IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.

This invention has relation to bracewrenches 5 `and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of l the notched jaw-blocks, slotted slide-bar, and clamp-screws, the object being to provide a simple, strong, and economical means A,of adjusting the jaws of such a wrench to or from the axis of the handle at equal distances,

'In the accompanying drawings', the letter A designates the brace-handle rigidly attached fto the center ofthe slide-bar B, in'such a manner that the latter will be transversely arranged and at ri ght angles with the axis of the handle. Opposite the point at which the handle is attached a squared aperture or bit-seat, a., may be formed in the center of the slide-bar A 0n each side of the bitseat the bar B is slotted horizontally and laterally, at b, for the reception of the upper projecjtions of the jaw-blocks. Each jaw-block C is, ,in its general form, wedge-shaped, the lower portion being the jaw c, and the upper portion being extended to form a hook-shaped projection, d, the end d of which is bent or turned laterally from the shank d, and at right angles therewith, parallel with the shoulder e of the block. In this manner is formed, between the shoulder e and the hook end d', a lateral rectangular notch, g, which is designed, when the projection d is inserted into the slot b of the slide-bar, to receive the lower of the two parallel bars h hf, which bound said slot on its upper and lower sides. The upper bar, h', is wider than the lower one, h, which is cut away laterally or recessed, at k, on thel side next the shank d, so that when in position the outer face of the latter will be flush with the wall of the slide-bar, or with the edge of the upper bar, h. In this manner the jaw is connected to the slideabar on the side without unsightly lateral projections, the sides of the jaw -block being in general flush with the sides of the slide-bar. D indicates the clamp-screw, provided with a broad shoulder, s, designed to abut against the edges of the bars h h on the side opposite the shank d, the screw passing into the slot b, and engaging in a threaded perforation in the hook end d of the jaw-block. When the screw is tightened it serves to hold the jaw to the location in the slot at which it has been adjusted, Each jaw-block is faced on its inner side with a leather or rubber pad usually, a recess, z, having a transverse shoulder7 z', being formed in the inner face of the block, so that the pad may be secured with a single rivet. When a nut or other article is clamped between the jaws they hold their places not alone by virtue of the clamp-screws, but also by clamping or biting the bar B at three points-that is to say, against the under side of the bar h', and against the upper and under sides of the bar h.. v-
It will be observed that the bitingpoints of the j aw-block are upon parts rigidly connected therewith, so that the jaw cannot give way unless by fracture.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In abrace-wrench, the laterally slotted transverse bar B, in connection with the lateral clamp-screws and the jaw-blocks, having biting Y shoulders e and hook projections d, the latter entering the slots of the bar B, and perforated to engage with said clamp-screws, substantially as specified.
