The length of the cross arms permits the marking of a considerable portion of the garment before turning the garment to present another portion of the fabric to the cross arms. Moreover, the character of the means for separating the cross arms permits a very quick-operation of the device with very little efiort on the part of the operator.

It should be understood that numerous modifications may be made in the illustrated structure without departing from the inventive idea, the showing and detailed description being merely illustrative and in no sense restrictive of the invention.

I claim: '1. A skirt gauge comprising a base, a

standard. connected to said base, an arm A skirt gauge comprising a base, an anchor block on said base having a recess therein, a standard having one end secured in said block, an arm having one end inserted in'said recess and pivotally connected to said block, cross-arms on said standard andsaid arm, said cross-arms being adjustable along the standard and arm, spring means for holding together said standard and arm, and a lever pivoted to said standard having cam means thereon adapted to move and to hold the arm away from said standard.

A skirt gauge comprising a base, an anchor block on said base having a recess therein, a standard having one end secured in said block, an arm having one end inserted in said recess and pivotally connected to said block, cross-arms on said standard and said arm, said cross-arms being adjust able along the standard and arm, spring means for holding together said standard and arm, and a lever pivoted to said standard having cam means thereon adapted to move and to hold the arm away from said standard, one of said cross-arms being narrower than the other whereby the edge of the narrower cross-arm serves as a guide in marking and the wider cross-arm affords a bearing surface for the chalk.
