Application filed an as, 1921f Serial No. 488,175:
To all whom it may concern-.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KoHNLn, a
citizen of the United States, and residing at' Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Price Tags (Case B), of which the followingspecification is a .full disclosure.
This invention relates generally to pricetags or tickets for use in price-marking 'mecha'ndise, and'in particular to means for attaching said tagsor tickets to the. goods.
An object of the invention is to provide means for positively fastening the foldertag to the goods in such a manner as to"in sure its continued attachment thereto under. the most adverse conditions of handling.
Another object is the provision of a fold er-ticket, or tag attachable to the goods with-. out mutilation of the same. -'Another object is the provision of a double faced folder-tag or marker, which either entirely surrounds or which overlaps the goods to which it 'is attached, exhibiting a data-displayingsurface at each-side of the goods.
Another object is the provision of the folder-tag or folder-ticket provided with fastening means designedto positively and securely hold th'etag upon the goods by twice traversing the same.
Another object is the provision of foldertags of tickets manufactured in strip or gang lengths, the: tag widths being defined by consecutively and equally spaced slotsor notches extending partially crosswise of the strip, the slots functioning as a means for feeding said strips to printingand cuttlng position in a machine similar to that described in Letters Patent 1 No. 1,327,241, granted me January 6, 1920.
Other objects and certain advantages will appear in the description of the drawings, forming part of this specification, and reference is made to said drawings, in which;
Fig. 1 is a face view of folder-tags in strip form, the separated tags being designed to be wrapped about the goods.
Fig. 2 is a reverse view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a face view of one of the tags 7 applied to the goods as a marker.
Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the detached tag folded for introduction into a tag cutting and printing machine.
Fig.6 is. a face view of a second form-of folder-tags in strip form, the separated tag's being designed to overlap or straddle the edge of the goods. I YFig. 7 isa' separated tag attached as in use. H i Fig.8 is an edge view of Fig. 17.
Fig; 9 is an edge view of folder-tag..
Fig. 10 is 1a face view. of a'modifiedform of folder-tags in strip form, the] separated tag being designed to overlap or straddle the goods as in the second form, positive fase tening means being carried thereby. for attaching the same to the'goodsf .Figsillj areverseview of Fig'. 1'2is an edge edged 'sideof the strip.
.70 view fromth'e open Fig.1?) is a central section. showing the tag attached- .to' the goods- Fig. 14 is adetail perspective view of V the wire fastening clevicedetaolied from. the tag but showing its elements positioned as they would be when attachedthereto.
The numeral ll designates an elongated paper.v sheetfolded upon itself to form a relatively long .andvnarrow double-ply tag strip providingfiaps 2 was of unequal lengths' 5' Notches' or'slots l are provided along the fold edge of the strip'extending inwardly therefrom and part. way across the strip and throughboth plies. One of theflaps', in this instance the longer fone,"'"2,'z. is
gummed at its lower edge and on its in-.
ner face, as at 5, to form attaching means foreachtag of the strip.- The" strip,
inits commercial form, is adapted for introduction into a printing or marking and cutting machine, as shown inFig. 5. T. In use, the tag is passed? aroundthe goods, as
shown in Figs. 3 and 4. and the flap 2 is pasted against the outside of the flap 3.
The tag is of simple construction and in virtue of the feed slots therein, can. be" fed, printed and cut in strip lengths preparatory to use. When applied to the goods, the tag presents a data-receiving surface on each side thereof.
The tags, as an'article of commerce, represent a gang tag plural unfoldable layer strip, provided at the longitudinally folded edge with definitely spacedv parallel transverse notches from the ,edge inward-and through all the layers, dividing'the strip into a plurality oftags and defining the tag width, the notches providing shoulders adapted to cooperate with the feeding de vices of a marking machine.
The tag is adapted to clasp or bind the goods and is secured thereto by an adhesive, as shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, .or metallie fastener as illustrated in Figs. 7, 8, and 10 to 13 inclusive.
A second form of the invention is illus trated in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, and comprises a strip folded similarly to the first form, the flaps 20 and 21 being of the same length, and notches l being provided along the said fold edge as in the said first form. The folder-tag is placed or clasped over the edge of the goods, (see Fig. 8), and a suitable fastening device, such as a pin, is passed through both plies, flaps or layers and through the goods. A marking surface is thus provided at each side of the goods.
A third form of the folder-tag is shown in Figs. 10 to 14 inclusive and constitutes a modification of the second form in which a wire fastening device is provided and permanently fixed to each tag of the stripat the time of manufacture. A strip is folded upon itself, providing tabs or flaps 30 and 31, the flap 31 being of slightly greater length than its companion. Slots 4, common to all forms of my invention, define the tag width, and a fastening device 35 is provided for each tag midway and adjacent one edge thereof, and at the open side of the strip and tags.
, As shown in Fig. 14, a wire is bent upon itself for purposes of reenforcement and for forming a normally projecting portion 37 designed subsequently to twice traverse the goods when the tag is applied thereto. The wire is then bent at a right angle to form a leg 38 lying against the inner surface of the tab 30. The wire then traverses the tab and is again bent, as at 39, the two arms of the wire bein then bent away from one another to form the arms 4K0, the terminals of each arm being passed through the tab and clinched as at 41. A triangular base and anchor is thus formed for securely holding the fastener to the tab 30. The separated tag is attached to the goods in the following manner, (see Fig. 13)
my name, as attested The flaps or tabs 30 and 31- are separated sufliciently to allow the goods to beplaced therebetween and the portion 37 of the fastener is made to traverse the goods and a perforation 42 of the flap 31, as said flap is pressed against the goods. The portion 37 is then bent towards the flap 31 and its point inserted through a second opening 43, and thence again through the goods, to be turned around the edge of the flap 30 and pressed against its outer surface. Positive fastening of the tag to the goods is thus accomplished in an efficient and economical manner.
Having described my invention, I claim: 1. A new article of manufacture comprising a tape folded upon itself into a strip of plural non-secured plies, the fold edge 6X-- tended longitudinally of the tape, said strip at its fold edge having definitely spaced parallel transverse notches, dividing the strip into defined tag widths, the notches providing shoulders adaptedto cooperate with feeding devices of a machine for feeding the strip.
2. A new article of manufacture comprising a tape folded upon itself into a strip of plural non-secured plies. the fold edge extended longitudinally of the tape and the plies of unequal lengthtransversely of the strip, said strip at its fold edge having definitely spaced parallel transverse notches dividing the strip into defined tag widths.
3. A new article of manufacture comprising a tape foldedupon itself into a strip of plural non-secured plies,- the fold edge eX- tended longitudinally of the tape and the plies of unequal length transversely of the strip, said strip at its fold edge havingdefinitely spaced parallel transverse notches dividing the strip into defined tag widths, the longer of said plies having a marginal adhesive coated surface on one side.-
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe by the two subscribing witnesses. v
FREDERICK KOHNLE.
