To all whomgit may concern.' y n Beit' linownthatl, Louis?. BOLANDER, a citizen of thel United States, residing at Ithe city andl county of l San' Francisco, and State. ofA California,-have invented certain new andruseful Improvements in Flagpoles, of whichthe following is speciication. l .The hereinafter 4described invention relatesto an improved construction of iiagf poles, designed `for use morev partieularly in connection with schooly buildings, playgrounds, parks and buildings generally; the obj ect` of the invention vvbeing. ,the production of.a.,flagpole which permits of `raising and lowering with. a swinging movement, lone wherein the climbing A thereof for purposes of paintingisfeliminatedand, so disposed relative to its Abase supporting4 structure that when swung .into vertical position; Y there ,A is V thearpeafaee 0f: en integral" structure` andthe stub: :of `the pole beingisubstantially?hiddenfrom view..
. To compreh'endth'el invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a part broken perspective view of the pole in raised position, thereof when lowered being illustrated in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a broken detail view of the pole, for the stub of the pole being removed and the stub in vert-ical section on the line 2-2-Fig- 3 of the drawings, for illustrating the preferred manner of applying counter-balance means` thereto. l.
Figure 3 is a broken detail front view of the pole with its stub tted within the housing therefor. l
Figure 4 is a transverse Sectional plan view taken on the line4-4-Fig- 2 of the drawings.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4, taken on the sectional line 5-5-Fig- 2 of the drawings.
In the drawings, the housing for the stub 1 of the pole 2 is composed of the spaced verticallydisposed side plates 3 and the face angle plate 4, which is united to the side plates 3 in any suitable manner to provide a substantially rectangular shaped housing for the reception of the stub 1 of the ypole 2, when the same stands in vertical position.
The face plate 4 in the present case is of a length slightly less than the side plates 3 and between the projecting end portion of ofthe stub 1, said at transverse bore securing nii-tf 10 ffor receiviii'gjthe 'Upper the position one of the side plates'of the housingl .the saidsV sidefthe lploli'eQ-is mounted for swinging inoviennent"y byfinea'iis ffthe i' transversely disposed.. bolt l5' .whichlpassjes i throughv the side. plates and; thesaid., pole; ln-.the 'present` case, the pole' kvi"s".bala'i'ie'ed byineans of removable" weights 6, which ifi shape ,conform t'o theinterior ,'offlthe stub housing and are secured. to theflowerendl of the pple stub 1 by means ofthes'ecuring-.bolt roopening formedli'n each ofthe seeformedifor a distance A bore' being.,intersectsd1 by 9` wit-hin whichj is i" a' .Screw threaded ,erlld' 6ft' 'Cli Securing' n the lowermost we-.iglitfof the *wei tions 6 is. formed` with va eoi'int'eresunl;` socket bolt1`2, which screws onto vide the requisite weight for counter-balancing the projecting end of the pole 2, each desired form of coiintei-,4
be employed for such]v The said `rod passes through -an .tions `6 and within]ai'longitudinalbore8 within the iewer'end cured to supporting means when the pole is n applied tically face 14 of which is formed at an upward inclination. The exposedl bottom face 15 of thelowermost weight section 6 is inclined ina direction oppositeto that of the exposed top of the filling plug 13 iny order to register swung into to buildings,-there is placed aververtical position, the inclined disposed filling plug 13, the upper.
therewith as the flag-pole .is
faces 14 and 15 serving as Wedging means,`
for holding the pole 2 vin said vertical position.
When the ypole 2 stands in raised posi-I tion, the same' is heldl locked .to the housing for thefpole by means ofthe transversely bolts 16.y which pass Y disposed securing through the housing and the stub 1, being held in lplace b the securing nuts 17;
The angle p ate 4 being riveted `to the 96 yin connection with playparks Orvis designed to be se-y inner faces of the side plates 3,. gives rigid-y 'ity to the housing for the `stub l of the pole 2.
Inasmuch as the fulcrum point for the Hag-pole is situated relatively a short distance above the foundation for the pole, the said pole may be easily swung into vertical and horizontal positions.
, By the described constructed and mounted flag-pole, the same may be quickly swung into horizontal or lowered position for painting, cleaning or other purposes and afterwards placed linto vertical position, the cost of erection ofthe pole is `reduced to a minimum, and a strong housing is provided'for the stub of the pole, which, when thev lpole stands in vertical position, presents ai neat andattractive appearance.
f Having thus described the invention what is'claimedvas new and desired to be protected by. Letters Patent is l. The combination with a `Hag-pole adapted forl swinging movement, of a housing shaped tovconform to the stub of the polevand comprising spaced side plates and an angle face plate vkunited thereto, said housing' adapted to be held to the foundation for the pole, a filling block fitted within the lower portion of the housing having an'inclined vupperend, means whereby the poleis fulcrumed between the sidel plates of the housing at a point above the angle face plate thereof, counter balance means for the pole applied to the stub thereof, the lower face of the stub adapted to vregister with the inclined face of the filling block of the housing 'when' the pole is swung into vertical position, and means for locking the stub tothe housing when the pole is so p0- sitioned.
2. The combination with a' flag-pole, of a housing adapted to receive the stub of the pole, comprising spaced side plates and an angle face plate, said housing adapted to be held to the foundation for the pole, a filling block fitted within the bottom portion of the housing provided with an inclined upper exposed face, a series of counter-balancing weights adapted to fit within the housing, means 'for detachably uniting the weight to the stub of the pole, the bottom face of the lowermost weight ofthe series being shaped to registercwith the inclined exposed face of the `filling block, means for fulcruming the pole between the projecting portion of the side plates for lthe housing, and devices for locking the stub of the pole within `thehousing when the pole stands in vertical position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
