TIRE-CLOTH APBON FOR FIBER-DRYING MACHINES AND THE LIKE.

and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Wire-Cloth Apron for Fiber-Drying Machines and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a conveyor apron used for conveying fibrous materials and the like and it is particularly adapted for use in connection with drying apparatus where the temperature is high.
The ob 'ects of the invention are to preserve the results secured by my previous Patent No. 1,357,256, Nov. 2, 1920, and the patent to myself and Charles T. Brooks No. 1,411,937, April 4, 1922, and at the same time provide an apron which can be manufactured originally in the condition in which it is to be used and will not require attachment of any separate pieces to it and which at the same time will be proof against all ordinary deteriorations caused by the elevated temperatures at which it is used.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a complete endless apron constructed in accordance with this invention and shown in position on the driving pulleys; and- Fig. 2 is a fragmentary plan of the apron.
This apron, although capable of other uses. is intended to be employed in connection with two drums D over which the apron is placed and by which it is located at its ends. At the ends of each drum there are two pulleys P mounted on and fixedto a shaft S. The diameter of these pulleys is as great as, or greater than, that of the drum; The two shafts S are positively driven, or at least one of them is, to cause the apron resting on the drums and pulley to be given a constant motion in the drier.
This apron consists of woven wire cloth as has been the case heretofore but the particular improvement which I have made consists in the providing at the two edges, preferably, or at any rate longitudinally, throughout the whole length of the drier apron, of astrip or selvage adapted to contact with the pulleys P and receive the power transmitted from them the same way as belts would. This selvage consists in the provision of several parallel warp wires W at each edge, or at any rate in certain longitudi nal regions, formed of wire larger than the wires of which the rest of the apron is made. Also, these warp wires are placed nearer together than the other wires of the apron to form a belt of greater thickness and strength than the rest of the apron to receive power from the pulleys or other driving means.
I preferably also cover each of the driving pulleys with a layer of leather L to give them greater power transmitting properties in connection with the special construc tion of apron.
In this way, I secure a device which can be so located on the pulleys that the pulleys will do the driving instead of the drums. the drums simply serving to support the apron between the pulleys, and in which the heat of the dryer will not affect the apron adversely. Furthermore, the device, as I have found in practice, prevents the creeping from side to side referred to in the above mentioned patents and also corrected by the devices shown in them. This is due to the fact that these margins do not stretch readily.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single form of the invention and shown an apron having only two regions with this particular feature, I am aware of the fact that the invention can be applied to a woven vvire mesh apron having either a smaller or larger number of longitudinal portions constructed in accordance with this invention, without departing from the scope of the invention, as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to all the details of construction herein shown and described. but what I do claim is 1. As an article of manufacture. a conveyor apron for use in driers, consisting of a single piece of open mesh woven wire fabric having longitudinal portions adapted to contact with drivino: pulleys and formed of warp wires of greater diameter than the wires of the body of the apron.
2. As an article of manufacture. an endless apron consisting of woven wire fabric having longitudinal portions for receiving the driving impulse formed With the Warp Wires thereof placed more closely together than theother Warp Wires of the :falorie.
3. As an article of manufacture, a Woven Wire endless apron for use in a drier having its two margins formed of Warp Wires larger than the other Warp Wires and located nearer together to provide a thick, strong, and unstretchable portion for engagement with pule l0 leys for driving it.
