ALEXANDER SAXE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
roornnnusrr.
Application filed February 25, 1921 Serial No. 447,868.
To all whom it may c0noe7m:
e it known that I citizen of the United certain new and usefu Toothbrushes This invention relates ALEXANDER SAXE, a States, and resident of the borough of Manhattan, 5 York, State of New York,
county of New have invented l Improvements in.
to improvements in toothbrushes and has for its principal object to provide a toothbrush having a swivel head which is arrangedin such a manner as to automatically lock in such position as to permit the handle to extend from said brush head in a plane with the longitudinal axis thereof or at right angles thereto.
Therefore as another object this invention contemplates the provision of a brush wherein it is 'possible to changethe position of the head to permit the v the brush with ease.
With these and other invention consists of a ertical movement of objects in view the novel construction,
combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in the following specification, claimed and illustrated in the aceompanying drawings in which ig. 1 is a plan View trating the handle lying head.
Fig. 2 is a view similar to the handle turned at right head.
Fig. 3 is a fragmenta brush showing portions thereof in section, to.
of the brush illusin a plane with the Fig. 1 showing angles to the ry side .view of the more clearly-illustratet-he details of the construction, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the brush head showing the handle removed.
Referring to the drawings in detail the numeral 5 designates in its enti'retyi the brush head comprising a base 6 into which the bristles 7 are secured by vulcanizing or any other suitable ,manner.
This base 6 is provided at its center with an upwardly extending pin.8 which projects in a direction opposite the bristles and embedded inthe upper side ofthe' base is a ring formed with sockets 9 which are" arranged as shown in Fig. 4 to hold the handle-in its various adjusted positions. The handle previously nated by the numeral 10 referred to is desigand is provided ad'- 1 having a jacent one end with a recess 1 for the recentral bore 12 arranged therein 'ception of the pin 8. Embedded in the under side of the handle and projecting from the surface thereof for a short distance are pins 13 which areadapted to enter the sockets 9 to lock the handle against accidental rotation. Seated in the recess 11 is a volute spring 14.- the upper. and smaller end of so that it rests upon the spring. The pin is then slightly headed to retain the washer in. 7 place and it will be obvious that upon forcibly turning the brush head relative to the handle, the pins 13v will enter the sockets and lock the head against accidental move ment. It will thus be seen that the brush I may be used inthe ordinary manner. The
head may be turned toextend transversely of the handle to facilitate the brushing of, the teeth vertically.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described a preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be'understood that certain minor changes in the details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the-'in- 8 5 vention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. A toothbrush having a head and ban-- dle, said handle being provided with a per foration extending therethrough and terminating in an enlarged recess, 'a pivot pin having one end secured in said head and extending through the perforation of said handle and into said recess, a disc upon said pivot pin, a volute spring between said disc and said handle to urge said handle toward said head, and means between said hea handle and controlled by said spring for dand arresting the relative movement of said head and handle at predetermined points. 2. A toothbrush having a head and hanrecess entering from the outer surface thereof and a perforation communicating with said recess and extending through said handle, a pivot pin extending from said handle into said enlarged recess a disk secured upon said pin, a resilient member between saiddisk and said handle to retain said handle closely adjacent said head and a plurality of pins in said handle adapted to engage in the recesses in said annular ring. 10
.Signed at New York in the city, county and State of New Ycrk this 29th day of January, 1921. i
, ALEXANDER SAXE.
