IMPLEMENT FOR TRUING U? THREADS.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JACOB ABRAHAMSON,
- a citizen of the United States of America,
and resident of Asbury Park, in the county of Monmouth and State "of New Jersey, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements in Implements for Truing Up Threads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an implement for tru ing-up threads, and is particularly adapted for truing-up' the valve and-cap threads of' nipples of pneumatic tires, positioned interiorly and exteriorly, respectively, of the nipple. i 3
- "As is well known, the threads of the nipple frequently become worn, burred or distorted, thereby rendering it troublesome permits of either the internal or external' of the hub of the hand-wheel is positioneda central, cylindrical passage, through thread-cutting elements operatin and diificult to insert .the pneumatic valve or apply the cap, The present invention threads, or both, being readily and expeditiously trued-up or re-cut. The implement may operate on one setof threads at a time,
a sleeve extending beyond the end of the hub and adapted to fit over or embrace the nipple. The hand-wheel is provided with which a stem extends, and positioned on one end of the stem is a second cutter-for truing-up the valve threads of thenipple. v In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one practical embodiment of the invention, but the construction shown therein, is to be understood as illustrative, only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.

Referring to the drawings, A indicates a nipple of the type generally employed on pneumatic tires. As 1s well understood,
the nipple is provided with a longitudinal passage 0;, screw-threaded, as at a, near the free end of'the nipple to allow of the inser-v tion of the usual valve, not shown. A portion of the nipple near its free end is of reduced diameterand is also screw-threaded, as at a, whereb a protecting cap may be normally screwed upon said nipple, or the cap of a tire pump may be temporarily iiecuied thereon while the tire is being in ate " It is well known that, in practice, the
threads 01 for the cap frequently become burred or distorted during the insertion of the nipple through the small aperture in the rim of a. vehicle wheel, or from other causes, whereas the valve threads (1 frequently become likewise distorted or gummed with oil, so as to render the insertion or removal of the valve very diflicult. t
According to the specific form' of the invention shown, a cutter element B is provided, which cutter element embodies the standard threading employed on pneumatic the nipples for the cap retaining means. .This cutter element is shown as formed or positioned within the hub c of a hand-wheel C. Surrounding the hub, fixed thereto, and extending beyond the lower end of the same, is a sleeve D of substantially the'same interior diameter as the diameter of nipple A. This sleeve is, therefore, adapted to fit over the nipple in the manner shown in Fig. 2, whereupon the rotation of hand-wheel C will cause the cutter to operate upon the distorted threads a and re-cut or true-up the same.
Extending longitudinally through a central passage in hand-wheel C and hub a, is a stem E, the lower end of which carries a cutter element F, corresponding to the standard valve threading of tire nipples. Upon stem E is fixed a hand-wheel 0 whereby stem E may be manually operated and the cooper ating cutter F actuated. Stem E is preferably extended beyond hand=wheel e, and at the end thereof is formed a valve removing member 0. Member 6 is adapted to be inserted into the longitudinal passage of the nipple and engage with the valve,'whereupon rotation of the. stem will remove the valve and allow of the truing-up operation of the threads a.
In employing the implement in the truingup of the nipple threads referred to, said implement is ositioned upon the nipple so that the nipp e extends into sleeve. D. By grasping hand-wheel C and rotating the same, cutter B will be rotated,ithereby truing-up or re-cutting the cap threads a. If
the valvethreads a are to be re-cut, the operation' of applying the implement to the nipple is the same as that described for truing-up the cap threads a but in the subsequent operation, insteadof operating handwheel C, hand-wheel e is rotated. Thus, cutter F is actuated to re-cut 'or true-up the valve threads (1., while hand-wheel C and its associated cutter B remain idle:
It will be manifest from the foregoing clescription, as well as from the accompanyingdrawings, that either one of the cutter elements may be operated independently of the other. However, the length of stem E, between the base. of hand-wheel e and its cutter F, is such that, when stem E is depressed sufliciently to bring hand-wheel 6 into engagement with the upper face of hand-wheel G, the cutters Fand B will be in juxtaposition. Such being the case, the parts may be brought into the positions specified, whereupon the hand-wheels will be so associated that they may be grasped simultaneously by the hand of the operator and thus operated to re-cut or true-up both the threads a and a at the same time. The cutters may, therefore, be used either singly or collectively in the carrying out of their functions.
The implement of the present invention is of extreme simplicity and great utility and value, c. g., as a part of an autoinobilists tool kit. It is small, compact, efficient and easily operated in the carrying out of its functions, and, moreover, is so constructed that none of its component parts can get out of order or become broken.
In the form of the invention illustrated, the uiding sleeve D serves to hold the parts in p ace during the operation of the cutters, and this is the form which I prefer to employ. However, while this sleeve might be dispensed with, the resulting structure would not operate with the same efiiciency as in its preferred form, in-so far as the positioning of the implement upon the nipple is core cerned, although it would true-up or re-cut the threads very. well, even in the absence of the sleeve.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutters, and separate and independent means for op ating each cutter, said means being juxtaposed whereby the cutters may be operatvl .2
either separately or conjointly.
' 2. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutters, a carrier member for supporting and actuating theexternal cutter, and a stem mounted on the carrier member of the external cutter .for supporting and actuating the internal cutter independently of the external cutter.
3.. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutters, a carrier member for supporting and actuating the external cutter, and a stem rotatably journaled in said carrier member for supporting and actuating the internal cutter independently of the external cutter.
4. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutters, each of which is operable independently of the other, a hand-wheel for separately actuating the external cutter and a hand-wheel for separately actuating the internal cutter, the said hand-wheels being juxtaposed whereby both may be simultaneously grasped andboth cutters actuated simultaneously.
5. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutters, separate and independent means for operating each cutter, said means being juxtaposed whereby the cutters may be operated either separately or conjointly, and means for mounting said cutters for longitudinal movement and rotation in operative relation to the work to be done. 7
6. A thread cutting implement embodying external and internal thread cutte each of which is operable independently of t e other,
a hand-wheel for separately actuating the external cutter and a hand-wheel for separatel actuating the internal cutter, the said han wheels being juxtaposed whereby both 7 cutters actuated simultaneously, and means I may be simultaneously grasped and both means for separately actuating the internal thread cutter independently of the external thread cutter, the actuating means of both cutters being juxtaposed, whereby they may be simultaneously operated to simultaneously actuate both cutters.
8. A thread-cutting implement embodying an external thread cutter, means for. actuating the same, an' internal thread cutter mounted coaxially with and movable 'relatively' to the external .thread cutter, means for separately actuating the internal thread cutter independently of the external thread cutter, the actuating means of both cutters being juxtaposed, whereby they may be simultaneously operated to simultaneously ao .tu ate both cutters, andmeans cooperating with the cutters for mounting them in op-' erative relation to" the work to. be done.
9. A thread cutting implement for truing-upthe valve and cap threads of pneumatic tire nipples, embodying a cap thread cutter element, means for mountingthe same for longitudinal and rotary movement on atire nipple, and means for rotatingthe cutter, in combination with a valve thread cutter, a' stem thereon, said stem being mounted for longitudinal movement and rotation on the cap thread cutter element and coaxial therewith, andmeans for rotating said stem to operate said cutter. a 10. A threadcutting implement for truing-up the valve and cap threads of pneumatic tire nipples, embodying a cap same for longitudinal and rotary movement on a tire nipple, and means for rotating the cutter, in combination with a valve thread cutter, a stem thereon, said stem being mounted for rotation and longitudinal movement on the cap thread cutter element whereby relative operative position ofthe cutters is maintained, and means for rotating said stem to actuate its cutter. A thread cutting implement for truing-up the valve and cap threads'of pneumatic tire nipples, embodying a cap thread cutter element, means for mounting the same for longitudinal and rotaryfmovement on a the nipple, and'means for rotating the cutter, in combination with a valve thread cutter, a stem thereon, said stem being mounted for longitudinal movement and rotation on the cap thread cutter element and c0- axial therewith, means for rotating said stem to operate said cutter, and means on the stem for removing the valve of thenipple.
