Application led August 8, 1921. Serial No. 490,582.
To all whom t may concern: y
Be it known thatl, FRED WILLIS GUNN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk andState of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful- Improvements in Hose- Clamping Tools, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for manipulating and applying bands or wires, and while having other and more general ields of usefulness, is well adapted and designed for applying clamping bands or wires to hose or like flexible tubes for clamping and securing the same to pipes, nozzles, couplings and the like.
A principal object'of the invention is to provide a simple and easily operated tool that is'adapted lto first draw up a clamping band or wire tightly around the hose, and then to sever it, ,leaving a proper length of the wire end projecting and substantially bent back so that the clamp is secure as the tool is removed. A further object is to pro, vide a tool of the kind described withimproved means for removing the wire extremities that are caught in the device after an operative movement thereof. The foregoing and other objects of the invention will more fully appear from the following detailed description, and the distinctive features of novelty will be pointed out in theappe'nded claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a'. tool embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is an edge view thereof; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinalsectional view.
10 indicates the body of the tool comprising a head 10a and a handle portion 10". The head portion 10B is formed with a transverse bore 11 in which a pin 12 is fitted to turn. The head 10a hasr a longitudinal passage 13 therethrough of a dimension to receive one end portion of a band or wire B which is Cto be used for clamping the hose H. The inner portion of the pin 12, opposite the passage 13' is cut away for approximately half the diameter thereof presenting --a fiat" side 14 which is in alignment with the inner side of the passage 13. The pin 12 has rigid therewith a handle 15 projecting at a small angle with reference to the handle portion 10b of the 'body so that itmay be readily .grasped for turning the pin to Y. sever the band as now to be described.
\ The outer edge of the plain face 14: of
the pin thus constitutes a cutting or shearing edge in co-operation with the side of the passage 13 so that :when an extremity B of the hose band B has been drawn taut through properly, 4a pin 16`is mounted transversely in the body l0 a small distance outwardfrom the pin 12. This pin 16 is. formed with a i passage 17 therethrough which in one position of said pin is adaptedto receive the band extremity -lB therethrough as seen in Fig. 3. The pin 16 is equipped with suitable means for turning the same, this being shown as a hexagonal head 1,8 at one end' thereof and at the side of the tool, adapted to receive a wrench or the like for; operating the same.
The front of the heady 10* is beveled od directly in front of the passage 13 as indicated at 19.. The purpose of this bevel is so that after the band is drawn tautand clamped properly aroundthe hose by the turning ofthe pin 16 with the band extremity therethrough, the body of the tool may be swung downward from the position indicated in Fig. 3, thereby bending the band extremity'B backward at a substantially acute angle around the loop L of the clamp, whereby the clamp band will be se- E cure upon removal of the tool. After the tool has been operating as described, it will be understood thata portion of the severed extremity of the band will be wound around the pinfl. Fordisengaging this extremity, a cutter member 201s provided pivoted within the body .at 21 and adapted to.be swung upward to the-dotted r line position indicated in Fig. 3 so that its edge at 20 a engages the periphery of the pin 16. Then upon turning the pin in a clockwise direction as indicated in Fig. 3, the
-wire extremity willv be severed and may be readily removed.. The pins l2 and 16 may bedetachably assembled with the body of',
embodiment to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive,reference member mounted to turn in said head and co-o erative therewithfor severing the ban and means co-operative with said head for drawing the band taut preliminary to the severance thereof. 1
2. A -hose clamping tool comprising a body having a head integrally formed at one end thereof with a longitudinal passage' to-'reeeive a clamping band, a pin mounted to turn in the bOdy equipped to engage the extremity of the band to draw "the same taut, and mearis mounted in the head and eti-operative therewith'for severing the band. K
3. A hose clamping tool Comprising va body having a head integrally formed at one end thereof with a passage therethrough to receive a clamping band, and with a beveled face in front of said passage, means `borne by the body for drawing the band taut, and a pin mounted to turn in said head equipped for co-operation with the head to sever the band.
4. A hose clamping tool comprising a body having a head integrally 'formed at one end thereof, with a passa e there-' through to receivea clamping ban or wire, a pin mounted to turn in the body equipped to engage the extremity of the band to draw head being provided with a transverse pas-` sage, with the first mentioned passage opening into the transverse passage, a pin mounted to turn in the last mentioned,pas' sage and provided with a diametrieally disposed passage in line with the'rst mentioned passage in the head and adapted to receive one end of the band, a seeond pin 'mounted for rotation in the body and provided with a passage adaptedto. aline with the first mentioned passage in the head and the diametrieally disposed passage the first mentioned pin, said last mentioned pin being adapted to be operated for drawing the Wire taut, a handle ,operatively conneeted with the rst mentioned pin for rotating the pin in thel second mentioned passage in the head for causing thefrst mentioned passage inthe 'head and the diametrically disposed passage in the pin to be moved out of alinement, whereby the clampinfr band is sheared.
ln testimony whereof l aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
