NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
WELVVOOD MURRAY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN TRIMMINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 144,032, dnted October 28, 1873 application filed May 24, 1873.
OASE O.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, WELWOOD MURRAY, of N@W York city, in the counoy and Staube 0f Nk York, have invented a new and Improved Triwxning, 0f Which the follom'ng is a specifieati0n:
M5 invention consists 0f am reverse-side p1aited trimming in Which t11e p1aits are folded in oppnsite directions ab t1 1e margins, and, when dasired, a puft is formed between the plaits 3 the edge. T0 make this trimming I use a pair 0f intermittingly-roaoing rollers, Wit-h pufling cogs 01 teeth, when the trimming is t0 he puffed, eombined wlth a pzu'r of folding b es 0r knives a11d a feeding-guide, in such 2 manner that the km'ves, Working in conjuncision With the rollers, one to euch, and 011e t0 e2wh margin of the strip of goods, f0ldthe 0101311 and push i13 beoween the rollers f0r the folds 130 be pressed down into plaits by them, the said plaits being reversed by reason 0f the blades operating upon the opposite rollers and 0n opposite sides of the 0101311. T11e said maehine is the same as described in my patent dated December 14, 1872.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improVed reverse-plaited trimming. Fig. 2 is a plan of the same when puft'ed in the middle portion. Fig. 3 represents the rollers 0f a machine f0r male ing the trimmings in plan view, and the pl-ait ing blades am]. the guide f0r the goods in cross-seetion.
Similar letters 0f reference indicate eorresponding parts.
A represents the said trimming With the plaits b ab one edge turned 0ne way, and plaits c of the other edge turned reversely t0 them. d represents the puffed middle portion, resulting from the contraeting 0f the w1dth of the strip by a contraetingguide ab the same time that it is fed. into the machine for the making of the reverse plait-s.
In Fig. 3, B represents the rollers, D the puffing-cogs, E the cloth-guide, and. F th'e blades, 0f the machine for making this kind 0f trimming. The c10th is fed downward along ohe guides against one roller ab one margin, zmd the other roller at the other margin. The blades are arranged 011 opposite sides of the clot-h, and hzwe a motion tovvard and from the rollers. They 1mwe tovvard tl1em when they are at rest, and f01d the c1oth by their ends, a-11d present the folds between the rollers so that they draw them in, and, by pressing them together, eomplete the plaits, which are reversed 130 each other in consequence 0f the blades being 011 opposit-e sides, as before stat-ed.
This trimming may be made 0f 0ne strip alone, 01 seveml of difierent kinds, combined in any suitable way.
When the strip is 110 be plaited. only, and n0t puffed, the cogs are 110t used, and the strip is 110t contracted as t0 its width ab the ro1lers; but for puffing 113 also I have a guidewhich contraets the strip before the plaits eure made, and gives the requisite fullness benween the margins f0r the pufl's, .and employ the cogs at the san1e time t0 arrange ehe 'fullness into the puffs.
Having thus described my invention, I c1aim as new and desire t0 secure by Letters Pa ent As a new article of manufztcture, the trimming herein deseribed, consisting essentially 0f the reverse-side plaits, either With 01' with= oun the pufl's, substantially a-s described.
WELWOOD MURRAY.
