QDEVICEIVTO racrnrrnrn oiinenriisor ronaooo rrrnslff" Application filed August 5,1921; Seria1No.490,10 6.'
T 0 (ZZZ whomit 'Illd-f/ concern: I
Be it known that I, EDWARD HENRY Hominy a subject of the King 1 of Great Britain and Ireland, and a resident of Oldharn, county of Lancaster, England. have in vented certain new and useful improve-L or the like. The latter may then be vigorously shaken, and the pipe cigarette or ci holder cleansed in a cleanly and. etlicient manner.
Accordingly, it will be understood that the present invention primarily contem plates a novel apparatus for cleansing pipes or similar smoking articles by pursuing a thoroughly practical and reliable method, which involves the plugging up of the opposite ends of the article thereby to enable the same to receive a cleaning fluid which may be agitated to accomplish the cleaning operation.
Preferred and practical means for carry 1 ing out the invention are shown in the accompanymg drawings, 1T1 'Wl11ChZ Figure 1 is a vieW of a pipe showing the,
appliances of the present invention in operative position.
Figures 2 and 3 are perspective views-of alternate forms of stem plug.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings, y
In carrying the invention into effect the pipe (1 having the usual bowl and stem portion is intended to have the bowl closed by the plug 7) for example, and the passageway in the stem closed by the stem plug cl. The said plugs 72 and (Z may be composed of cork, Wood, rubber or composition, or any other suitable material, and the former is'ot cylindrical shape or in the form of a.
truncated cone, or otherwise shaped to render it adaptable as a plug to stop up the bowl opening, but not to occupy the whole and October a, 1920, Patent such an openin closure Wall.
of the bowl. It may be providedon itstop and bottom faces, oreither, With-a central circular recess 0, the. functions of such recesses being to permit of'a more thorough and efiicient agitationof the cleansing liqid in the pipe, to provide a better finger grip Whilst being so agitated or shaken, to 7 enable a better fit of the plug into thebowl, and to provide an air space on top of the liquid.
The stem plug (Z is a member so constructed as to renderit applicable to various configurations of bores. In one' construction it has a main body portion Which may or may not be Wedge-shape as at e terminatingin a flattened tapered tongue which can tightly t in the slit bore of stems formed With The body portion also carries, eitherattached thereto or formed integrally a tapered needle? or pin 7 Which can tightly tit in circular section bores.
01' in a modification, the stem plug. consists oi a flexible or resilient tubular portion h, advantageously of india-rubber or the like which is formed at one end With a Said tubular member may be 1 cylindrical or of any other desiredhollow configuration so that it may slip over the mouthpiece of the stem, and efiectivelyclose same. A rigid or semi-rigid tapered needle or pin f isformed With or attachedto suchfstem memberwhich can tightly fit in. stems havingcircular section bores. pin may be mounted in a socket intheend Wall of the tubular member co-aXial there with. y
Thus, with a stem plug of the foregoing form, the pin may be used toprick out the stem orifice or for temporarily plugging the same in the case of a straight or only slightly The curved stem, and for stems With a slotted member may be reversed and the tubular Portion fitted over same with a, e'iinilarobject invievv.
I claim: i
1. An apparatus for cleaning tobacco pipes and the like including in combination, a bowl plug and a stem plug, the said stern plug having means for closing the end of the stern and also having pin projecting therefrom.
2. An apparatus for cleaning smokingtobacco holders including in combination,.a
orifice. or for, curved'Inouthpieces the plug plug for the tobacco receivingjportion of the-holder, and a stem plug for the mouth piece end of the holder, said stein plug consisting of a body having a socket for receiving the endof the stem and also having a projecting needle extension. I
, 3. An apparatus for cleaning sinokingtobacco holders including in combination, a
plug forthe tobacco receiving portion of the holder, and at stem plug for the mouth nee eee piece end of the holder, said stein plug consisting of a body having means'for closing 10 the'pa'ssage-Way in the stem end a needle Dated this 11th day ofJuly 1921.
