consists in a feeler having a movement toward and from the front of-the loom relative to the carrier, and a bodily movement on the carrier in a direction longitudinally of the shutcam means for returning the feeler bodily to its feeling'position as the 'lay retreats," '1

Extending frontwardly from the feeler carrier 22 is the rod or. stem 23 which passes through a lug 24 carried by an arm 25 extending frontwardly from the feeler stand, and a spring 26 interposed between the carrier 22 and the lug 24 acts normally to move the carrier 22 or hold it in its rearward position as indicated in Fig. 1, wherein a stop 27, shown as a pin in the present instance, extending upwardly from the feeler stand, serves to limit the rearward movement of the feeler carrier. Suitable means in addition to the rod or stem 23 may be employed to guide the feeler carrier 22 in its movements. In the present instance, the carrieris shown as slotted at 28, and a lug 29 extending upwardly from the feeler stand 21 passes through the slot 28 and has a widened upper end whereby the feeler carrier 22 may be directed in its movement toward and from the front of the loom.
As hereinbefore noted, the feeler in the present instance, is connected to the feeler carrier for bodily movement in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle, and is held from such bodily movement by engagement with the filling until substantial exhaustion thereof. As one good practical form of means for effecting this characteristic operation of the feeler in the present invention,
the carrier 22 is provided with laterallyextending openings at its front and rear portions as at 30 and 31 into which extend the guide pins 32 and 33 respectively. The
guide pins 32 and 33 are carried by a cam member 34 which is provided with the cams 35 and 36 which are adapted to be engaged by ins 37 and 27 as the feeler carrier and perforce the cam member 34 move rearwardly into positions indicated in Fig. 1.
A spring 38 connected at one end to the pin 39 on the feeler carrier and at its other'end to a pin 40 on the cam member 34, serves normally to movethe cam member 34 bodily in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle, the movement of the cam member being guided by the pins 32 and 33 hereinbefore described.
The cam member 34 has'a lug 41 at its front portion through which extends the rod or stem 42 of a feeler 43, the rear portion 44 of which is roughened or'provided with teeth. The cam member-34, in the present instance of the invention, is extended rearwardly and provided with a guide pin 45 which extends into a slot 46 formed in the or of only sufficient tension to insure that the Y :teeth or roughened portion 44 of the feeler when engaged by the filling shall sink into the filling, so that bodily movement of the feeler longitudinally of the shuttle may be prevented by the filling when a working supply of filling is present in the shuttle on a detecting beat. The spring47 bears at one end against the lug 41 and at its other end against a shoulder 48 formed on the feeler, the construction being such that the feeler 43 while mounted on the feeler carrier through the medium, in the present instance, of the cam member 34, is yet capable of some movement toward and from the front of the loom independent of the movement of the feeler carrier and under the impulse ofthe light spring 47 or the pressure of the'filling or surface within the shuttle against the end of the feeler.
To prevent injury to the filling by the constantly recurring impact aginst the. toothed end of the feeler, and at the same time to relieve the feeler from undue pressure of the surface within the shuttle engaged by it, the present invention provides a feeler relieving member which is connected to the feeler carrier and serves by engagement with a surface on'the lay to move the feeler carrier frontwardly against the push of the spring- 26. In the present instance of the invention, the feeler relieving member consists of a finger 49 secured to the feeler carrier 22 and provided with a slotted rear portion 50 which embraces the rear end portion of the feeler 43, as best indicated by Fig. 4. Should a" working supply of filling be present in the shuttle on a detecting beat, as
indicated in Fig. 2, the toothed end portion 44 of the feeler will engage the filling and sink "into it sufiiciently to prevent bodilymovement of the feeler 43 in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle under theimpulse ,of'the spring 38 as the feeler carrier and cammember' 34 are moved frontwardly by the frontwardpush of the surface on the lay againstthe feeler relieving. member 49. This bodily movement of the feeler longi tudinally of the shuttle on a detectingbeat, indicates that the filling is substantially exhausted, and that replenishment of filling should be effected. To do this, the present invention utilizes this bodily movement of the feeler longitudinally of the shuttle to set in action a train of mechanism'for effecting replenishment of filling. In the presentinstance of the invention, the feeler stand has pivotally mounted thereon at 53 a lever 54; adapted to be moved about its pivotal mounting by the bodily side movement of the feeler under the push of one of the guide pins such as 33 (Fig. 3). The lever 54 is connected to the transmitter 55, the opposite end of which is connected at 56 to a lever 57 pivoted at 58 to a stand 59 rising from the loom frame. The lever 57 has an arm or finger 60 which underlies the latch 6, the construction being such that when the feeler is moved bodily in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle on a detecting beat, the lever 54 will be moved'from the position indicated in Fig. 2 to that of Fig. 3, thereby actuating the lever 57 to lift the latch 6 and place its end 7 in the pathof movement of the operating member 8, which on its frontward movement effects a rocking action of the transing by the usual filling replenishing mechanism which is not herein shown.

In a feeler mechanism for looms, a feeler carrier mounted independently of the lay for movement toward and from the front of the loom on each detecting beat, a feeler mounted on the carrier for movement therewith and for bodily movement relative thereto in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle and held from such movement by the filling on a detecting beat until substantial exhaustion thereof, afeeler relieving member connected to the carrier for effecting frcntward movement thereof by the frontward push of a surface on. the lay on each detectingbeat, and cam means operable upon movement of the carrier rearwardly to impart later movement to the feeler.

In a feeler mechanism for looms, the combination of a feeler carrier mounted independently of the lay, a feeler connected to the carrier for frontward movement therewith and yielding frontward movement relative thereto, and also for bodily movement relative to the carrier in a direction longitudinally of the shuttle, a feeler relieving member connected to the carrier and effecting frontward movement thereof by the push upon the relieving member following engagement of the feeler with the surface within the shuttle, and means for moving the feeler longitudinally of the shuttle when it is detects substantial exhaustion of filling.

In a feeler mechanism for looms, the combination of a feeler mounted independently of the lay for bodily sliding movement longitudinally of the shuttle but held from such bodily movement by the filling until substantial exhaustion thereof and movable toward andfrom the front of the loom on eachdetecting beat, a feeler relieving member adapted to *be moved frontwardly by a surface within the shuttle after the feeler has engaged the said surface, and connections between the feeler' and the feeler relieving member foreffecting front a light spring for yieldingly holding the feeler with its rear end extending beyond the rear end of the-feeler relieving member, and connections between thefeeler and the feeler relieving member for effecting frontward movement of the former by the latter on each detecting beat; a v V "11.
