To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs E. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Methuen, cgunty of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Filling-Detectors for Looms, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the draw-v loom, and upon the occurrence of substantial exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, setting into operation mechanism for effecting replenishment of the filling supply. In some types, the detecting means has consisted of two members, one an impinging member to contact with means, such as the vfilling in the shuttle, and the other a penetrating member to sink into the filling'on each detecting beat-up movement of the lay, and upon the occurrence of substantial exhaustion of filling, these members have co- `operated to initiate filling replenishment.
Mechanism of this type is shown and described in the patent to C. F. Roper, No. 821,123., .dated May 22, 1906, which has in a large measure worked satisfactorily.
In detector mechanisms comprising a'n impin-ging member and a penetrating member,' it is desirable that there should be capacity for relative adjustment of the two members toward and from the lay in order to determine the most advantageous degree of penetration of the penetrating member with respect to the particular yarn or filling on the bobbin or carrier in the shuttle, and this has been suggested in the patent mentioned. lVhere the impinging member extends for some distance longitudinally of the bobbin axis and consequently impinges upon the filling at different points longitudinally `of the'. lling mass, it is 'desirable that the impinging and penetrating members be not only relatively adjustable in a direction toward and from the lay to regulate the degree of penetration of the penetrating member, but that thc 'impinging member be adjustable in a direction angularly to the bobbin axis or with relation to the penetrating member in order that a substantially flush bearing be secured between the filling mass and the full length of the impinging member.
An important feature of the present invention, therefore, consists in providing a filling detector of the impinging and penetrating type, with means for relatively adj usting the two members angularly .and bodily toward and from the lay. Where such angular adjustment is made by the impinging member, it is liable to disturb the relation of the two members which determines the degree of penetrability of the penetrating member, and the present invention, therefore, further provides that the im# pinging member be adjustable both angularly and rectilinearly with respect to the penetrating member.
As well understood by those familiar with 1 those devices, the detecting action and initiation of filling replenishment must be efectedin a very `small fraction of time during the detecting beat of the lay; therefore,sim plicity of construction and operation conduce to a more accurate accomplishment of the desired end.
Another important feature of the invention, therefore, consists in operatively positioning the means for .initiating replenishment .by simple and positive means, which, in the embodiment of the invention here illustrated, comprises a rocker which may be turned upon its axis through a small arc when the penetrating member strikes the more dense "substance of the filling carrier or bobbin.
Otherv features of theinvention will be hereinafter described in connection with the illustrated embodiment of the invention, and then definitely set forth in the claims.
In the drawings Figure l is a plan view of the filling detector, showing the action of the impinging and penetrating members when aworking'supply of lilling is-present in the shuttle;'Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2, Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a plan view similar to that of Fig. 1, showing the position of parts on the beat-up movement when the filling is substantially exhausted; and Fig. 4 is a section on the lined-Jl, Fig. 3.
The detecting mechanism of the present invention-is adapted for application to a s0- called filling replenishing or automatic loom, wherein upon substantial exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, means are set in operative condition to eiect replenishment of the filling. The replenishing mechanism and its general characteristics and operations, as well as the parts for initiating its operation, under the command of the detecting mechanism, are Well understood by those skilled in the art, and detailed explanation thereof 1s unnecessary.
The shuttle S is provided with an opening 2 in its side wall, and the shuttle-box A has its front wall 3 provided with an opening 4, the said openings in the' wall of the shuttle and shuttle-box being adapted to register when the shuttle is properly positioned in said box for the action of the detector mechanism. These features also are common and well understood.
The illing detector comprisesa stand 5 which may be properly secured to a suitable portion of the loom frame in which the deteptor is to be used by the means such asfthe screws 6, and is provided with bearing portions 7 and 8 in which .is mounted the eeler carrier 9 and its forwardly-projecting stem 10, said stem being under the control of a suitable spring 11 normally tending to orce fthe feeler carrier rearwardly or toward the lay. In the present instance of the invention the feeler is, shown as a slide and the spring 11 surrounds the stem 10 and at one vend is seated against the bearing 7 and at the other endagainst an enlarged portion of the feeler slide, substantially as usual in this such impinging member class of devices, and as clearly indicated in Figs. 1 and 2.
The term feeler slide is herein employed in its broad sense as a part for carrying the ,feeler members and movable toward and from the front of the loom.
The feeler slide 9 has at its rear portion, an impinging member 12, which, when the shuttle is in the box at the detecting side ot the loom, is adapted to enter and contact with the filling or filling carrier in the shuttle. The impinging member 12 is adjustably mounted to the head portion 13 of the feeler slide 9, both for angular and rectilinear movement with respect to the slide. In the present form of the invention, this adjustment is secured by means of a screw 14 which passes through an elongated opening 15 in the impin'ging member 12, whereby may be adjusted bodily or rectilinearly with respect to the feeler slide head 13. The eeler. slide head 13 is preferably provided with a seat to receive the impinging member 12, there beinging member to be angularly adjusted in order to bring its impinging edge 17 into ing memes proper relation with the axis of the bobbin' or the filling mass wound thereon. l
Extending through the head 13 of the feeler slide, is the penetrating member 18, the penetrating end portion of which also extends through a suitable opening at one end portion of the impinging member, substantially as indicated at 19, Fig. 1. In order that the penetrating member may be limited in its movement relative to the impinging member or the head 13, a pin 20 passes through the head 13 and an elongated slot in the penetrating member,y substantially as indicated in Fig. 3.
From the construction thus far described, it will be apparent that the impinging member 12 may be adjusted rectilinearly with respect to the feeler carrier or vslide to relatively position the impinging edge portion 17/ of the impinging member and the penetrating portion of the penetrating member; and likewise the impinging member 12 may be angularly adjusted to bring its impinging edge portion 17 into substantial parallel relation with the axis of the bobbin or with the filling mass wound thereon, so that such impinging member may contact with the lling mass, substantially throughout the extent of its impinging edge portion.
Rising from the head 13 of the eeler slide is the' lug 21 in which is mounted the stud 22 on which the finger 23 is pivotally mounted. The free end portion 24 of the finger 23 is provided with a notch which is adapted at times to engage a controller 25 for initiat-v lling replenishment when such eeler 23 is moved toward the front of the loom while engaged with the controller.
In order to control the operative or inoperative position of the finger 23 with' re- 105 spect to the controller, the present invention contemplates a rocker mounted independently of the finger and normally under the influence of means for holding the penetrating member of the detector in projected po- 110 sition, and operative connections are provided between such rocker and finger 23 to control the position of the finger.
In the present embodiment of the invention, the rocker comprises a part 26 piv- 11i otally mounted at 27 tothe eeler slide and normally under the control of a spring 27x disposed between one end of the rocker 26 and a shoulder 28 of the feeler slide. Oppositethe spring 27)c the rocker 26 bears 120 upon the end 29 of the penetrat'ng member of the detector, and normally seiLves to hold 'such penetrating member in projected position with respect to the impinging member.
Extending upwardly from the rocker 26 at 125 the 4opposite side of its pivotal mounting 27 is a projection 30Yadapted to engage a lug 31 extending downward from' the finger 23, the construction being such that when the rocker 26 is in normal position, as indicated I13e rontward on the beat-up movement of the lay, the penetrating member turns the rocker 26 upon its pivotal mounting 27 and perforce, turns the finger 23 to bring its bi.- furcated end portion 24 into position to engage the controller 25 when the detector or feeler slide is moved toward the front of the loom.
The nger 23 has a rearwardly extending lug portion 32 through which extends an adjusting screw 33, the end portion of which is adapted to contact with the top portion of the feeler head, when the bifurcated end 24 of the finger 23 is'in inoperative relation with the controller 25, substantially as indicated in Fig. 2.
From the construction described, it will be apparent that the rocker 26 is mounted independently 'of the finger 23, and by turning movement thereof -due to the penetrating member of the detector engaging the dense substance of the filling carrier or bobbin, such rocker is turned upon its axis to thereby position the finger 23 operatively and initiate filling replenishment upon the forward movement of the detector.
The construction is simple and effective, and the parts so related that within a small space of time allowed for the action of the detector, upon substantial exhaustion of filling, the parts may assume the desired relation for initiating filling replenishment.
lVhat is claimed is 1. A filling detector for filling replenishing looms, having, in combination, an impinging member and a penetrating member, a. finger for initiating filling replenishment, a rocker for controlling the finger, said finger and rocker being independently mounted for pivotal movement in planes substantially at right angles to each other, and yielding means acting through the rocker to normally project the penetrating member and permitting said member to turn the rocker on its pivotal mounting to position the finger when the filling becomes practically exhausted.
2. A filling detector for filling replenishing looms, comprising, in combination, an impinging member, a finger for initiating filling replenishment mounted to swing to and from operative position,-' a rocker mounted independently of the finger and controlling the position thereof, a spring normally acting to hold the rocker in a predetermined position, and apenetrating mem- Vber adapted to turn the rocker when the impinging and penetrating members are relatively moved to change the position of the finger. impinging member, a finger for initiating Y filling replenishment mounted to swing to and from operative position, a rocker mounted independently of the finger and controlling the position thereof, a spring normally acting to hold the rocker in a predetermined position, a penetrating member adapted to turn the lrocker when the impinging and penetrating members are relatively moved to change the position of the finger, and means for adjusting the amount of relative movement of the impinging and penetrating members.
4. A filling detector for looms, having in combination, a feeler slide provided with an impinging member, means for adjusting the position of the impinging member relative to the slide, a finger and a rocker independently mounted on the feeler slide, connections between the finger and rocker for moving the former by the latter, a penetrating member, and a spring acting through the rocker for normally projecting the penetrating member and holding the rocker in a predetermined rotative positionl and yielding upon relative movement of the impinging and penetrating members to change the position of the finger.

A lling detector for filling replenishing looms, comprising two eeler members, one of which has a filling engaging portion extending longitudinally of the illing mass, means for angularly adjusting said member to conform the filling engaging portion thereof to the shape of the illing mass and meegyae rectilinearly adjusting said member to maintain the desired relation between the two feeler members, and means actuated by said feeler members when the filling is substantially exhausted to initiate filling replenishment.
