To alliohjo nt it mag jconceim: I v
' Be it knownthatl, J 01 n ScH'AD-n, aciti zen of the United, States, residing at the 1 city of Holyoke, in the county of Hampden ure 1.
and Stat e of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loose Leaf Metal LedgerBacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description 1 ofthe invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which. it appertains to makeand use the same;
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements. in loose leaf metal. ledger backs, and the primary object thereof is to provide novel andimproved means for latching the two telescopic sections, comprising the back, intoassembled form. a
r A further object of the invention is to provide latching means which is of simple form, capable of economical production, and having a minimum of movingparts subject to derangement. The invention further aims to provide. a simple telescopic 7 sections at the ends thereof and a latching structure disposed centrally between the ends so as to act equally upon each of the ends in holding the sections together.
Further and other objects will vbe later set forth and manifested in the course of'the following description.
In'the drawings: Figure 1, is a top'plan view of the structure in assembled form;
Figure 2, is a side elevation; Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2; I I
Figure 4: is a section on line le-A of Figure 3, and e Figure 5, is a section on line'5 5 of Fig The two back sections 1 and 2 are rigidly secured to hollow cheek pieces 3 and 4;, to
: which latter the side covers (not shown) of the book are hinged inthe usual manner.
The section 2 terminates at each end in a hook-like member 5 which receives the ends of the section 1 in telescopic relation.
From the free edge of the section 1 preferably at the middle part thereof and directly opposite the cheek piece 3 to which said section is secured, extends a hook G that is received in an elongated slot 7 in the 1nner face of the section 1, and oppositegthis slot the cheek piece .4 has a countersunken means for connecting. the
part 8 formed in its outerface, andiin the shownas of ageneral oval. shape with con cave-convex surfaces, shape and surface contour thereof is immaterial, and su'ch POI? tion he formed so as to present/in ap-i pearance a rectangular box-like structure,
and intention is therefore not limited in this respect. i
Through this slot 9 extends thefshank ofa finger piece '10, the inner end ofsuch shank being secured to a latch bar 11 which bears snugly against the bottom of the countersunk part 8 and is confined and guided as to its lengthwise movements within a suitable opening in the inner, face of said cheek piece l.
' This latch is cut away directly opposite i the slot 7 so as to form comparatively long, and short tongues 12 and 1 respectively, and when the. two sections 1 and 2 are assembled the hook 6 will extend throughthe' opening 7 and intoand' beyond the space between the tongues 12and1et, so that when the latch bar 1.1 is operated the tongue 12 will be passed beneath the bill of the hook and thereby securely lock the sections to gether. v
The usual sheet engaging posts 15 are carried by the two sections and cheek pieces and received in apertures provided for them in the respective opposite sections and check pieces.
From the foregoing t Wlll. be apparent that the latch is located centrally between the telescopic ends of the sections, having a holding actionequally uponeach of such ends. The latch is easily slid into and out of latching position, and is the sole element which is movable, the latch being aunitary structure in itself.
If desired, the latch bar 11 may be pro-. vided with slits forming spring fingers 16 disposed opposite to the tongues, which the opening in the cheek piece 42 so as to hold the latch against rattling.
a pair of check I fingers bear against the adjacent edge of 105. l if having secured thereto the ledger back sections constructed at the end edges for telescoping one-within the other, one of said-sections having a central hook extending fromits free edge whllethe other sec-.
tion is providedwith an elongated slot to receive said hook and is formed opposite by means of a finger piece attached to said bar through an elongated slot in the bottom of the oountersunken part, said latchhaving a cut away portion in one side edge whereby a tongue is provided which engages beneath said hook to lock the sections together.
i 2. In a metal ledger back, a pair of telescopic members, one member provided with an elongated slot and a slotted countersunk part opposite said slot, the other member having a hook projecting from the central portion of its free edge, a latch bar capable of sliding movements along the bottom of said countersunk part and operated by a finger piece secured to Said bar through the sc'opic members, a hook carried by one mem her, a keeper carried by the other member and thereby lock for receiving the hook, a countersunk part :3:
associated with the keeper, a slidable latch bar for the hook resiliently engaging the bottom surface of saidcountersunk part, and means for operating the latch bar housed within the concavity of said part.
, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature hereto. I
JOHN SCHADE.
