T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RoY M. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicage, in the county of Cook .and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use-v ful Improvements in Map Cabinets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,

This invention relates to an improved ca inet for use in carrying maps which are to be removed from the cabinet and unrolled when it is desired to make use of them.v

One object of the invention is to provide an improved type of carrier which may be removably mounted in the cabinet in an improved manner and which will serve to carry a roller of the spring-roller type having the map rolled thereon after the manner in which a window curtain is rolled upon the spring-roller.

Another object ofthe invention is to so construct this carrier that a cross bar forming part of the same may have one end portion placed in engagement with tongues which extend from a strip at one side of the cabinet and the other end of the cross bar then brought into position for engagement by a turnable fastener carried by' the cabinet.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the means for engaging the first end portion of the cross bar of the carrier that thisengaging means. may be formed from a single strip of angle iron preferably formed of resilient material and havingan outstanding flange portion cut to provide tongues which will be bent to fit intoa slot in the end portion of the cross barwith the end portion of the cross bar extending behind the outstanding flange of the device.

Another object of the invention is to provide an improved type of screw-eye for releasably engaging the second end portion "of the cross bar, this screw-eye having its eye portion formed to provide shoulders for extending in overlapping relation to the end of the .cross bar.

Another object of-the inventionis to provide an improved type of bracket for engaging the pintles of a roller, these brackets including arms whichextend upwardly for engagement by a strip in the free end portion of the curtain map "and thus limiting rotation of the roller beyond the amount necessary to wind the curtainlupon' the roller.

Another object of theinventionisto pro vide the cross bar ofthe roller holder with improved means for suspending the roller holder or carrier from nails or other similar devices driven into a wall, the nail-engaging means being in the form of plates carried by the cross bar and pivotally mounted so. that they can be swung from an lnoperative position to an operative position, and means bemg provided to limit swinging movement of the curtaln beyond the operatlve posit on.

The cabinet in which the maps are to be kept will be of aconventional construction a and in thespecific form illustrated is an upright cupboard type of cabinet. Thiscabinet which is indicated by the numeral l is provided with asuitable closure or door movable into and out of a closed position so as to protect the maps when not in use.

This door 2 1n the present illustration is hinged at 3 so that it may be swung open and closed, but as previously explained any suitable type of closure may be provided. The maps will resemble window shades and I will each be provided with a roller 4 having a curtain 5 wound thereon and provided at v its free end with a strip 6 which extends beyond the sides of the'curtain. This curtain will be formed of linen or any other suitable fabric and the map will, of course, be'printed upon paper which will be pastedup'on the fabric of the curtain. The roller will be of the ordinaryspring rollertype used in connection with window shades and will be provided at its ends with pintles 7 and 8 for fitting in sockets iormedin the heads 9 of the brackets which are indicated in general by the numerals 10. These brackets 10 are carried by cross bars 11 and will'be secured near the ends of the cross bars. I these brackets is provided with a base plate 12 through which fasteners such as screws or the like will be passed to secure the bracket upon the cross bar. A neck 4 which terminates in the head 9 extends from the base plate 12 and at one end of the cross bar, the head 9 will be provided with a circular socket 15 for receiving the pivot pin of the roller whereas the bracket at the opposite end of the cross bar will be provided with a socket 16 which is rectangular in shape to receive the spring winding key of the roller. After the roller has been placed in engagement with the bracket, the bracket will be secured upon the cross bar and the roller will be firmly held in place and cannot all out of place. Arms 17 extend upwardly and forwardly from the heads 9 of these brackets and have enlarged end portions 18 so that when the roller rotates to wind the curtain upon itand the ourtainhas been completely wound upon the roller, the extended end portions of the strip 6 will engage these arms 17 and serve to prevent further rotation of the roller. By providing the enlarged end portions 18, the strip 6 cannot slip off of the ends of these arms 17.

These roller carriers are to be insertible and removable from the cabinet and it is desired to provide means to support the carriers in the cabinet and permit of the carriers being securely held in place but easily removed when desired. There has therefore been provided at one'side of the cabinet, a

strip 19 which is formed of angle iron and preferably of resilient material. .This strip 19 has its flange 20 which extends from the end wall of the cabinet cut to provide tongues 21 which are bent to extend horizontally as shown in Fig. 4 so that these tongues may extend between upper and lower fingers 22 at one end of each cross bar 11 and frictionally engage these fingers 22 with the fingers extending behind the outstanding flange 20. The cross bars at this end of the cabinet will thus be relea'sabl'y engaged by the tongues 21 and since they extend behind the flange 20, they cannot slip out of engagement with the tongues when the cross bars are secured at the other side of the" cabinet. At the other side of the cabinet, there has'been provided a vertically disposed strip 23 which carries screw eyes 2 1 for extending between the tip'peiyan-d lower arms 25 of the. cross bars. It should be noted that each of the screw-eyes has its eye portion provided with thickened side portions forming shoulders 26 thus permitting the eye portions of the screw-eyes to have very good contact with the arms of the cross bars.

Vhen a certain map is to be used and it is desired to remove it from the cabinet, it is simply necessary to turn the screw-eye so that the end portion of the cross bar 11 can be swung outwardly. When this is done, the arms at the other end of the cross bar will move outof engagement with the tongues 21 and the map carrier can be removed from the cabinet. Each of these cross bars carries plates 27 which are connected with the rear face of the cross bar for swinging movement by means of pivot fasteners 28. These plates can therefore be swung vertically from an inoperative position such as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 5 to the operative position indicated by full lines in this figure. Each of the plates is provided at one end with an eye 29 for engaging a nail driven into a wall and ad ja'cent its other end is provided with a side slot 30 thus providing, a hook-shaped end portion for engaging an abutment nail 31 driven into the cross bar. l/Vhenthe map is no longer to be used, it is simply necessary to lift it from the nail which is passed through the eye 29 and after swinging the plates back to the dotted line position, re

turn the carrier to the cabinet. 1n returning the carrier to the cabinet, the arms at one end of the crossbar are first brought into engagement with the tongues 21 and the screw-eye which passes between the arms at the other end of the cross bar will then be turned to the operative position so that its shoulders 26 will overlap the arms at this end of the cross bar and securely but releasablv hold the carrier in place. It will thus be seen that with this construction, the rollers cannot become disconnected from the brackets.

A structure of the character described comprising a supporting structure, a roller carrier removable from said supporting structure and including a cross bar having slots in its ends forming upper and lower fingers, means at one side of the supporting structure for fitting between the fingers at one end of the cross bar to support said end, and a screw-eye carried by the supporting structure for passing through the slot at the other end of the crossbar and when turned engaging the fingers to secure the roller carrier against removal.

4. The structure of claim 3 having the screw-eyeprovided with an eye portion having shoulder extensions for engaging the fingers of the cross bar when the screw-eye is turned to a securing position.

In a structure of the character described, a supporting structure, roller carriers removable from said supporting structure and each including a cross bar having its end portions provided with slots for receiving fastener means carried by the supporting structure, and roller-engaging brackets carried by said cross bar each having an abutment arm extending upwardly for limiting rotation of a roller through engagement of the abutment arms by extended ends of a strip at the free end of a curtain wound upon the roller.
