Appue'tin mea July 1e,
To all Lo/wm t may concern;
Be it known that l, CARL A. JorrNsoN,. a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of. Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Meat Chopper, of 4which the fol- This invention relates to a meat chopper of the type in which the meatv is cut by rotating knife blades which co-"act With a perforated die plate, the meat being fed toward the kplate by a feed screvvof coarse'pitch- My invention relates particularly to certain 'improvements in details of construction plate, and to improvements in the construetion of the rotatingknife blades, as will be hereinafter described and more particularly' pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of my invention is shown in the drawings in Which-f Fig; 1 is a partial sectional elevation of a meat chopper embodying lmy improvements; F ig. 2 is av separated View of the perfo-v rated die plate and its bearing; Fig. 3 is a front .View of the die plate;
Fig. k4 is a front view of the body portion of the rotating cutter;
Fig. 5 isa detail sectional view taken along the line 5-5 in Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a front view of the; complete cutter, and
Fig. 7 is a sectional view taken along the line 7- -7 in Fig. 6.
Referring to the drawings, 1 have shown yportions of a meat chopper `including a frame or body 10, aperforated dieplate 11, 4a cap 12 for securing the die plate to the Ybody, and a feed screw 13 having a shaft 14' rotatable'in a bearing 15 threaded into an axial opening 16 in the die Plate 11.`
:The threaded opening 16 yis preferably slightly countersunlr at each face as shown in meat choppers Aof this type by Which the 192i. sei-iai no. 485,933.
i inlrf 2 and the bearing 15 is rovided With 50 a shoulder 17 adapted to seat firmly against either face of the die plate 11. The perforations 18 in the die plate are of uniform` diameter throughout their length and both faces of the plate are provided with accu-. 55 rately finished surfaces. The bearing 15 may be inserted yagainst either side of the plate 11 Which isy thus reversible and provides for doublev wear of the plate. l
A cutter 2O`is mounted on the shaft 14 at 60 i the endfof thefeed screw/'18 and is preferably provided With a vsquare hole 2 1 tting a squared portion 22 of the shaft. v
The cutter is of special construction and comprises a body 23 having integral project? 65 y ing arms 24, preferably of recessed and substantially L-shaped cross-section as shown in Fig. 5. These parts 23 and 24 are commonly formed vintegralas asingle casting ordrop forging. y
The cutting blades 25 are ofthesubstan- `tially triangular' cross-section shown in Fig. 7
and are preferably secured in the arms 24 by brazing or by any similar process by Which the .parts are secured to each other byk 7 5 a thin interposed layer of metal 26.
ln the preferred construction a shoulder orprojection 27 is formed on the under side of the blade 25 and engages an edge 28 of the arm 24, thereby accurately .locating the plate. l
With this construction it is possibleto use a very high grade of steel in the cutting edges and the operation ofthe machine is correspondingly improved.
Having thus described the features of my invention, it will be evident that changes andA modifications can be made therein by those skilled in the art Within the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the 90 claims, and I do not yWish to be otherwiselimited tothe details herein disclosed ybut Whatlclaimisz .N 1. In a meatchopper, a knife comprising a body member having laterally-extendingv recessed integral arms substantially lishaped in cross-section and cutting blades substantially triangular in cross-section fitting the rc'- cessed faces of said arms, said blades beingi permanently secured to said arms by :L thin layer of interposed binding metal.
2. In a nient chopper, a, knife comprising :L body member having laterally extending' recessed integral arms substantially L-shaped in cross-section and cutting blades substen tially triangular in ,cross-section itting. the
recessed faces of said arms, seid blades being permanently secured to said arms by a thin layer of .interposed binding` metal,` and said blades each having an overhanginglip engaging an edge ol' is associated erin.
ln testimony whereof l lieve hereunto nliXed my signature.
f CARL A. JOHNSON.
