FISHL'NG REEL.
Application le May Mi,
To allwwm it m04/ concer/ff Be `1t known .that LCiinnLns TLUfrsorr, acitizen oi" the United States, residing` in the city of Newark, county ot Essen, and
State ot New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fishing Reels,`
means for disconnecting the headand back# plates from the reel frame, and for replac- 'ing1 and locking them m position.
. Another object is to `provide an improved form of frame so `constructed as to be prac tically integral, and unusually rigid.
l ln the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Fig.` l is a back plan` `view oi' my imH proved head plate, yshowingthe locking ring,i ttor locking the plate to the frame Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the head plate, with the adjacent portion of the trame shown in section.
Figi?) is a plan of the plate showing therloclring ring' for locking the plate tothe frame; an improved form of click is also shown.`
. Fig; l is a side elevation of the back plate withthe, adjacent portion of the Ytraine shown in section. 1
Figs. 5 and o are respectively side and lront views of ja modied torinof locking device for lockingthe head and-back plate to the `frame.
The frameot the reel is made` up oi' the heady ring l, the back ring 2, the spacing posts ,3 and the `footliilate et. `'.lfherings l vand 2 are alike in all respects; they are oi' L-shape inlcross-sectionas shown, vand are madeas lightas possibleconsistent with the requisite strength. The spacing posts, three in number, are made olf metal rods, having the reduced ends as at 5 and 6, which are inserted inepertures in the rings l, 2, where they are rigidly secured by blazing, soldering or welding. The ends 5, 6 of the posts 'extend somewhat beyond the outer edge of therings l, 2, so as tofbe flush with the face; of the head plate 7 and back plate S. These plates are made otvulcanized rubber,
bre, or any material suitable it'or thel pui-5` Ainside of the back" isf/si. `serial no. lease?.
pose. `They are each provided` with aperf tures to receive the projectingends 5, 6 Q the posts The `plates areprovided with the shoulders 9, and 1 0 respectively, which set against the respective outer edges of the rings l and 2. rlheapertures in the ,plates are all provided with themetal eyelets l1, which `are spunover the platesboth outside and inside. rllhe material ofthe platesnis cut awayas l2, around each ottheeyelets, so as to provide space tor the keepers 13,- whioh are rigidly vsecured to the projecting ends and 6, so that when assembled the inner races of the keepers will be flush with `the respective inner-faces of the plates 7 and Se .r-ls aineans for lockingthe plates to the rings, lprovide the half rings le; and l5 upon the respective plates, securing them coneentrically in sliding.;l engagement there# with by -the series oit headed studs 16, which are inserted at intervalsalong the rings into the plates, `as shown. The halt rings lll andl l5 are of a diameter to engagethe post ends 5 and 6 and when' in theposition shown in Fig i, they serve to engage beneath 'the keepers 13 to loclr the plates to the rings respectively.' Notches l? "are provided in the `outer edges oit' the hall rings, so that whenthey` are shifted to the position shown in Fig. l, these notches will register with the keepers,`so that the Vplates will be released :trom` the rings.w Stop pins 18 are insertedin the plates, to limit'the movement ot `the half rings to theirvloclring and unlocking` positions.
The head plate 7 carries the usualcenter bearing 19 for. the spool pivot (not shown), and the gear 20, which `latter is rotatedby the crank 20 `mounted uponthe `gear sha-it outside the plate.f The gear 2O is supported by the bridge 2l, pivoted at 2201i the head plate.; the'bridge has several raclr teeth 23 at its free endr which mesh with the piniony `24, the klatter `mounted upon ashort shaft 25vwith a small crank 2G upon the outer end outside the plate. The turning of the crank through a short arc will obviously cause the bridge to shilft and with itthengear 20 into and out of *mesh with the pinion on the spool. rlhe headed pin 27.` is @inserted into the plate through the slot 28 in the bridge, and serves to `contine the bridge in place and limit its movement. ln this manner the reel becomes what is known' as a free spool. reel.`
ln additiontothe locking device as above npoint ot the click into and out of engagement with the click wheel 32 on the end or' the spool spindle.v All of the click structurel is ywell known in the art, with the exception that in the present instance, the click is provided rwith spare` points 81'-, so that when one ypoint becomes too worn to be effective, the spring 29 may be spread so as to free the point in use, the click given a part of a turn to bring another point into use, rwith the spring bearing upon it as shown. i
In some cases, ll maysubstitute ,tor the head `plate locking device above described, the 'form shown in Figs. 5 and 6. rthis consists oit'a U-shaped clamp 33, having an elongated shank 34 pivoted to vone of the posts 3, so as to embrace both the ring l or 2, shown. When the clamp is thrown bach, the plate is freed 'from the ring. Registeringindentations in the clamp, ring, and plate serve to hold the clamp in locking position against accidental displacement. Such a construction as just described is desirable upon what is known as bait casting reels, which are used in bait casting contests, when the quick separation ot the parts of the reel is desirable for purposes of inspection or repair. When either of the plates isseparated from the rame, the spool'may be readily taken out.
lf desired, an arc-shaped plate may be fastened to the head plate as at 35, so `that the small cranlr 26 may bear upon itwith the point 36 snapping into the indentations 37 in the plate 35, to hold the crank against accidental displacement. i
As a convenient means for shifting the locking halt' ring concentrically about the head plate, provide the plate with an arcshaped slot 39, through which a pin'38 projects from the half ring 15, and on the end of said pin the button el is secured ywith the arc-shaped cover plate overv the slot 39. The shitting of the button from one end 'of the slot to the other will correspondingly shift the ring l5 into and out ot' engagement with the keepers 13, and so lock andunlock the head and back plates.
I claim: 1' j f l. In alishing reel, the combination of a flanged head ring, `a head plate fitted thereto, frame posts projecting from saidl'iead` ring,-said head plate having marginal apertures for the reception of said posts,.keepers upon said posts, a locking ring slidably mounted upon saidV head plate for engage- -ment with said keepers to lock said plate and upon said head plate and a hand operated pinion mounted upon said head plate for engagement with rack teeth upon said bridge Jfor shifting said driving gear into and out of driving engagement with said spool.
ln a fishing reei, the combination of a pair of flanged headrings, aplurality Vof spacing postsiigidly and permanently c0n necting said rings togetherto form a reel traine, head and baclr plates fitted into said frames, said plates each provided with apertures into which the projecting ends of said posts are inserted, locking rings rotatively mounted upon the inner faces of said Aplates respectively to slide into and out of engagement with said posts to lock said plates to said rings, a spool mounted to rotate in said bearings in the respective centers of said head and back plates, said spool having a pinion upon the spindle thereof, a bridge pivotally mounted at one of itsends upon the inner tace of said head-plate, a "driving gear Wheel carried by said bridge for engagement with `said pinion, raclr teeth upon the other end of said bridge and a hand operated pinion ymounted upon the inner base of said head plate for engagement with saidrack teeth to swing said bridge with its driving gear wheel into and out oit' engagement with saidspool pinion.;
3. in. a fishing reel, thecombination of a' reel trame comprising a head ring and-a back ring, spacing posts rigidly connecting said head andbaclr rings,\head and back plates respectively iitted `to and inlocking engagement with said head and back rings, a spool mounted to rotate in' bearings in the respective'centers of said head and back plates, said spool having a pinion upon the spindle thereof, a bridge pivotally mounted upon the inner tace of said head plate, a driving gear wheel vmounted upon said bridge for engagement with said pinion, rack teeth upon said bridge, a pinionniounted upon said head platetor engagementwith lsaid raclr'teeth,a crank upon the external` tace oi' said head plate and connected'to said pinion for manually operating the same tc lswing said bridge'with its driving wheel intoy and out of operative engagement withsaid spool pinion. j' l Y 4. In a fishing reel, the combination loi-a reel frame, head and back platesiin locking engagement respectively-with the head and back rings of said frame, a spool mounted to rotate in bearings in the respective centers i ,C or said head and baclrplates and having a 'llO by seid bridge for engagement with said pinion, melf; teeth upon the othei end of said bridge, and :i hand operated pinion mounted upon said head plate for engagement Wit-h said rack teeth to swing Said bridge with its driving gen1' Wheel into and ouil of engagement with said spool` pinion.
