To aZZwLo/m t may concern.: l Be it known that LJOHN V. Honk, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing .at (lleva land, in the county of Cuyahoga and State l of Ohio, have invented `a certain new and useful Improvement in Cartons to Serve Retaining Receptacles for Merchandise, fof which the'following is a f ull, clear, and eX- act description. 'f d p This invention is directed to a carton, or container, which is adapted in its "folded condition to serve asaretaining' receptacley for merchandise, vandis so fashioned, that parts of the same may form an easel, which may be folded intoposition beneath the body of the container and serve to support the container in inclined position. d '1 Reference should vbe had tothe accompanying drawings forming a part ofjthis specification inwhich Fig. `1 is a perspective View of a folded carton; Fig. 2 is a perspec-y tive view showing` carton inopen position; Fig. 3 isa transverse section through-the body of the carton; Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the cart-on and its-easel in open position; Fig. 5 is a"longitudinal"sec tion through thecarton in folded position; Fig. 6 is a perspective viewV of the carton in. partially 'folded position; Fig. 7 is `a plan View of the blank used in connecting the carton. l Y
Referring to the drawings the body of the caiton isindicated at 1 -and comprises upstanding end members 2 and 3, a'rear member 4 and a front `member 5. (lo-operating with the rear member l4`of the body portion is af member which forms in part a display member and a cover member. This member is formed in two parts. which are indicated at 6 and 7, the'members and T being secured together part way throughout their length. The members 6 and 7 are detached attheir ends, and the member 7 has a tongued portion. which isindicated at 8.
At- 9 there is generally indicated whatfl term van easel member. This easel member comprises a bottom portion 10 andupstanding side portions`11 and 12. and a. rear portion 13, which is formed by vco-operating folds, as later described,

formed yin the joining members 14 and 18. 1V hen the easelmember is moved to its rear most position the end member 13 of the easel lies against the bottom member 2 of the carton and this member is heldin position by the joining member 18. Under the conditions named,n the joining` member 14 secures What becomes the lower edge of the easel member and holds it in delinite position with respect to the body of the carton. In fact, the joining members-18 and 14 both co-operate to hold the easel member in its slanting position as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The member 18 extends .along the bottom of the box, While the joining' member 14 lies in conta-ct with the surface upon which the carton is supported.
The end member 13 of the easel lies between theA joining members 14 and 18, and, as before stated, these members are provided with scores, so that the member 14 folds Within the easel While the member 1R folds upon the outside ofthe easel .when the easel is moved into position to close the carton.
j The blank out ot which the carton is made is shown in Fig'. 7. The blank is a two part blank, that. is to say, one part of the blankis utilized in forming thebody part of :the earton as Well as the display member 6 and the coter member 7, While the other port-ion ot the blank isutilized to make the easel member and the joining members 14 and 18. The blank is preferably made from card board. or similar material, and the portion which forms the bottom 2 of the carton has` extensions 2a and. 2* formed at the sides which :told uponeach other to form a double side wall a nd the same time the blank is scored so `that the double side member may be folded into an nprightposition with respect to the bottom of the bla-nk 2. The front member of the carton is formed by a. scored portion 2. which is adapted to fold into an upright position and there are extending' tabs carriedv b v these portions which told inside of the side members to hold assembled end and side members in position. The bottom in the blank has an extension at 2d which is yadapted to be folded into upright position and end extending member 2e which is formed as part of one of the side members 2* that is adapted to extend along the rear end of the box and lie inside of the part 2, Each of the side members. such as 2a is formed with an extension 2f and 2'=', which members when folded form a, part `of the back or the rear portion of the body of the carton. Each of these two members 2f and 2f* is notched as indicated at 2 and told into locking position when these two members 2f and 2xg are brought together.
The member 2g is .formed as an extension of the cover member 7, Which. is so formed that when the members 21'V and 2g are brought together the cover member 7 is in position to (3o-operate with side Walls ot the carton to form a cover. n
The display member 6 is in part attached or glued to the back member and is scored transversely as indicated at 6a. rlhe portion of the member6 which` extends below the score 6a is notched i. precisely in the same manner as the member 2g and furthermore this portion of the member 6 which extends below the score 6Z1 is not secured to the cover member 7. bled .With regards to the member 2f, the portion, oit the member 6 which is below the l/Vhen the member 2g is assemscore 6a, is assembled with it, lso that this free portion of the member 67 which is indii cated at 6b, is rietionally held between the member 2g` and the member 2f and furtherf morel the member 6*? is notched, and along with the member 2g cooperates With the notched member 2f.
