VANITY CASE.
Application filed June 29, 1920. Serial No. 392,850.
pads, and one of the primary objects of the invention is to so construct the said means that the same will securely retain the pad or pads in place in the case and will yet permit of ready removal of the pads in the event it is desired to replenish the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device for the purpose stated so constructed that when arranged within the case it will effectually brace the opposite walls of the case and prevent them being inwardly bulged in the event abnormal pressure should be brought to bear against them.
A further object of the invention is to provide means for securely retaining the device of the invention within the vanity case so that it will not be liable tobe ejected when the compressed powder pads or tablets are removed from the case.

In the drawings, the body of the case is indicated in general by the numeral 1 and the said body comprises a front'wall 2, a rear wall 3, a bottom wall 1, and end walls 5, the said end walls connecting the front and rear walls along curved lines. The case is provided with a lid which. is indicated in general by the numeral 6 and which comprises a front wall 7, a rear wall 8, end walls '9, and a top 10, the lid being so formed and proportioned as to fit snugly over the open top of the case when the lid is in closed position.

The retaining device embodyingthe present invention is preferably stamped or otherwise formed from a sheet metal blank and the said device, which is indicated in general by the numeral 14-, comprises side portions 15 which are resiliently and integrally connected at their upper edges and which are inclined downwardly away from each other, as clearly shown in Figures 5 and 6 of the drawings, the side members being normally spread apart but being adapted to be brought toward each other against the resiliency of the connecting portion at their upper edges. These side portions 15 are provided at their lower edges with laterally extending wings which are indicated by the numeral 16 and which constitute the base of the retaining member. In assembling the member within the case, the member is disposed with its base portions 16 resting upon the upper side of the bottom 4 of the body of the case and with the forward corner of said member engaging beneath the shoulder 18 as clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. The opposite or rear corner of the member is notched or cut away as at 17 so that this corner may be engaged beneath the hinge 11 also as shown in the said F igure 3. In that form of the invention shown in Figure 5 of the drawings, each side portion 15 is formed with perpendicular incisions 18 and with a horizontally extending incision 19 connecting the lower ends of the incisions 18, the material between the incisions being deflected in an outward direction so as to provide a resilient tongue which is indicated by the numeral 20, and in this form of the invention, if desired, the

In the drawings, the numeral 23 indicates the compressed powder pads or tablets which are to be held within the vanity case by means of the retaining member above described, and these pads or tablets are of general circular marginal contour and are designed to be disposed one within each of the compartments formed by the partitioning of the interior of the body of the vanity case by", the "retaining member 14. After the retaining member has been positioned within the body of the vanity case, the compressed powder pads or tablets may be placed Within their respective compartments and pressed downwardly until they seat upon the bottom of the said case at which time the resilient tongue 20 will be caused to bear firmlyagainst the adjacent sides of the pads and, due to the resiliency oi? theside portions 15, and the tendency of these portions to expand, the pads will be urged rea ers in the direction of the end Walls of the body and will in fact be firmlylheld against these Walls. It is preferable that the said end walls of basebe formed with protuberances 24: which are designed to engage over the lower portions of the respective pads or tablets so as to serve as an additional means for retaining the pads in place.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

The combination with a vanity case having a protuberance upon the inner surface of its wall at the ends-thereof, and a member disposed within the case and constituting a partition and comprising re siliently connected side portions lnormally spread and provided with laterally-deflected tongues designed to bear against one side prising spaced resiliently connected nor-f mally spread SlClE POl'hlOIlS, and flTeSlllBIltbearing tongue deflected outwardlyfrom each otsaid side portions and 'designed'to engage against one side of a cosmetic pad or the like when the, device is disposed with in a vanitycase or similar container.
