DOLL.
Application :filed May 3, 1921. Serial No. 466,423.
To all whom t may concern."
Be it known that I, KATHAINE S. BRY- DONE-JACK, citizen of the Dominion of Canada, residing at Glacier, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specica-- The @1011, whichl is the subjea of this,
application, is made of a material having a surface which is not receptive to dirt, is therefore lasting in its cleanliness, and when soiled, can be readily washed and-its original colour and freshness fully restored. The surface of the material isalso such as can be brightly and artistically colored, and the doll is made in a manner that it will retain its original form.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, reference being made to the drawings Vby which it is accompanied, in which:
Fig. l is a front view of a doll made in accordance with my requirements.l
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail showing the means by which the hair ofV the doll is represented. l
The body of thev doll is constructed of front and back layers 2 and 3 of oilcloth or the like material, wherein a fabric is surfaced with a dressing which is impervious to moisture and impenetrable to dirt. The two layers 2 and 3 are cut and painted or printed to represent the outline of a child or an animal from opposite sides. The hair may be painted or printed on the oilcloth, but is preferably represented with wool or other material of a suitable color, sewn through the cloth and looped on the outer side, somewhat as shown in Fig. 3.
The arms are preferably connected to the body throughout their length, as shown in the drawing, or through the greater part of their length, and the legs, where shown,
may be joined together throughout their length or adjacent the feet, tosave them being torn off in the rough handling to. which they are exposed. y e
These front and backportions 2 and 3 arev sewn together around their edges as at 4, and the space between the back and front isstuifed with any suitable material in a manner to show the body and limbs in various amounts of bas relief proportioned` to the part they represent, that is, without eX- cessivev rotundity.
Lines of stitches 5 may be introduced where' necessary to indicate the lines of 'con-i nection of the head and limbs to the body.
When completed the entire surfaceA and particularly round the edges, may be varnished not only to protect'the paint but to Aenhance the washable character of the surface.
in manufacturing, the material mayin sheet form be printed inthe colors to rep-lV` V resent the parts they are designed to show,
and thereafter be cut with dies. f
Attention is particularly directed to the sanitary and washable character of thematerial, and to the artistic finish which that material is susceptible of having imparted to it.
. Also to the fact that the parts are edge sewn so as to preserve the contour of the doll under rough usage. n
To the manner in which the hair is represented: n .l
To the coloured representation of the flesh andv of the material of the childs clothing.
eov
Also to the manner of connectingy the limbs to the body'or to one another throughout the greater' part of their length, where-r b v untimely destruction is avoided.
. And finally to the inishing coat of. varnish,
whereby the edges of the seams are protected bothl as regards their strength and against y the possible adherence of dirt.
A particularly attractive childs toy or doll may thus be made which is free from `the numerous objections vusually chargeable against dolls of this class. A s f Although the foregoing description andillustration are particularly directed to .the representation of afchild, the same construction is also applicable to the representation of animals, with the same advantages.
Having now particularly described my in" f vention,-I hereby declarethat what I claim as new and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent, is: l
A ehilds doll made or' two layers ot' oileloth or the like material each layer out and paintedAL` to represent the outline of the doll from opposite sides7 the limbs being connected to the body or to one another throughout the greater parto their length, said vlayers being flat sealnedtogether round t their edges and lightly Stued between withl l0 any suit-able material and Surface coated with a water-proofing'- Inaterial. t
In testimony whereof I aiX iny signature.
KATHARINE S. BRYDONE-JACK.
