The object of my invention is to provide a guard which may be quickly adjusted in position and withdrawn, thereby doingaway with the annoyance and inconvenience usually involved in such an operation, and the invention has reference to guard-screens which may be inserted in a window to prevent papers from being blown out of same, and at night as a protection against bur glars and thieves.

In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a view of a window partially cut away showing my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard in position for insertion in the window; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3--3, Fig. 1, showing the guard in process of insertion; Fig. 4: is a like view showing the guard in place; Fig. 5 is a detail of the latch for holding the swinging supplemental stile in position, and Fig 6 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view through the keeper mechanism.

In the drawing the numeral 2 designates a suitable window-frame provided with the customary beads 3.

The guard-frame is preferably formed of metal and consists of the stiles 4i and 5, connected by the upper and lower rails 6 and 7. The wire mesh 8 may be of a size or design suitable to act as a guard and protection against loss of papers, as above, or against burglars or thieves.

A supplemental stile 9 is pivotally mounted by the pins 9 on the upper and lower rails 6 and 7, said stile being likewise preferably formed of metal in the form of an angle-bar, the lower end having the lug 10 through which the pivotal pin 9 passes and the upper end having the spring-arm 11 through which the upper pivotal pin 9? passes.

The spring arm is locked in position by the clip 12 passing over the nose portion 15 of the keeper 1 1 and by the action of the spring arm the clip drops down into the recess 16. In this manner the supplemental stile 9 islocked in position and cannot be acciden-v tally moved, but to swing it it is necessary to lift up the spring-arm 11 until the clip is.

Where the guard is to beemployed against intruders the padlock 17 may be employed which engages an opening 18 in the keeper 14.

By pivotally mounting the supplemental I I As stated above, the guard may be em-- ployed as a protection againstiintruders, or in ofiice buildings may be employed to prevent papers frombeing lost by being blown out of the window. The insertion and withdrawal of the guard is done so quickly and with such little efiort that its use obviates the difliculties ordinarily encountered in the insertion and withdrawal of the guards of ordinary construction.

What I claim is: I

1. In a window-guard, the combination with a f mine, of a supplemental stile, a lug at the lower end of the said stile pivotally connected to the lower rail of said frame, a spring-arm at the upper end of said stile pivotally connected at a point between its ends to the upper rail of said frame, and means for locking the outer swinging end of said arm in positionon said upper rail.

In a window-guard, the combination with frame, of a supplemental stile, a lug "at the lower end thereof pivotally connected to the lower rail of said frame, a springarm connected to the upper end of said stile and pivotally connected to the upper "ail of said frame, a clip on the outer swinging end oi. said arm having an opening therein, and a keeper on said upper rail adapted to enter said opening.

3. In a window-guard, the combination with a frame, of a supplemental stile, :1 lug at the lower end of said stile pivotally connected to the lower rail of said frame, a spring-arm at the upper end of said stile and pivotally connected to the upper rail of said frame, a clip on the outer swinging end of meaaoa said frame, said frame having an opening therein, a keeper having a beveled nose portion, and a recess back of same adapted to be engaged by said clip.

4. In a window-guard, the combination with a vertical frame, of a supplemental U- shaped stile composed of a straight anglebar having arms extending from its ends and pivotally attached'to said frame, one of said arms being extended beyond its pivot and carrying at its outer swinging end a clip adapted to extend parallel to the side of said frame when said supplemental stile is brought into alignment with said frame,

and a keeper having a bevelednoseportion adapted to extend through an opening in said clip and having a recess back of said nose portion adapted to receive said clip.
