NEVSLAPER CLAIM?.
Application :tiled rTune 2e,
To all whom t may concern;
Be it known that we, JOHN J. Newman `and LLOYD L. Nnwiirnn, citizens of the UnitedStates, residing at Rockwood, in the 5 county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lilewspaper Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
rlhe present invention relates to improvements in paper clamps and has for an object to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted for attachment to newspapers, blue prints, specifications and other papers orthe like in which numbers of sheets are to be held securely together against accidental detachment and for ready folding so as to give access to inner sheets without creasing at the fold.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a device for the above purpose in which the article may be stamped conveniently and quickly from spring metal or other appropriate material and bent to shape in two operations; wherein `the device is so constructed and shaped as to permit of being readily attached to a sheaf of papers and lhaving a resilient binding engagement therewith such as to oppose successfully any tendency to pull the clamp from the papers in any other direction than a longitudinal movement` coinciding with the edges of the paper sheets.
l/Vith the foregoing and other objects iu view, the invention will be described more S5 particularly in the following descrip tion and will be set forth in detail in the appended claims.
lin the drawings, wherein like numerals refer to like or corresponding parts through Figure l is a plan view of a newspaper showing applied thereto an improved clamp constructed according to the present invention. y
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional viewy taken through the clamp and through a number of sheets of papers held thereby, and showing one method of folding the. sheets upon the clamp.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the improved clamp.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectiontaken on l the line 4-4 in Figure 2. Figure 5 is an end view of the device, and
Figure is a side view with a central por-f 1922. Serial llo. 570,715.
tion brolrenl away showing a suspending ring.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the improved clamp consists of a piece of sheet material rolled substantially into a cylinder 7 having its longitudinal free edges 8 and 9 slightly overlapped.
The material of which the clamp is made is preferably thin resilient steel although other metal or material may be found well suited to the purpose, particularly celluloid. rllhe end portions of the cylinder 'i' are mutually curved as represented at l() and ll., inclining toward the overlapped parts 8 and 9 and forming jaws to guide theedges of the paper into the clamp. Moreover as most clearly shown in Figures l and 6 the end portions of the cylinder are drawn outwardly or flared as at l2 to avoid coming in contact with the paper or cutting or doing other injury thereto.
ln Figure 6 we have illustrated the device as equipped with a ring or eye 13 split as at la and inserted through openings l5 and l@ made in the central upper portion of the clamp cylinder. The ring affords an excellent means for suspending the clamp upon a nail or hoolr extending from a wall and in this connection the device will be found appropriate for the holding of calendar sheets.
ln Figure l the improved clamp is shown in place upon the newspaper 17. rllhe clamp will normally occupy a position substan-` tially centrally of the sheet and in this position it will reinforce and back the pages of the paper thereby enabling the reader to fold the sheets baclrwardly upon themselves giving access to the interior of the paper without encountering crinkling of the sheets along the fold line. rlhis difficulty is found particularly in railway trains or in other windy places. We have also indicated in dotted lines in Figure l the clamp as having been moved to a lower position upon the paper, thisto enable the newspaper to be folded upon the transverse line 18. The paper may thus be folded or rolled up and placed in the pocket without having to entirely detach the clamp therefrom. However, if desired the clamp may be removed and placed in the pocket. lt will not be 1nconvenient nor troublesome to carry any more so than a lead pencil or fountain pen.
As the clamp is slipped over the edges of the sheets, due to the overlapping parts 8 and 9 the paper will be given a tendency to curl Within the hollow Cylinder and the parts 8 and 9 will be pried apart slightly, creating pressure upon the sheets due to the elasticity inherent in the metal. Furth@- more the construction and disposition oi the overlapped edges is such that any tendency to pull the clamp from the sheets at right angles to the edges of the sheets will develop an extremely strong resilient aetion in the clamp tending to bind the papers more closely therein, ln this Way any attempt Will be successfully resisted to Withdraw the clamp in any other than the longitudinal sliding' niet7 nient and this will be relatively easy for the user in attaching` end removing the clamp but the frictional engagement will be such as to avoid the clamp casually Creeping along the edge oil the paper.
It will be appreciated from the Yleregroing that We here provided en improved clamp suitable for binding pepers of any cha-:meter 'together and for allowing` the sheets to be folded Without difiieultyr erinlling; or creasing. The improved clamp is made 'from relatively inexpensive material inyolvinsg in its manuiaeture but tno (nie/rations so that the resultant product is economical and may be sold in the market at sii rill cost.
W e have shown and described a preferred and satisfactory construction but it is oh- Vious that Various changes and .modifications might be inade and We Wish it underl. A clamp comprising; a resilient sheet.
