ln the drawings, 1 represents a suitable support which niay be a table, or more conveniently a receptacle provided with doors 2 2 or equivalent construction as indicated in Figure 1. Upon the upper surface of the supportor table arranged my improved device, suitably supported by end pieces and Ll. llear one side or edge is provided a shoe 5 extending ported on a pipe 6, which serves to conduct a heating medium to the shoe in the usual manner. rThis medium may be steam in large machines. or preferably in smaller machines it is suitably constructed to heat the slice by a medium such as gas, electricity or gasoline.

Each end-of the shaft is also mounted in a trame 10 and retained in relative position therein by springs 11 arranged to resiliently press the shaft in a direction toward the shoe. The frames 1() are mounted upon the supports $5 and il so as to be slid-able relative thereto, and means are provided to torce the frames toward the shoe as desired. vrflic various elements are preferably duplicated at the ends with/the exception of the driving means which need be provided at one end only.

A. cooperating pawl 16 isv pivotally supported on the support as at 17 so that as the part 14 is raised, the pawl will engage therewith and hold it in the elevated position. A link 1S is pivotally engaged with the part. 12 and extended downward, and is attached to a treadle 19 which constitutes a lever pivotedbetween its ends, so that upon depressing the outer end ot' the lever 19, the link 1S will be lifted, elevating the part 14. A spring 2i) connected to the part 12 and to some fixed part of the device. as at 21, serves to auton'iatically draw the lever 12-14 back to its normal position when the pawl 16 is released. Any preferred means may be employed to conveniently release the pawl. As shown, a board 22 extending parallel to and preferably about level with the top of the cylinder serves the double purpose of a sup-- port in passing and guiding the fabric upon the cylinder and as a releasing lever. As shown, the board may be pivotally supported to the frame as at 23 with a depending finger 24 extending beneath the -free end of the pawl 16. A slight lift of the lree edge of the board 22 will therefore disconnect the paWl from the ratchets 15, which will permit the lever 12k-14; to fall to its normal position. The spring 25 or other preferred means may be employed to resiliently maintain the paw] in lproper operative position. As an alten.

In a device of the kind described, a pivotally mounted polishing shoe, and means for heating the same, in combination with a rotatable shaft arranged parallel to the Working face of the shoe with its ends extended 'and positioned in guide-ways, a cooperating .cylinder mounted upon the shaft, a tilting lever for each end of the shaft, resilient means arranged between the tilting levers and the ends of the shaft,fa foot lever arranged to operate the tilting levers'to bring the cylinder intol resilient operation with the shoe, and means for ternporaril-y automatically locking the tiltinglevers in such position and independent of said foot lever for manually releasing the same at will. n

In a device Aof the kind described and in combination, a polishing shoe pivotally supported'to be rocked forward and maintained in relative operative position or to be swung backward from such position, means for heating the shoe, a rotatable shaft arranged parallel to the working face of the shoe with its'ends extended and positioned in guide-ways, a cooperating cylinder mounted upon the shaft` a tilting lever for each end of tlie shaft, a box for each end-of the shaft provided with a slot therein in which the vend of the shaft is located, re-
silient means positioned in the box between the shaft and the end of the box, the eX- tended end of the box being secured to the -tilting levers, a foot lever arranged to op-A erate the tilting levers, and latchi'ng means for automatically maintaining the tilting levers in their advanced or operative position, and independent of said foot lever re leasing the same therefrom at will.
4. ln a device of the kind described,
rotatable shaft with its ends positioned in guide-ways, and with a cylinder mounted thereon. a tilting lever for each end of the shaft provided with resilient means between `the lever and the shaft, said vlevers .provided with ratchet teeth 'upon the free end, in combination with a cooperating pawl arranged to engage the ratchet teeth as the tilting lever is moved in one direction. and means for temporarily locking the paw] in inoperative position.
5.
