Application led May 22, 192,0. Serial No. 383,431.
To @Zlib/om it may'lconcevrn: Y With a vport through which the air enters 55 Be it known that I, CESARE CAMPUS, a the bottle as the food is withdrawn theresubject of the King of Italy, residing in the from. The invention also relates to devices borough of Brooklyn, in'- the county "of for maintaining the air nipple in position Kings, city and State of New York, have against accidental displacement'as well as invented 'an' Improvement in Nursing Botagainst removal by the child during the use 60 ttes (for ywhich I iled an application in' of the bottle. I am aware that .heretofore Italy June 13,1914,Patent-No. 117 Vol. 435; Vvarious devices have been proposed for ad- 143,99()7 dat@ of patent July 24, 1914)', of mittingair to a nursing bottle as the food 10 `which the following is aspecilication. is withdrawn therefrom but in all such in- Y In the customary use of nursing bottles as stances which have come to my attention' the 65 ordinarily constructed the liquid food as Structure is more or less complicated and y withdrawn from thebottle is replaced by air Costly; in 110. instance provides for Ithe use which necessarily passes through the mouth of tWo ordinary nipples and in no instance of the child, the nipple through' which the is the structure such that none of the air food is withdrawn and the remaining food admitted to the bottle `is permitted to pass 70 in the bottle. `Ubviously, this lhas several through any port-ion of the food contained serious disadvantages, some of whichv are therein. Furthermore, in carrying out my that the air in' thus passing through the Vinvention, I may provide the air inlet nipfood has a refrigerating effect, thereby cool' ple with a suitable material for simultaneing the food and'reducing its temperature to OuSlyflteI'ing the air as the same passes 75 such a low point before the food is consumed into the bott-le and controlling the admission that the food is too coolto then be taken into 0f the air so as to also control the rate at the lstomach of the child; the air thus adwhich the liquid food may be drawn through mitted also may be impure fromhone source the` feeding nipple. Fig. 1 is an elevation and partial cross The object of my invention is to overcome section illustrating myimproved nursing these diiiculties and in So doing I employ bottle with the same in the approxi-mate po- 100 a bottle which, as is customary at one end, sit-ion for use.

air and to prevent the passage of the liquid .35 food through thev nipplein the oppositediy rection.` In `th's form of the invention 1n order to maintain the air nipplein position preventing it from `becoming accidentally' or otherwise displaced, I prefer to provide the outer surface of the bottle centrally of the flanged Vopening with 4ribs 16 having an intermediate recess 17 and to employ a cap 18 having secured thereto spring clamp 4 l the use of4 this form of the invention, as-will' the position air into the interior .tially the order to pmembers v19 by wise adaptedto the'ca member end o the nipple lit into :the recess 17 when 1 8, as will be understood, may with the free passage of the of the nipple, the openings in the cap 18 being indicated at 21. the 'use of this bottle', as will now be appreciated, inasmuch as the valve in the air nipple is placed at the bottom of the bottleg adjacent the sidewall it will be impossible the bottle through the nipple topass through any portion of the food contained in the bottle and hencewill have approximately no cooling effect on the food and ,cannot bybeing impure contaminate the 'food to any appreciable extent.
.Also that in"'clean1ng the bottle the yair nipple is removed and water may be caused to flow continuously ingat the mouth o liangedopening, and also the sary, maybe 'nserted' through the flanged opening to cleanse the lower portion of the interiorjof the bottlel at which the greater proportion A'of any deposit lwhich ma acf cumulate inthe bottle isusuallyfoun "ReferrngtoFigs 3 anda, the flanged the wallsv of thebottle and the air nipple are in all respects equivalent ,to those hereinbefore described. In'this structure, however, 1 instead of 1 employing 4the spring clamps I may employ sp-ring clips placed interiorly ofithenipple to secure the d `same andthe cap in place.- In this struc? ture, the cap employed Iis indicated at 22 andsimilar t the'cap-18 hereinbefore de# scribed. Suitably connected to the cap 22 is the spring clipl V4member 23. These parts through the bottle, enterf the bottle and leaving Ina-y be secured bythe rivets24 or otherwise.

As shown in Fig. 5, the "caprnember 25 is adapted Vto fit overv the end of 'the nipple after the saine has Ibeen turned back over'the flange 13 and isfitted in oppositely disposed Vpositions with hooks 26 'to which may-be connecteda rubber Vbandor string 27 or lother similar device from one hook tothe other and lying withinthe recess 17 between the ribs 16 to maintain thecap 'member in place. These, however, as well'as other obvious devices may be employed to. maintain the nipple in positionagainstaccidental or other unintentlonal displacement.
placed that no part of the air admitted to In Fig. 6, I have shown the iiange 13 as fitted with a bead or circular rib 28- over which `the open end of ,the air nipplel may ,bel folded, and in ordinaryuse this is suiicient to normally maintain the air nipple in position-f Consequently this structure answers all the necessaryrequirements' for use in feeding infants so long as the nursingv bottle has to be man-aged by an attendant, the other vfeatures being more4 especially adapted for use with children after they have-'become'old enough to handle the 'bot-- tle themselves. These various devices, however, for maintaining the air nipple in position are more or less incidental to the main featuresof the invention which, as hereinbefore stated, reside in providing a nursing bottle with van air inlet nipple orvalve so the bottle as the food is Withdrawn therefrom will pass through any of the food in the bottle for producing the beneficial effects and overcoming the disadvantages to which attention has hereinbefore been directed".
I claim as my invention: l
