My invention relates to grave markers, and has for its principal objects to facilitate the attachment of a marker to a base block, to 7 cover the attaching means for the marker for Q protecting said means, and to conceal the attaching means for enhancing the attractiveness of the marker.

The invention pertains particularly to devices of the character mentioned including stone bases and metal markers comprising pedestals and plates on which inscriptions may be placed, a further object of the invention being to attach a metal pedestal to a stone base in such a manner as to assure permanence, conceal the attaching means, and reduce the number of parts required for erecting a marker.

In accomplishing these and other objects, of the invention, I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form-s of which are illustrated in the accompanyingdrawings, wherein s Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a grave 2 invention. V p

Referring in detail to the drawings:

1 designates a support preferably comprising a blockof stone having a vertical central through opening 2 enlarged at its lower end to form a concentric recess or socket 3 in the bottom face of the blockto receive a bolt 4 for attaching a pedestal 5to the block.

The pedestal 5 includes a base 6 preferably formed of metal and hollow, having upwardly converging side and end walls 7 and 8, block-engaging vertical flanges 9 at the lower edges of the walls, and a web-like top wall'or covering plate 10 provided with a central opening 11 to receive a post-like standard or stem 12 also formed of metal.

A washer 18 is mounted on the lower end 7 of thebolt between the nut and the floor 19 of the recess, to provide a relatively extensive bolt and pedestal to the block. In a device constructed as described the pedestal may be securely attached to the block with relatively little effort, the single bolt effecting the'per'manent connection of the stem with the base and of the stem and base with the block.

The screwthreaded joint of the stem with I the bolt is concealed and protected from malicious disturbance and from weather effects by the walls of the base 6, and the blockof the stem. in the top of the hollow base in spaced relation with the block further reduces hazard of separation of members, since the stem and base tend to move together in relation to the block.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: p

Agravemarker comprising a solid block of substantially a uniform thickness having a flat upper face throughout and provided with a vertical opening enlarged at the lower face of the block to form'a recess, a pedestal including a hollow elongated base and'a stein, said base having integral top, side and end walls and resting upon and rising from'thetop surface of the block and having its top wall disposed in spaced relation to the block and substantially parallel therewith and'provided with a rectangular opening in vertical alignment with said opening in'the block, saidstem having a solid rectangular lower end fitting in the rectangular opening in the top wall of-said hollow base and provided with a shoulder resting upon the upper face or" the top wall of the hollow base to limit the inward'proiection of said rectangular lower end of the stem into the hollow base, thelower end of the stem also having an axial screw threaded opening and a relatively short headed bolt passing through said hollow base and having its inner end screw threaded and terminating at substantially the plane-0f the top of'the hollow base'and engaged in the'axial screw threadedonening in the lower end of'theblock, wherebv I through the instrumentality of a single bolt -totie'said elements together and to conceal saidbolt wholly'within the marker and protect it from the weather said bolt being operable for attaching purposes and removable only through the lowerface of the block when the grave marker is in an inclined or horizontal position.
