' Application filed November 28, 1921. Serial No. 518,223.
To all whom it may comma.-
Be it known that T, Gnonen Posrvrcii, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shaving Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
' This invention relates to improvements in shaving gauges.
The object of thejinvention is to provide a device which is designed to be attached to a safety razor, whereby the cutting edge is accurately positioned when the razor is used. It is not designed to be used with any particular make of razor and the razor shown in the drawings is merely illustrative.
The invention broadly considered comprises a member adapted to be attached to the razor, a part for engaging the upper side and back portion of the ear close to the head, and another part for engaging the eyebrow, whereby the cutting edge of the razor is positioned each time it is used.
Means are provided for varying the position of the cutting edge of the razor, that is to say, the point at which the razor commences to trim the hair may be varied as desired. This will be clearly understood from the detailed description.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view showing the device as used.
Fig. 2 is a plan view in which the position of the parts of the device are reversed from that shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the part that engages the eyebrow folded, and the telescoping tube moved inward on to the main rod.
Fig. is a view on the line @4 of Fig. 3 illustrating the pivotal connection of the part by means of which the device is clamped to the razor, and
Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail view showing the device attached to the razor but removed from the head of the user.
Referring to the drawings in detail:
1 designates the rod portion on one end of which is placed the slidable or extension tube 2 which is designed to engage the upper or rear portion of the ear close to the head as indicated at 3 for positioning this end of the device. Pivotally connected at the point at to the opposite end of the rod 1 is a piece 3. Pivotally attached to this piece is the part 3 which is formed with the spaced arms 5 for attaching the device to the safety razor, indicated as a whole by the numeral 6. Thespace 7between these arms receives the projections 8 of the razor as shown in Figs. .1 and 5. The handle 8 clamps the piece 3 in place. 10 designates a spring which passes through an-opening 11in the rod 1. @ne end of the spring is secured to the rod 1 by means of the slidable piece 12,
the other end of the spring is attached to the P1666 '3 by means ofthe clamp 3 The piece 3 is formed with stops to limit the lateral movement of the piece 3 relative to the piece 3. The piece 3 is pivotally connected to the piece 3 at the point 13. This pivotal connection is indicated in Fig. 4;. Also pivotally connected to the rod 1 at 16 is the piece 14 which is designed to engage the user immediately above the eye as shown in Fig. 1. When the device is used for positioning the razor. The device therefor accurately positions the razor and determines the line on which the hair will be trimmed at the forward portion of the ear. This line is indicated at 15. By sliding the piece 12 along on the rod 1 the angle at which the arm 3 can be opened may be adjusted and varied since this arm would strike the slidable piece and position the edge of the razor. The dotted lines 18 indicate different angular positions of the member 3. It is necessary to have the part 1 1 pivoted since, when the device is used on the opposite side of the head, it must be turned in the opposite direction as shown in F ig. 2. The pivot connection 13 is for permitting the razor to turn in order to bring its cutting edge against the face of the user.
It is, of course, understood that the device is only to be used for trimming hair and is then removed after the trimming is completed. The device as constructed may be folded into a compact space and placed in the carrying case of the safety razor.
It is evident that the operator in using the razor moves it upward as indicated by the arrow 17 until the piece 3' strikes the rubber adjustingpiece 12 which would determine the upper limit or movement of the razor. It is then drawn downward to produce the accurate trimming of the hair on the line desired.
Nhat I claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose described, the combination, of a rod, a sleeve slidably thereon, a member pivotaliy connected thereto and having a forkdike extension for at taching the device to a safety razor, and means on the rod for varying and adjusting the extent of movement of the pivoted member.
2. A device for the purpose described, comprising in combination, a rod, an exten sion' member thereon for engaging the upper and rear portion of the ear of the user, a part for engaging the head of the user at or, near the eyebrow, a member pivotally connected to the rod for attaching the razor thereto, said member having a pivoted portionto permit the razor to turn, and a part on the rod for varying the extent of movement of the pivoted member.
3. In a shaving gauge, the combination, of a rod, an extension piece thereon, a pivoted member at one end of the rod for positioning the device on the head of the user,
oted member whereby the line at which the hair is to be trimmed may be varied.
4.. A device for the purpose described, comprising in combination, a rod, parts thereon for engaging the head of the user as at two spaced points, a part connected to the rod for attaching the device to a safety razor, a spring for normally moving the attached razor towards the rod, and means for varying the position of the razor relative to the rod for positioning the razor, whereby the line on Which the hair may be trimmed may be varied.
